What is the most badass looking jet?
Hello there,Awesome question - and , oohh…there are so many to choose from, I’ll give you some of my personal favourites - and forgive me if they are a bit controversial !I’ve rated them a badass not only on looks but also on performance as well as reputation. Form follows function, so this tends to be a fair means of evaluation, at least to me. The amazing looking ones tend to be military, though the occasional civil one sneaks in too….I’ll break them down country by country.Great BritianSince they invented the engine itself, its fitting that some of their early designs were flatout badass-looking, in terms of what were they THINKING ?! But that’s a British Boffin-quirk - genius married to madness at the altar of aeronautics, so here goes …Fairey Delta 1 [ Fairey Delta 1 - Wikipedia]Its one of the cutest and yet most perplexing jet aircraft ever made - admittedly a research rig, but at the same - it looks like they let the 10 year old Bluebottle (from the Goon Show on BBC radio at the time) take a sketch from his school notebook and make a jet fighter ! Its virtually a caricature, and yet at the same time deadly serious….Badass score : 8/10Boulton Paul P.111 aka ‘The Yellow Peril’ [ Boulton Paul P.111 - Wikipedia ]Given this name by it’s test pilots who were real he-men back then, the P.111, also a delta-winged jet, had its flight characteristics described as ‘touchy’ and ‘on edge’. From that, it can be imagined to be the jet-equivalent of a GeeBee R2 inter-war racer, as Brig. Gen. ‘Jimmy’ Doolittle made similar comments about it at the time he flew that earlier aircraft. The phrase ‘bite you in the ass’ applied equally to the P.111 and GeeBee.Not for nothing was it therefore called ‘The Yellow Peril’ and was useful in teaching jet fighter designers on how not to do things in future.Badass score : 9/10Boulton Paul P.120 [ Boulton Paul P.120 - Wikipedia ]Having learned of pilot’s distaste for the P.111, Boulton Paul modified the design to have a small horizontal tailplane to improve handling performance. It did not work ….Pilots on flying it, promptly christened it ‘The Black Widowmaker’ due its paint scheme. So, derived of a badass, it was still a badass !Badass score : 9.5/10English Electric P1 Prototype [English Electric Lightning - Wikipedia ]Most aficionados will be aware of the English Electric Lightning, which is of course up there on the Badass scale - we’ll get to that in a moment. However, I have to give a good Badass score to its prototype, the P1. I mean, look at the thing - its literally a fantasy in aluminium, again looking like they let a 10 year old child design it for them. Which is no bad thing. And, from the proportions of fuselage height etc, it looks as though the P1’s designer really enjoyed reading his ‘Dan Dare’ and ‘Eagle’ comics a lot !And that it went like a scalded cat only confirmed the genius of that inner 10 year old.Badass score : 9/10English Electric Lightning [ English Electric Lightning - Wikipedia ]In finished form, the Lighting remained and out-and-out badass. Ahh, dear Lightning, how do I love thee ! Let me count the ways….[1] Supersonic going vertical.[2] The first ballistic fighter i.e. having more thrust than mass.[3] Missiles which actually worked on both fighters and bombers, the Fireflash.[4] Drinking habit of a Rugby Player. It could empty its tanks in half an hour….or in 5 minutes…[5] Annoyed its ground crew for being a pain to work on.[6] Able to goose SR-71’s entering and leaving English airspace for their landings at Mildenhall AFB, at altitude, and painting them with radar for a Fireflash hit…which the Lightning boys did for a laugh !So, it began life as a badass, was flown by badasses, was badass to maintain, and drank like a badass…Badass score : 10/10 !Handley Page Victor - [ Handley Page Victor - Wikipedia ]Of all the V-bombers, to me the Victor looks like such a badass in form. Turns out, when used in anger for the first and only time during the Falklands War, it was flown in a badass way - I mean , 12 Victors to get a Vulcan to Port Stanley, and then another 12 to get it back again, refueling themselves and it !So flown by serious badasses (Victor drivers were nuts where the Vulcan drivers were ballsy, I maintain), with looks to match.I’ve written more about it here : Martin La Grange's answer to What is the most interesting military jet? What makes it so intriguing?Badass score : 8/10United StatesHaving gotten going in the jet aircraft stakes from the 1950’s onwards, the United States has been willing to go down some serious rabbitholes to the delight of aviation aficionados. As a result, some of these selections I have both affection for as well as acknowledging that they meet the