Did Joe Biden serve in the US military?
No.When Mr. Biden came of age in 1960, the draft had not yet reached the heights that it would reach over the next decade of fighting in Vietnam. As such, he was able to enroll in the University of Delaware as an undergraduate student immediately after graduating from High School in 1961.A young Joe Biden as a student at the University of Delaware. Image from udel.edu.His Junior year at Delaware, he received a draft deferment for student status. He received an additional deferment his Senior year. After graduation in 1965, he enrolled in the law program at Syracuse University where he was able to qualify for 3 consecutive student deferments before graduating with his J.D. in 1968.After graduation, he received a physical evaluation for military service and received a 1-Y medical deferment for adolescent asthma that guaranteed he would not be drafted except for in cases of national emergency. This was not particularly unusual at the time, as all college students would have qualified for the temporary student deferments that Biden received. His political opponents have seized on this to label him a draft dodger but this is inaccurate, as a draft dodger, definitionally, is a person who illegally evades the draft, and nothing I've described here even approaches that threshold — and I say this as the son of a Vietnam veteran, nephew of a draftee, and a veteran myself. Finally, as I'm sure someone will note in the comments, this is remarkably similar to the story of President Trump's own history with the draft, along with a host of other prominent politicians (both past and present). Again, this was not at all unusual at the time.Footnotes:Biden got 5 draft deferments during Nam, as did CheneyJoe Biden - Wikipedia
Are astronauts more prone to health problems than other people or are they healthier, or neither?
PRIOR to going into space, I would say that astronauts are definitely NOT prone to health problems when compared to the general population. We are selected —in large part— due to our good health, and physical evaluations by trained professionals are a huge part of the selection/application process. However, having traveled to and lived IN space, it is possible that we may be more prone to certain maladies later in life. Things like cancer, eyesight degradation issues, Parkinson’s Disease, and others, may become prominent occurrences for astronaut health as we spend longer and longer times in space. The high-energy radiation and its impact on the human body are not well-understood, but organizations like NASA are working hard to learn more. Determining appropriate countermeasures, to ensure astronaut health is maintained to the highest extent possible, is a key objective of the US space agency and space agencies around the world. DNA changes due to long-duration space travel are just now being evaluated by experts, with hopes of understanding what can be done for those “strands” that don’t return to normal.I am not a doctor, nor am I a scientist, but I did live in space for 167 days. The older I get (as of this writing, I am a spry and healthy 60 year-old), the more concerned I become about what may lie ahead for me health-wise. But for now… I try to not worry about things I cannot control.Keep lookin’ up!
I can’t do more than 5 or 6 push-ups and also I am not good at running. Will I be selected for NDA?
You can get selected. But if you get selected, you'll have a tough time at NDA.The selection process doesn't actually require much physical strength. And it is not actually evaluated in great detail. The written is all about your intellect and awareness. The SSB evaluation is psychological, your soft skills, confidence, OLQ, mental and verbal, logical abilities etc. The physical evaluation is minimal. The group tasks need a basic level of fitness, which shouldn't be an issue. The real evaluation happens in the fitness test, which requires you to do a series of obstacles in any order. This does require physical strength, involves running, jumping, climbing, crawling etc. With normal fitness levels, one can clear it. Unless you are in a very bad shape, this isn't a cause of concern. So you can get selected to NDA, but surviving NDA can be a tough task, unless you put on efforts and improve your physical fitness standards. Otherwise, NDA will do it. But that may be a bit too harsh for you. In the first 2 terms, you'll be mostly running only everywhere, even within the squadron, say for going from you cabin to bathroom, to brush and shave, to move to the central lobby for fallin, and so on. Untill you pass your drill test, you're but allowed to walk, as you need to march, in a squad, in sync. Else, the consequences will be running around till the break lasts. The academy will train you in an effort to improve your physical strength, during your PT classes. Of you're weak, you'll have extra classes. If you're extra weak, your seniors will also pay special attention to you, in the squadron as well. Sometimes, you might be doing push ups and situps and other exercise for a couple of hours at a stretch, on a holiday, while your other friends might be resting in their cabins, or sitting and eating at the cafeteria. Life might seem like a unfair deal.If you still fail to improve, you'll be relegated, asked to repeat the term. The third time, they'll send you back home. Goodbye NDA and armed forces dreams. So, I'd suggest, since you already know your weakness, why not work on it, while you still have time.Jai Hind.
