PDF Editor FAQ

What type of influence could a parent who's a closet narcissistic have on their child?

This is a complex and very serious question that speaks from generations of pain. It is the eternal story of our desire to be loved by our parents and to in turn love our own children. A Narcissistic parent violates every inate human relationship contract created by using the child for their own self indugence. Some children learn that they never want to be like the Narcissistic parent and run emotionally in the opposite direction. Other children see that the Narcissistic parent powerfully manipulates others and he/she decides that is what he/she “wants to be when I grow up". Sometimes a parent uses a child to inappropriately comfort themselves to asuage their own guilt. This can teach a child to use others. A YouTube video of a full episode of SuperNanny UK illustrates how struggling parents can inadvertantly create a Narcissist. There is a poignant moment where Jo the counselor asks the parents, “ why do you let him ABUSE you? Do you see that this is how he will treat his future girlfriends?” The context of the situation of the family is extremely important in the creation of this very abusive Narcissistic child's behavior; please listen very closely as to exactly what is happening. Ask yourself “Why are the parents grieving, how does this confuse the message the child should be recieving?” Notice the younger sibling is truly being neglected, yet this child is very reserved and is undemading. The patents fawn all over the Narcissistic child and the child becomes more and more insatiable in his demands. Ask yourself why is this? Go to YouTube SuperNanny UK S04E01 and be sure to see the full hour and a half version. After you see the incredible manipulations of this 4 year old then imagine him at 30 years of age, nearly 6 feet and 180lbs screaming profanities and smashing things and faces. Healthy adults are the key to teaching appropriate behavior to children. In this one simple case you can see how a self absorbed mother distracted by tragedy can literally destroy her marriage and children;and in the process create a full blown Narcissist.

I’m 14, and my parents want to kick me out of the house if I get bad grades this year. I absolutely suck at studying and have always struggled. What should I do?

Depending on where you live…I would suggest you go into see a school counselor and ask for a psychological educational assessment. I bet you have some learning issues that could be better handled.Your parents should do it rather than kick you out which suggests they themselves are not particularly skilled. You will have to forgive them for not being good at being parents. This should give you access to more supports in school and direct what type of help you need.Study is a skill not an inate thing or a character flaw if you lack it. It is something you learn. There may also be supports for emancipated students that your counsellor can hook you up with. If not give to a local child help line a call and they might know which programs are available locally to help you stay in school. The library, ymca or boys and girls club all have free tutoring in many locations or can help you find some.I am very sorry you are in this position.

Are you married to someone who was abusive that changed and stopped being abusive? If so, how did that happen?

In a couple I worked with, the husband was narcissist and abusive. He improved very significantly by working over an extended period of time (>2 yrs) in individual and group therapy with licensed psychological and Christian counselors. His desire to be a respectable person and to be a non-hypocritical Christian were primary motivators to get help.He also understood his narcissism was a coping mechanism, and thus not inately legitimate. So he was open minded about trying to reduce his narcissism by finding healthier coping skills.
