What if the Nobel Prize in economics were granted since 1901?
What if the Nobel Prize in economics were granted since 1901? Here I made a draft. As you all know, the Nobel Prize in Economics was created in 1969, long after the others. So I have created a counterfactual scenario in which the Nobel Prize in Economics were granted since the creation of the others prizes, that is, since 1901. I was inspired by Paul Samuelson in his Bertil Ohlin’s bibliography, in which he sketched an outline of possible awards until the year of 1930. I was further, and - steered by my passion for History of Economic Thought - I created a complete scenario in which the Prize existed since 1901. So, in the attempt of constructing the most realistic possible scenario, I changed the dates wherein many economists received the Prize, because it’s obvious that names like Samuelson and Hicks would receive it much before the year which they actually did. Some guys, like William S. Jevons , Abraham Wald, Allyn Young and Frank Ramsey, died prematurely, so I couldn’t put them on the list, otherwise they would certainly appear on it.Disclaimer 1: It's very difficult for me to know exactly what was the economic consensus of each period (the “zeitgeist” in the economic profession of each period), but the economic consensus is very relevant to define who wins the prize. For example, Francis Edgeworth is very famous nowadays, but I have no idea of what was his reputation in the early 20th century, so the prize I gave him was biased with the lens of today. The same is applicable to almost everyone on my list.Disclaimer 2: Since I published this topic I’ve changed my mind about some issues and I’ve edited my list to make some marginal changes. LAST UPDATE: 04/04/2021.Read, enjoy, create your own list, give suggestions and excuse me for my grammatical errors.1901: Alfred Marhsall. “For his powerful synthesis of prior theories and his creation of new concepts and tools of economic analysis”.02: Carl Menger. “For having applied marginal analysis into the study of economics and hence having created a new theory of value”.03: Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk. “For his analysis of capital, interest, and the connection between them”.04: Léon Walras. “For the creation of the general equilibrium analysis”.Today he is more important than, say, Menger, but by this time the Neowalrasian Revolution hadn’t happened yet and I think Menger was more important than him, because the Austrian School was more important than the Lausanne School in this period, apparently. That’s why Menger and Böhm-Bawerk received the prize before him.05: Francis Edgeworth. “For having applied mathematical tools into the analysis of the economic phenomena”.06: Gustav von Schmoller. “For his application of historical methods of analysis that have rendered some important discoveries”.07: Friedrich von Wieser. “For having extended marginal analysis to derive some important concepts, such as the opportunity cost”.08: Frank Taussig. “For his important contribution in trade theory”.He was considered the “American Marshall” and was also the director of the Quarterly Journal of Economics.09: Adolph Wagner. “For his thorough study of public finances”.10: Knut Wicksell. “For his study on the influence of interest rate onto other economic variables, such as inflation and investment”.11: John Bates Clark & Philip Wicksteed. “For their contributions for the theory of income distribution in a market society”.12: J. Shield Nicholson. “For his work on the effects of machinery on wages”.13: Vilfredo Pareto. “For the application of the walrasian analysis into new fields of study”.14–18: WWI. No Prize.19: Max Weber. “For his detailed historical study of the origins of the capitalist economy”.20: John Neville Keynes. “For his invaluable contribution to the methodology of economics”.Yes, the Maynard’s father.21: Irving Fisher. “For his monetary theory and theory of interest”.22: Henry Ludwell Moore & Ladislaus von Bortkiewicz. “For their pioneering efforts toward the use of mathematical methods into economic science”.23: Enrico Barone & Maffeo Pantaleoni.Barone: “For having developed the conditions under which a competitive market is efficient within the framework developed by Pareto”.Pantaleoni: “For his minucious study of tax incidence”.24: Herbert Davenport. “For his analysis of the importance of the entrepreneur for the economic activity”.25: Thorsten Veblen. “For his critical analysis of the income distribution of the social classes”.26: Lujo Brentano. “For his rigorous investigation of the trade unions”.27: Thomas Carver & Frank Fetter. “For their theoretical advances applying the subjectivism into economics”.28: Arthur Cecil Pigou. “For his studies concerning welfare economics”.29: Wesley Mitchell. “For his enormous endeavors in developing economic theories from economic data”.He was the founder of NBER.30: Dennis Robertson. “For his insights on monetary theory”.31: Ludwig von Mises. “For his explanation of the nature of economics and his contribution to monetary theory”.He was one of the leading economists of the Austrian School by that time and had become famous after the worldwide