If you believe you lack ability, or opportunties presented are never genuine… if you lack the ability to trust yourself, other people and the system, then no amount of hard work is likely to result in success.Trust is vital because to succeed, you have to ask for things. You have to not be afraid of rejection. You have to believe in the opportunities the world offers. You have to be willing to take risks, and that requires belief in yourself and the support systems available to help you recover if you sometimes fail.Environment is a major factor contributing to success, for two reasons. First, some environments offer more opportunities. People who move in environments filled with people of influence have more opportunities. People who move among people who are confident and willing to teach and guide and encourage others have more opportunities. People who move in environments where capital is easy to access have more opportunities. People born into affluent environments have more opportunities. It’s much harder to succeed when you are struggling to keep a roof over your head and food on your table. Most likely that’s what she was doing around the time she met and married Fred.From stories via her family and long time friends it would seem that Mary Trump was a hands off mother with Donald. She had either become accustomed to having nannies on hand after 3 children or just as likely because of illness. When Donald was just 2, the birth of his younger brother Robert lead to serious health issues for Mary. She had to have several surgeries, one a hysterectomy. Apparently she was doing so poorly she wasn’t expected to live. This might have marked a change in her parenting because she simply was not physically available in the same way as before. But one thing is for sure Donald was not close to his mother, she was a background figure in his life. In all his books and most interviews he talks about her sparingly at best, but not negatively. Many biographers and reporters have noticed over the years that he always has a picture of his father on his desk or in his office. But rarely has one of his mother, in fact he had to be encouraged to add one to the oval office. I do not believe he hated his mother, but I think she was the first victim of his belief (and his father’s) that women are objects, not equals.Psychologists who are analysing the President behaviour have wondered whether his thin skin, need for praise and poor treatment of women – particularly those who stand up to him – stems from his relationship with his mother.Most people remember her in a positive light. Many referred to her as the most polished of all the Trumps. She was an avid volunteer and championed many charities. She was also, always a Scot. She went home yearly for as long as she was able. We know that she was religious. And was disappointed in Donald's first divorce or more likely his very public affair that led to his divorce. She is quoted as saying “What kind of son have I created?”Hard to render a verdict on what kind of person she was from all this. Clearly she wasn’t a monster of any sort. She seems quite devoted to religion, her husband and her causes. Maybe a touch stand-offish with her boys but perhaps that was just the way she was raised. Who knows.
