There is mainstream Christianity (who believe in the Holy Trinity) and Nontrinitarianism which isa form of Christianity that rejects the mainstream Christian doctrine of the TrinityBy this definition, I’ll assume the question relates to what mainstream churches believe regarding the Holy Trinity, as opposed to the various fringe groups (sometimes quite vocal) who do not accept that doctrine.The doctrine of the Holy Trinity arises from the experiences outlined in the New Testament, particularly as they relate to the person of Jesus and His Message. Whilst it feels like people should know this, the word doctrine simply means a body of knowledge or set of principals; not more than that. I’m not going to bother explaining the Trinity more than a simple precis. There are other places that elaborate the doctrine more clearly than I could express it.The Holy Trinity becomes apparent from various things said and done by Jesus, but those are peripheral to the question and left as an exercise for the interested to investigate should they wish. This is one list of a set of passages should you be interested.There are various factors that relate to Jesus, His relationship to the Father and the interaction of the Holy Spirit within the New Testament. Perhaps we can bring them out, there is nothing hidden within the scriptures other than perhaps our own willingness to read and understand. I’ll sum it up with my own precis at the end.In the garden of Gethsemane we find Jesus asking “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not what I want but what you want.” Here we find Jesus wanting something different to the Father, yet being willing to do His will anyway. Not so much a difference of agreement, as a different perspective, which is understandable if you think about it.At the point of his death Jesus is quoted as saying “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me.” Again this is not so much a disagreement as a separation. There is a point to the separation, though that point is understandable best from the perspective of faith.Jesus expresses in John’s gospel that “The Father and I are one.” This last statement is a pretty unambiguous regarding the state of agreement between God and Jesus.With the disciples, Jesus discusses the Holy Spirit stating “I have said these things to you while I am still with you. But the Advocate,the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you.” Again, no disagreement here.Whilst I could cite other passages, these are enough for the question. The evidence is that there is a singular purpose between Jesus, the Father and the Holy Spirit; all of whom are persons within the Holy Trinity. However, there is difference of perspective, as evidenced in the garden and at the point of Jesus’ death on the cross.The Holy Trinity is a mystery but, like all Christian mysteries, it is an open one. There is nothing hidden here unless it is something we ourselves bring with us in our assumptions, expectations and desires.The summation of what most mainstream churches believe, including what they believe regarding the Holy Trinity, is best found in the early credal statements, such as the Nicene Creed.Image courtesy Wikipedia
