The cars were running on gasoline (replacing alcohol which isn’t as good as gasoline for power and mileage). Several cars caught on fire during a crash, creating a ghastly scene. It burned some drivers and Indy went back to using alcohol.Obviously, a bullet hole in the gas tank of an airplane causes not only a leak, but a gasoline stream that can catch on fire and explode. Somewhat surprising is the fact that the bullet or cannon shell will almost always keep going through the tank and out the other side. And God help the pilot if the projectile had a phosphorous tail. It will ignite the fumes on its’ way through and the tank will explode.In the European theater of WW 2 , both the Allies and the Germans had self sealing gas tanks on all their airplanes. In the Pacific war, Americans had them but the Japanese fighters did not. The designer at Mitsubishi had a passion for lightness as the key to maneuverability, and maneuverability as the key to dogfighting success. They swept the skies of America’s Wildcat, carrier-based fighters. This was a disaster in the making.Our answer was the US redesigning the Wildcat with a far bigger engine, more armor, better aerobatic ability, and, of course, self sealing fuel tanks. More protection, even if it had to be offset by more horsepower, was, to US engineers, a no-brainer.This self sealing not only survived 50 caliber (0.50 inch diameter ) rounds, they even survived the 20 mm (0.79 inch diameter) cannon rounds. Remember, the bullet or cannon round will make a bigger hole at exiting than entering the gas tank. This is due to two things: partial blunting of the bullet into a larger caliber, and the effect of tumbling after the initial strike. Yet, the self sealing capability still held.Now that I think about it, I can’t remember piloting any light civilian aircraft with self sealing tanks. I can’t remember any machine guns on them either. Maybe that’s the reason it wasn’t included in my walk-around inspection.