badass criterion of being both nuts and genius at the same time !Republic XF-91 Thunderceptor - [ Republic XF-91 Thunderceptor - Wikipedia ]Area-ruling was still not fully understood, back in 1949. Going supersonic, however, was well understood given how Chuck Yeager was the first guy to go there in the X-1.So, to make a supersonic fighter efficient at the job was going to take some novel solutions - and, in the case of the XF-91 (as well as the next entry) badass ones !Rather than attempt to area rule the fuselage (as was done subsequently, and ruefully with the F-102), Republic decided to area rule the wing, with the wing thickest and long-chord at the tips, and thinnest and narrow-chord at the roots…And , if that wasn’t nuts enough, the undercarriage retracted into the tips - a characteristic shared with that other stupendous badass, the EE Lightning, which when scoring this beast is an advantage. The planform beggars belief, and, had it been made , would perhaps have suffered in the same way the Northrop F-89 Scorpion did from wing twist coupling, which would have (of course) ripped the WINGS OFF !And that’s not all ! No indeedy - 2 of the XF-91 prototypes got some very novel designs applied to them - a BIG radar, and a V-tail….So on these fronts, the XF-91 does well.Badass score : 9.2/10North American F-100 Super Sabre - [ North American F-100 Super Sabre - Wikipedia ]What, the ‘Hun’ a badass ? Well, yes, and the picture above makes clear as to the reason. In a real sense, the F-100 is an evolution of the F-86 configuration into the Mach 2 realm. Its got afterburner, 45 degree swept wing, sophistication from its aerodynamics, and more sophisticated electronics including a simle but effective fire-control computer inherited from the F-86D Sabre Dog. All good things…But, the F-100 gained a badass reputation from being quite deadly in its development, killing test pilots, making its pilots on introduction into service initally wary…which is not a good thing, though its development had genuinely cured this aspect of its design. What remained badass was its design concept ! The F-100 could and did blat through Mach 1 on the level, on burners - but not through any witty aerodynamics, but through sheer, brute POWER !After all - no area ruling….which shows a lot of obstinate character on the part of her designers…odd, that. But makes it a badass !Badass score : 7/10Convair Sea Dart [ Convair F2Y Sea Dart - Wikipedia ]Despite having proved decisively that Naval airpower was in future going to be carrier borne after WWII, this did not stop the US Navy from toying with the idea of flying boat supersonic (!) jet fighter.Using the aerodynamics of the F-102 Delta Dart, Convair then developed the Sea Dart, which was exactly this.It became, and remains, the only supersonic water-borne aircraft ever made.In terms then, of being a badass, this beast fits the bill rather well in my view.Badass score : 8/10Martin Seamaster [ Martin P6M SeaMaster - Wikipedia ]The US Navy, not content only on having the world’s only and fastest water-borne jet fighter, decided that they needed a water-borne nuclear jet bomber too ! And a flying boat to boot….The elegant and frankly badass-looking Martin P6M Seamaster was the result…and, saints be praised, they made six of them !Here seen on their beaching trolleys, you have to admit their purposeful sinister, and yet beautiful and sexy looks make them badass from stem to stern - and that’s the right nautical language for any flying boat !Badass score : 9/10Grumman XF10F Jaguar [ Grumman XF10F Jaguar - Wikipedia ]Here, a badass from being bad in two ways, and surprising reliable on only one of the items of its design that was unconventional ! It sertainly had the badass looks - this tubby thing is supposed to be a fighter ?As you can read from the account (some of which written by yours truly, derived from Air International magazine), the Jaguar got its badass reputation from a combination of sloppy manufacture making systems unreliable, and poor design choices impacting its horizontal tail-surface effectiveness.Only the new-fangled Bell X5-style Variable geometry wing function was without flaw! The abject failure of the program, and the clear superiority of the F-11-F Tiger meant no more than that badass prototype was ever made.Badass score: 7/10France and GermanyThe French had a reputation for making ugly looking aircraft prior to the 2nd World War, and echoes of that surprising lack of aesthetics resurfaced following the end of hostilities in the form aircraft with surprisingly badass looks about them, though these paved the way to the excellence that was to come in export combat types. The Germans, having been taught their salutory lesson, got back to