What does it feel like to be diagnosed with cancer?
I had Stage IA Grade 2 Luminal A invasive ductal carcinoma (i.e., breast cancer). What did my cancer feel like? Can’t tell you, because I had NO symptoms: no pain, fatigue, swelling, not even a palpable lump.How did I find out I had it? I was 64. After over 20 years of routine annual screening mammograms, #21 showed a “focal asymmetry not present in the other breast nor in prior mammograms.” I underwent a “diagnostic spot compression” mammogram: an extreme close-up under pressure to determine what that “asymmetry” was. (The tech called it a “density”). The radiologist read it and had me stay for an ultrasound, which showed a jellybean-size-and-shape black blob that didn’t deform when squished with the probe. It was then I knew it was serious, as a mere cyst would have compressed. The official classification was BIRADS 4B: suspicious for malignancy. Although 80% of BIRADS 4 breast biopsies turn out benign, 4B is more likely than not to be cancer, which mine turned out to be. (4A is “possibly suspicious” and 4C “highly suspicious”).I can tell you what my treatments felt like. Had a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy, which was same-day ambulatory surgery. Felt pretty much healed after a couple of weeks. Radiation was relatively easy: 16 “hypofractionated” (double-strength) sessions to just the tumor cavity, with no pain, itching or broken skin. No chemo—my OncotypeDX score was 16, low-risk for recurrence.I’ve been on anti-estrogen endocrine therapy (an aromatase inhibitor pill, aka an A.I.) for three years, with at least two more to go and possibly 10–15 years total. I’ve experienced joint pain (though not in my knees, due to having had them replaced a couple years before), night sweats (though not hot flashes), transient “trigger” thumb & finger (“stenosing tenosynovitis,” though I had a trigger thumb years earlier), and slowed metabolism resulting in a 20-lb. weight gain over 3 years. My memory is beginning to develop some small “holes” (I forget names of celebrities and sometimes need to resort to a thesaurus), but I do crosswords and acrostics assiduously, as well as being addicted to computer solitaire. I had osteopenia before beginning the AI, but with semiannual Prolia shots and daily calcium/D3/Mg/K2 supplementation, my bones have gotten a bit stronger.I did develop “cording” and Stage 0 (mild, “subclinical”) lymphedema in the arm on my operated side, but it is in remission. I still do wear a compression sleeve & gauntlet for flights of >3 hrs, and am vigilant about avoiding hot tubs, saunas, sunburn and insect bites.I am back on an annual mammogram and surgeon visit schedule. I still see my oncologist twice a year on the same day I get my Prolia shots, though she says it’s fine if I start seeing her only annually.
