I had a blocked artery. I was informed I needed surgery. In less than an hour I was taken into the OR for an operation where they inserted two stents.The doctor was knowledgeable, kind and after the operation the staff gave him a round of applause for his work. I stayed in the hospital for four days during which I had tests proving my blood circulation to the heart was good. The only complaint I had was the food. It was probably the most boring food I have ever eaten: Absolutely no seasoning, no salt, no pepper. But I was alive.The bill was $25,000 or one million pesos. I contacted Kaiser-Permanente in Portland, my HMO, and they promptly paid the bill. I was very satisfied with this Filipino institution and its staff.When I got back to Portland I spoke with a K-P customer service representative. They said Kaiser was very happy to pay the bill. It the surgery had been done in Portland, It would have cost $80,000.A couple years later I needed medical service in Negros Oriental. The hospital was small, but efficient. And there was no charge for the x-rays and diagnosis. I did have to pay for the medications.On the whole Filipino medical service was quite good. When you stop paying for a grave at a cemetery, what happens to the casket?
My grandmother was buried in 1925 (died in childbirth), and they didn’t know she was in that section until the ‘60s. Once they found out there was an unmarked grave in the section of eight grave sites, they gave the entire group to my Dad and family. After all, it was his Mom. There is “perpetual care” in these plots. We can bury anyone we want in that group of 8, I’m going to be cremated and buried in a hole on top of my grandmother’s grave. The caretaker said he’d loan them a post hole digger. LOL.Basically perpetual care means they will mow around everything as long as the cemetery exists. Its a small cemetery in the middle of nowhere in Iowa.I agree with the others. Nobody pays rent. They can sell the plots, once the amount owed is paid for, it goes into perpetual care like the rest of the cemetery.
Why would the Mayo Clinic want to hold onto a patient who didn't want to be there and apparently didn't need to be there? What's the other side of the story?