business and by the 1960’s were once again on form in terms of producing a type or two that recalled fondly some of their wartime whimsy, however with a new elegance that certainly showed none of the talent that had produced earlier badass types of the conflict had been completely lost….Nord Griffon and Griffon II [ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nord_1500_Griffon ]Given that their bread-and-butter were turboprop medium-level transports, the design and execution of the Griffon experimental fighters were flat-out badass in the best possible sense. They were all clearly supersonic, and without trying too hard - the Griffon prefigure the F-16 (for configuration), the Mirages (for cockpit, nose section, and wing and tail design, although the Griffon was bigger overall), as well as future canard fighter such as the Rafale and Eurofighter.Equipped with a two-stage turbo-jet / ramjet hybrid, its fair to say the griffon was the ancestor, propulsion wise, for the SR-71 Blackbird. And planned to be just as fast - the projected Super-Griffon was meant to hit Mach 3 in level flight, and feature steel construction - and in this way pre-figured the MiG 25 Foxbat in terms of construction.Even with a de-rated test engine, she was easily supersonic, hitting Mach 1.17 without trying to hard. And apparently was a sweety to fly, as well.Badass score : 8.5/10SNCASO Trident [ SNCASO Trident - Wikipedia ]In terms of badass the Trident is hard to beat, on looks or performance. It gets its name from the number of engines its got - 2 turbojets, and a ROCKET in the tail. Without the rocket it was supersonic anyway, but rocket equipped and it was up there with the fastest hardware in the world at the time - the kind of thing that could goose a EE Lightning with ease. And the French were serious about it being an on-point interceptor too !Never made it, of course, but what a badass !Badass score : 8/10EWR VJ-101 [ EWR VJ 101 - Wikipedia ]Proving again that badass craziness was still within their metier, the Germans produced the EWR VJ-101, without question the worlds first serious supersonic VTOL jet fighter prototype. The four (FOUR !) jet engines could swivel through 90+ degrees, making this a tilt-jet fighter. XYZ control in hover-mode was controlled via fly-by-wire converting pilot control-movements into vernier control, in this way similiar to a modern hobbyist bi-copter radio controlled drone design. For good measure, there is a nose-lift engine too. That’s Five jet engines !However, not only is the VJ-101 badass in concept, and performance, its also badass in design - for, to my eyes at least, EWR appears to have hired Gerry Anderson and his company, Century 21, to design it ! It literally looks like the latest thing from an episode of Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet or UFO.Badass score : 9/10HFB-320 Hansajet [ Hamburger Flugzeugbau HFB 320 Hansa Jet - Wikipedia ]The HFB-320 Hansajet is a business jet, with a badass quirk - that forward swept wing! Not the first mind you - Junkers with their WWII prototype Ju-287 was the first forward-swept wing jet. That Hans Wocke, the designer of that prototype bomber, should have been on the Hansajet design team, goes a long way to explaining this ! The old chap was determined to make good it seems, and he did so well.By adopting this design, the Hansjet benefitted from swept-wing performance, combined with a larger-than-typical cabin (for the time), and conveniently low-level undercarriage as well. That it looked badass as well, did not hurt either.Badass score : 6/10Soviet UnionBecause modern Russian and Ukrainian types are a little less unhinged (and often derivative) - Many of the designs from this period of history were formidable, and even surprising when the truth about them became well known. The MiG-25 Foxbat, for instance, while remarkable, was not really badass when the truth became known about it. Other types, however, manage to make into that hallowed ground….Su-27 Flanker [ Sukhoi Su-27 - Wikipedia ]Without question, the Su-27 Flanker is a seriously badass fighter. It is capable of going toe-to-toe with the F-15 and giving a good account of itself. That it happens to be beautiful to behold and of great graceful appearance is a truly wonderful thing. Its given rise to a series of developments and derivatives, each more capable and impressive than the last - that the Su-34 fighter bomber contains a kitchen and a toilet for the comfort of the crew - on a jet fighter - is seriously badass !Badass score : 8/10MiG-29 Fulcrum [ Mikoyan MiG-29 - Wikipedia ]The MiG-29 was inherently badass from the perspective of being a modern fighter that could - at last - give Western fighters a run for their money in close