So I suggest you start searching for good research groups and their respective professors-in-charge from various universities/institutes that are supported under DAAD. To build up the quality of your research, I suggest it is always better to go by the esteem and research output of the group you plan to work with. The repute of the university/institute is second to this.Additional pointers:-Work well this summer to build up you research profile so that you not only have a greater chance of getting through the programme, but also because it will greatly improve your chances of getting an acceptance from a professor in that field or a related one.-Younger, up-and-coming professors tend to be more enthusiastic and are more likely to be interested in taking interns and guide you more effectively.-Read up on the topic you plan to intern on. Read fully a few good papers (preferably review articles) on that field, preferably ones written by the professor you're writing to. It does not matter if you do not understand everything on those papers. The gist is what is important. In your first mail to the professor, do not simply ask to be taken in as an intern, but ask doubts and make suggestions about the papers you've read. This should not be difficult if you are genuinely interested in that field. Show your interest in research on the topic and not the 'German intern' brand.- Specify, in the mail, that you will be applying through DAAD and make it clear to the professor that you will not be requiring any funding by him or his department.-Write a solid terse, technical project proposal (once you've got an acceptance and have worked out your research topic with your professor). [I think mine was 1.5 pages long]. Read and get it reviewed by as many people as possible- subject professors, English teachers, seniors, relatives, friends etc. Highlight the potential applications and impact of your proposed field of research.