known Lionel Robbins paid homage to him in his magnum opus about the nature of economic science and also his pupil, Friedrich Hayek, turned into the LSE's star.32: John Maynard Keynes. “For his minucious analysis of the role of money on economic activity”.33: Werner Sombart. “For his critical vision of capitalism and his thorough study of its rise”.This is one of the most controversial of the list. His award is justified due the fact that by this time the Great Depression was choking the capitalist economies and there were a widespread skepticism about the capacity of economic recovery. The Prize granted to a socialist reflects this skepticism.34: Edwin Seligman. “For his pioneering work on taxation and public finance”.35: Joseph Schumpeter. “For his penetrating analysis of the business cycles”.He achieved global fame with his 1911 book, The Theory of Economic Development.36: Ralph Hawtrey. “For his contribution on monetary theory and trade cycle”.37: Gustav Cassel. “For his contribution for the General Equilibrium Theory”.38: John Commons. “For his penetrating analysis of institutions and its influence on the economy”.39: John Maynard Keynes. “For the development of the theory of effective demand and its consequent tools to combat economic recessions”.Second prize granted to him.40–43: WWII. No Prize.44: Eugen Slutsky. “For his pioneering decomposition of demand functions into substitution and income effects”.It’s worth noting that this discovery (made in a paper written in Italian in 1915 - and he was Russian! lol) was ignored until 1934, when Hicks and Allen made this same discovery independently from him and only after that they discovered his paper.45: Frank Knight. “For his worthy analytical separation between risk and uncertainty”.46: John Hicks. “For his inestimable contributions in many fields of economics, such as general equilibrium and welfare economics”.47: Alvin Hansen. “For his analysis of the American economy utilizing new economic tools provided by Lord Keynes”.48: Lionel Robbins. “For his contribution concerning the object of study and scope of economic science”.49: John Maurice Clark & Richard Khan. “For their discovery of the principle of the multiplier”.This award reflects the beginning of the keynesian domination.50: Eli Heckscher & Bertil Ohlin. “For their contributions for the theory of international trade”.51: Charles Roos & Arthur Bowley. “For their efforts in the application of statistics into economics”.52: Paul Samuelson. “For his reformulation of economic theory and creation of new methods of economic analysis”.He is only 37 years old! But does somebody doubt that he deserves more than anyone the Prize after his 1947 book, Foundations of Economic Analysis?53: John von Neumann & Oskar Morgenstern. “For their analysis of the strategies of agents who compete with each other, giving origin to the field of Game Theory”.54: Joan Robinson, Edward Chamberlin & Piero Sraffa.Robinson and Chamberlin: “For their development of models of markets wherein agents are price-makers, giving more realism to economic theory”.Sraffa: “For his criticism towards the model of perfect competition, thereby urging formulations of new models of market structures”.This prize should be given before 1956, when Robinson began attacking the mainstream economics in a way much more acid than before. She initiated the Cambridge Capital Controversy with her book from 1956, The Accumulation of Capital. Hence, she and Sraffa started to follow a path much more heterodox, which would prevent them from win the prize.55: Simon Kuznets. “For his contributions concerning the measurements of the national income".Here I changed the motive of his award. In reality he won the prize due his contribution for the theory of economic development, but the bulk of his work concerning this subject was developed principally in the years 40-50. Before that, principally in the 30s, he had done a magnificent work measuring countries’ GNP. This work would deserve a Nobel too, so I gave it to him.56: Jacob Viner. “For his contribution on price theory and theory of the firm”.57: Roy Harrod & Evsey Domar. “For their theory of economic growth”.58: Adolf Berle & Gardiner Means. “For their study of corporate governance”.Their book of 1932, The Modern Corporation and Private Property, showing that the modern industries were very concentraded, sparked a series of political reformulations concerning corporations across the world.59: Harold Hotelling. “For having reworked the theory of production into a choice-theoretic framework based on profit-maximization, setting the foundations of the modern neoclassical approach”.60: Ragnar Frisch & Jan Tinbergen. "For having developed and applied dynamic models for the analysis of economic processes".Same motive by which they received the real Prize.61: Michal Kalecki. “For his contribution on the analysis of the short-run macroeconomics and fluctuations on income”.These days were the heyday of keynesianism. They would laureate Kalecki over this time.62: Wassily Leontief. "For the development of the input-output method and for its application to important economic problems".Same motive by which he received the real