combat. The MiG-29 was also very badass from another perspective - early versions had jet engines that were consistent in leaving a very visible black, smoky trail as they went along ….When this was pointed out to the PVO-Strany, the Russian reaction on the part of both pilots and General Staff can be translated as ‘Meh…..’Now that is badass !Badass score : 8/10Other badass jet aircraftFrom Australia, we have this ….CAC Warrior Concept. [ Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation: Cold War Flyers – Part II , Air Enthusiast Quarterly ]Here, the Aussies (not short of inherited British Boffin-genius) decided, on looking at the F-104, to ‘Let’s make our blokes a fighter !’As a result, the Warrior looks like a mix of F-104, SNCASO Trident, and (on the cockpit side at least) NAA X-15 for , ya knaow, when you have to get to Mach 3+ when looking for a dive (or is it entering one ?).Whatever else, the Warrior certainly looks badass, and its performance would certainly have been up there. The other Aussie concepts from CAC have certainly have been badass - the CAC Sabre certainly counts (though not hugely) in being over armed, overpowered, and slower than a normal one - a common state of affairs when American designs are mucked over by the British or their colonials - the Spey-engined F-4K springs to mind as simultaneously the highest powered F-4 Phantom variant - and the slowest due to induced drag ! Badass in its way too, but not out-and-out….IAI Lavi [ IAI Lavi - Wikipedia ]Can’t get to own an F-16 ? Well, then roll your own !The IAI Lavi is not the first example of Israel ‘rolling its own’ jet fighter - the IAI Kfir is that…but the Lavi offers a fascinating view into what Israel remains capable of when push gets to shove. A Canarded Delta with full FBW, the Lavi is a quasi 2/3rds scale F-16 fuselage coupled to flight surface design reminiscent of the nascent Eurofighter, which was then the BAe EAP experimental type. Thanks to subscriptions to Air International and Flight magazines, the IAI designer were well able to equip the Lavi with all mod-cons for the time - Quadruple FBW, all moving Canard, weapons loadouts compatible with French and American weapons, a pair of DEFA Cannon, etc. etc. They were getting F-16 performance out of the platform, despite having only a considerably less powerful J-79 as powerplant.Suddenly realising in panic that less-wealthy operators might buy Lavi’s rather than F-16’s, GD’s lobbyists in Washington helped Israel to procure some F-16A’s and F-16C’s, ending the need for the Lavi right then and there. But in terms of being a badass design, the Lavi qualifies without question. And for forcing the US State Department to sell F-16’s to Israel at General Dynamics urging - thus being a tool of statecraft - the Lavi is a definite badass !Badass score : 9/10The Badass Sisters - IAI Kfir [ IAI Kfir - Wikipedia ] & Atlas CheetahIn terms of badass, the Israeli’s have a track record in the form of the Nesher and the Kfir - and the Kfir more than the previous type. Here, immediately after the 6-day war, the IAF was working with Dassault to create the Mirage 5, which was a stripped-down day fighter with avionics removed to make room for more cannon ammo, as the IAF aces preferred cannon over missiles - and do to this day.At the time (1970), France unlaterally imposed sanctions on Israel, to get on the good side of the Arabs, wanting oil (of course) though there were other conisderations too. This also about the time that De Gaulle had France leave NATO.So, the IAF were without a fighter - and having won the Quarter-finals in 1967, the coming semi-finals were 3 years off in 1973, and that was the timeframe that the Mossad was providing to the PM.Air International reported that, in 1972, there had been an arrest in Switzerland for industrial espionage, where Dassault had supplied IAI with the bulk of design drawings for the Mirage 5, combined with the all-important assembly jig designs, in microfilm . This, even then was something like four tonnes of material !The link, through all this, was one man - Marcel Dassault himself. [ Marcel Dassault - Wikipedia ]Being of Jewish descent - and sent to Buchenwald by the Nazi’s - Dassault walked back to France from Germany, doing his poor legs much damage. It is widely believed that the Mirage 5 - in the form of its complete design - was and is his gift to the State of Israel. Its a stirring story to be aware of. This truth is the basis of one novel which fictionalises the story, to an extent - James Follett’s Mirage.Confusingly, the first edition novel cover features the later Mirage F-1. The second edition is not much better, featuring a Mirage 2000 !The Kfir has an equally badass sister - the Atlas