The right answer is the truth.I talk about exes on dates. I ask about exes on dates. I do this for four reasons:I value compatiblity. People don't change their relationship skills, habits, priorities, patterns, and desires overnight. The best way to tell how a person behaves in a relationship is to look at their past relationships.I am secure. I value secure partners. The single best way to tell if someone is extremely insecure is to observe how they deal with the subject of former partners.I value intimacy. You can not love someone you do not know. You can not know someone without knowing their past.I value emotional maturity. The ability to be on good terms with an ex correlates better with emotional maturity than any other single factor I have yet discovered.There are a lot of people who say “The past is the past, don't talk about the past, what matters is the present.” Let's think about this for a minute.Imagine you go to a job interview. The interviewer asks about your qualifications and your employment history. You say, “The past is the past, don't talk about the past, what matters is the present.”You're applying to college. The application asks about your high school grades and your extracurriculars. You write, “The past is the past, don't talk about the past, what matters is the present.”You're trying to get a security clearance. The examiner asks if you have a criminal history. You reply, “The past is the past, don't talk about the past, what matters is the present.”This is insane.The purpose of a date is to learn if you are compatible for a romantic relationship. How are you going to know that if you don't know how your date does romantic relationships?? No wonder so many people start dating, fall in love, then find out they're totally incompatible and have messy breakups!The real reason people say, “The past is the past, don't talk about the past, what matters is the present” is that it sounds better than saying “I lack self-esteem and self-confidence. I become frightened and anxious whenever you mention a past lover, because I start doubting whether I am good enough to measure up to your ex, and I start wondering if you would rather be with them than with me. So I prefer to bury my head in the sand and try to pretend your past relationships never happened, rather than learn from your past relationships and use that knowledge to help decide if we are a good match.”

I always thought it was odd when my classmates were dating back in middle school. Middle schoolers are so young, most don’t know how to keep a relationship. It makes me laugh when my classmates went on “dates”, they had their parents dropping them off and chaperoning.It’s better to wait until high school to date, but that’s just my opinion. Middle schoolers should enjoy being kids at least for a little while.
