Appalled and disgusted that what is an abode of learning has become reduced to this.My head is spinning with the allegations and counter allegations even as I attempt to understand what happened and who the blame should be fixed upon.Suffice to say, my head hangs in shame that in the heart of our very capital, under the collective noses of the police, state and center, such a dastardly act was committed and nobody has been caught.It shakes one's faith in the education system and the protection it accords to those living in its hostels if tens of goons wielding sticks - boys and girls alike (finally the woman has arrived!) are just able to walk into hostels and wreak havoc. The blood chilling screams of inmates is enough to show that the situation has gone completely out of hand & some accountability has to be fixed. Immediately.The JNUSU President has been badly hit by whoever was protesting - one cannot even imagine what she must be going through right now.Who are these people who congregated out of nowhere with sticks to prove what point - considering both sides, ABVP and the Left, the pro-CAA and the anti-CAA are blaming the other - both are showing, flaunting in some cases, casualties on their side to prove the point.What was the point again?The only point that seems to emerge for now is that a lot of these stick wielders are being escorted out by the police when actually they should've been placed under arrest. The website says it was formed 0 days ago! So, wonderful how that theory went. The number when saved (I saved it as Gh), had a DP of Veer Savarkar with Jai Modi-Shah as username. How convenient!Then another conspiracy theory is around the girl with the stick who is being compared with a certain ABVP girl because both are wearing similar checked shirts. I began to see circles while comparing the girls but decided they are likely to be two different people.So don't know who the culprit is but I do know for sure that if this is a Clear call to create unrest in the country, it has to be nipped right now be it at whatever cost.Some heads must roll and important ones at that.If our heads were not busy campaigning and baying for the blood of those who agree, instead of doing their jobs, maybe today would've been a peaceful day.But with BJP, every day is filled with stirring the cauldron. Never let it settle.

Lawyers and safety.Whenever there’s a rule like this, “fear of being sued” and “safety” are usually the culprits.Around here, every school district has a strict policy for teachers that all electronic communication between teachers and students and parents must go through the teacher’s official school email.That’s for the school’s legal protection.If, for example, a student “friends” a teacher on Facebook, then asks the teacher a question about their homework via Facebook messenger, and the teacher responds via Facebook messenger, that teacher could get fired for breaking protocol, because there is no way for the school to monitor that electronic communication between student and teacher.Teachers are told specifically to not accept friend requests from their current students. If a student contacts them via some social media that doesn’t require the receiver to accept them as a follower first (like Quora), it’s prudent for the teacher to email the student, the student’s parents, and the principal, explaining that all electronic communication with the teacher has to go through the teacher’s school-issued email.It may seem like a silly overabundance of caution, but, when it comes to teachers, it’s better to be too cautious than to put yourself in a situation where you can lose your job over something innocent. Not just your job, but your career. “Fired for communicating with student on Facebook” makes you sound creepy and un-hirable, even if the entire communication was “the homework was page 50.”About 25% of my Facebook “friends” are my own alumni. I like it when my alumni follow me on Facebook, because I like to see how successful they are as young adults. I wish more of them would friend me, to be honest. I never friend them first. It seems creepy to do that. Just last week, a boy I taught eight years ago announced his engagement on Facebook. I was happy for him. He manages some sort of small financial business now, is getting married, and is thinking of buying a house. It’s good to see my students succeed like that.

As someone who regularly teaches 14-year-olds, I would say no.While your instinct is kind, students and teachers engaging in personal email conversations can be misunderstood.If you feel it necessary, you could ask in person, standing beside the teacher’s desk in a public setting before or after class while other students are present, coming and going.My first instinct stands, though. As a teacher, I would feel uncomfortable (and disappointed in my teaching that day) if a student commented on my state of mind during class.