Cheetah, about which I know a LOT having been born and grew up in the last days of Apartheid South Africa. Thanks to Sanctions and Arms Embargo to South Africa, the solution to the problem was simple - you make everything YOURSELF !So - during this period - we made our own cars - through grandfathering via Germany and Italy, where all RHD VW, Audi, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Porsche, Alfa Romeo, Fiat and even Ferrari RHD were made in Uitenhage, in the Eastern Cape. If you drive in a RHD country, don’t let the idiot salesperson tell you different - all RHD european cars are from South Africa !We got high tech from Japan, and Computers from Taiwan - and software piracy was not a law on the books ! The most you could possibly be slapped with was a wet bus ticket of copyright infringement…and that’s true even today. We made our own fuel at Sasolburg from Fischer-Tropf coal process. Our food was cheaper because non of it was going overseas in export - this was literally true. We made everything our own way - including Jet Fighters !But it was not better because of the inherent evil on the go - so I am forcibly reminding all readers not to think I would ever even attempt to justify, or find acceptable the repugnant grave error of the past. I literally spit at the memory of thos canniving, wicked, evil men.May they roast in hell for their wickedness - I am ashamed of all of them, ashamed of having come from a country which they took the time and trouble to wreck in terms of human dignity and freedom. But I will say that, despite that most grevious error, that there were some things worth being proud of, despite everything else - and we, the people of the country, did this despite them all. This includes the Cheetah !So, the badass sisters of the Kfir and Cheetah qualify, to me particularly.Without question I HAVE missed some ! Please let me know about them, and in they go to on the list !My 2c worth.
What makes human beings autonomous learners?
Learner autonomyGoing it aloneLearner autonomy is an important concept in educational fields, including language learning ones such as EAP. This section will consider what learner autonomy is, what skills autonomous learners need and why learner autonomy is important. The page also looks at how learner autonomy can be developed, as well as considering the cultural aspects of learner autonomy. The page finishes by considering how the EAutonomyPodcast is loading. Learner autonomy is an important concept in educational fields, including language learning ones such as EAP. This section will consider what learner autonomy is , what skills autonomous learners need and why learner autonomy is important . The page also looks at how learner autonomy can be developed , as well as considering the cultural aspects of learner autonomy . The page finishes by considering how the E AP Foundation.com website can help students to develop autonomy. What is learner autonomy? The term learner autonomy has been used in education since the early 1980s, when it was first used by the educator Henri Holec. Holec defined learner autonomy as the learner's ability to take charge of his/her own learning. Other writers since Holec have modified this definition, in part depending on whether they see learner autonomy as a means to an end, or the end product itself. In taking responsibility for their learning, learners need to work in partnership with the teacher and other students. Learner autonomy is especially important in EAP since students may need to continue to develop their EAP skills without the help of an EAP teacher, for example when they have progressed from foundation or pre-sessional courses to undergraduate degrees. What skills do autonomous learners need? In keeping with the definition above, which sees the autonomous learner as someone with the ability to be fully responsible for their own learning, there are a number of skills which are needed. The main ones which such learners require are: the ability to identify and set learning goals; the ability to plan and execute learning activities; the ability to reflect on and evaluate their learning; an understanding of the purpose of their learning; an understanding of their own learning processes; knowledge of a range of learning strategies and skills; clear motivation to learn. In short, autonomous learners need to be proactive, reflective, self-aware and motivated. Why is learner autonomy important? There are four main advantages to becoming an autonomous learner. First, as noted above, you may not always have the support of your teacher, and you will therefore need to be able to learn by yourself. Second, autonomous learners are likely to be more efficient in their learning, because the