Prize.63: Jacob Marschak. “For having introduced uncertainty into the framework of the neowalrasian economics”.64: Abba Lerner. “For having sketched the policies that have served as guide to combat economic recessions”.65: Tjalling Koopmans & Leonid Kantorovich. "For their contributions to the theory of optimum allocation of resources".Same motive by which they received the real Prize.66: Maurice Allais. “For his pioneering contributions to the theory of markets and efficient utilization of resources".Same motive by which he received the real Prize.I shifted him 22 years earlier than his actual award, because his major contributions were done as early as the 40s and I think he’d win the prize earlier in this hypothetical scenario.67: Trygve Haavelmo. "For his clarification of the probability theory foundations of econometrics and his analyses of simultaneous economic structures".Same motive by which he received the real Prize.I shifted him 22 years because the same motive.68: Kenneth Arrow, Gerard Debreu & Lionel McKenzie. “For their rigorous reformulation of the theory of general equilibrium".Here I did a modification: I put Arrow and Debreu together, shifting Debreu's award 15 years to past. In addition, I added McKenzie with them.69: Leonard Savage. “For having developed the theory of subjective probability, which have become very important to the economic science”.70: Milton Friedman. "For his achievements in the fields of consumption analysis, monetary history and theory and for his demonstration of the complexity of stabilization policy".Same motive by which he received the real Prize.71: James Meade & Gottfried Haberler.Meade: “For his pathbreaking contribution to the theory of international trade and international capital movements".Haberler: “For his reformulation of the theory of comparative advantages, constructing the path for new advances in the field of international trade”.Meade won the Prize in 77 together with Ohlin. As Ohlin would already receive it, I put Harberler in addition to Meade.72: Herbert Simon. "For his pioneering research into the decision-making process within economic organizations".Same motive by which he received the real Prize.73: Theodore Schultz & Arthur Lewis. "For their pioneering research into economic development research with particular consideration of the problems of developing countries".Same motive by which they received the real Prize.74: Friedrich von Hayek & Gunnar Myrdal. "For their pioneering work in the theory of money and economic fluctuations and for their penetrating analysis of the interdependence of economic, social and institutional phenomena".Same motive by which they received the real Prize. Some words here: Hayek was one of the leading economists in the 30’s. But after the Keynesian ascension, he lost his place among them. Therefore, he wouldn’t receive the prize that age, in his heyday, because his fall occured very quickly — as quickly as his rise. He would win the award, then, only with the neoliberal rise, in the 70’s.75: Lawrence Klein. Same motive by which he received the real Prize.76: James Tobin. Same motive by which he received the real Prize.77: George Stigler. Same motive by which he received the real Prize.78: Richard Stone. Same motive by which he received the real Prize.79: Franco Modigliani. Same motive by which he received the real Prize.80: James Buchanan. Same motive by which he received the real Prize.81: Robert Solow. Same motive by which he received the real Prize.82: Roy Radner, Herbert Scarf & Edmond Malinvaud. “For their applications of general equilibrium into new fields of research”.Radner applied it into information theory and uncertainty, Malinvaud was able to generate a dynamic model of general equilibrium and Scarf applied general equilibrium into fields that I am not even able to mention. Radner is alive yet, so he still can be awarded, but Scarf and Malinvaud already died. Anyway, here in my parallel world they would receive the prize. :)83: Don Patinkin. “For his incomparable advancement in the field of monetary theory”.84: William Baumol “For his breathtaking advances in many field of economics, such as the labor market, theory of demand for money, finances and entrepreneurship”.The fact that Baumol didn’t receive the prize is the proof that there is no such thing as justice in this world. :(85: Jacob Mincer. “For his research concerning education and its integration within the framework of economic theory”.86: Angus Maddison. “For his pioneering work on economic history”.87: Armen Alchian & Harold Demsetz. “For their contributions for the theory of the firm”.88: Dale Jorgenson. “For the development of his theory of investment”.89: Zvi Griliches. “For his pioneering work dealing with technological development as an endogenous factor”.1990 ahead: The same as the real Nobel Prize. That is:90: Harry Markowitz, Merton Miller & William Sharpe. And so on..Sources I used:Wikipedia.History of Economic Thought Website. This is the most complete site I encountered about HET.Library of Economics and Liberty. The Olhin’s bibliography written by Samuelson, where he sketched his list of laureates until 1930. Bertil Ohlin (1899-1979).