learning will be more personal and focused. Third, the skills required in autonomous learning are ones which will be needed in future, for example in the workplace. Finally, since autonomous learners are more proactive in their learning, they will usually succeed even though they may not always feel positive towards their learning or may sometimes lack motivation. Developing learner autonomy Developing learner autonomy involves learning how to learn, and is a gradual and sometimes difficult process. In order to become authttps://www.eapfoundation.com/studyskills/autonomy/#eapfFoundation.com website can help students to develop autonomy. What is learner autonomy? The term learner autonomy has been used in education since the early 1980s, when it was first used by the educator Henri Holec. Finally, since autonomous learners are more proactive in their learning, they will usually succeed even though they may not always feel positive towards their learning or may sometimes lack motivation.Developing learner autonomyDeveloping learner autonomy involves learning how to learn, and is a gradual and sometimes difficult process. In order to become autonomous, learners need to be exposed to a range of useful learning activities, and have the opportunity to evaluate and reflect on these. This will be achieved by a combination of efforts by the teacher, peers and the student. Assessment of learning, by all three groups, will also be important. Working with others in this way can be difficult for some students, who may not be used to viewing learning as a social activity, and the autonomous learner therefore needs to develop social skills such as empathy, tolerance and understanding of difference, as well as the ability to explain, discuss and negotiate with the teacher and other learners. In short, developing learner autonomy means developing a wide range of academic, intellectual, personal and interpersonal skills, requiring engagement with cognitive, metacognitive, affective and social dimensions. The teacher will of course have a role to play in developing learner autonomy. In the first instance, the learning environment needs to provide opportunities for the learner to take control of their learning, which could include opportunities for peer and self assessment or negotiating activities with students. Learners may initially not have an appropriate conceptual stance towards their learning, which means that the teacher will need to introduce and explain the importance of learner autonomy and the skills which are required. Learners may initially lack the ability to identify goals or plan their learning, and the teacher can assist by scaffolding the learning, suggesting suitable goals, or setting or negotiating a timetable. Reflection is also not a natural ability in most students, and reflection training is another area where the teacher can assist and support students. As students develop the necessary skills, the support offered by the teacher can be gradually reduced. It is important not to remove the support too quickly - or completely - as this can be demotivating if students are not ready. To clarify how a teacher can support students, the table below shows what would happen with different types of students in planning for an assignment, such as an essay or presentation task. The term 'semi-autonomous' is very broad, as most students would have some degree of autonomy rather than being halfway between autonomous and non-autonomous.Cultural attitudes towards learner autonomyAn important question to consider is whether learner autonomy is possible in all cultures or whether it is an exclusively Western idea. Although research suggests that learner autonomy is a psychological phenomenon which can go beyond cultural differences, learning behaviour is always culturally conditioned, meaning that students from some cultures, especially teacher-centred ones such as those of Asia, struggle to accept the concept of autonomous learning and therefore find it difficult to learn the necessary skills. One definition of learner autonomy is the recognition of learner's rights within the educational system, which makes the concept not simply an educational one but also a political one. Under this definition, learner autonomy moves the focus from teaching to learning and affords maximum influence to the learners, which runs counter to the importance and perceived influence of the teacher in some cultures. If learner autonomy is used in non-Western cultures it may therefore need to be adapted, and the teacher will need to provide more support, and exercise more patience, with students from such cultures.Following is the link for newly created space for getting all Indian government jobs updates.
