PDF Editor FAQ

Why did Thomas Cormen write his own book "Algorithms Unlocked"? Is this because his views and thoughts were not really appreciated by the other authors of CLRS?

No, that is not why I wrote Algorithms Unlocked. My editor at MIT Press asked whether I was interested in writing a book on algorithms for a series of small-format trade books. The series is called "Essential Knowledge." I agreed to write such a book, because I thought it would be fun to write a somewhat less formal book on algorithms. After I sent MIT Press the first three draft chapters, the editorial board decided that my material was still too technical for the Essential Knowledge series. By then I had a new editor at MIT Press, Jim DeWolf. Jim encouraged me to continue writing the book I wanted to write as a standalone book, not part of any series. The result is Algorithms Unlocked.Although I enjoyed writing a book on my own, I also missed working with Charles Leiserson, Ron Rivest, and Cliff Stein. I'm looking forward to continuing our collaboration as we prepare the fourth edition of Introduction to Algorithms.I'm always, shall we say, amused, by speculation about why I wrote AU. For example, there's a 1-star review on Amazon of AU surmising "On Amazon, the author, Thomas Cormen has attempted to come to the defense of 'Introduction to Algorithms', all but admitting that it's extremely difficult to read." and "Since his editor obviously dinged him for producing such a generally impossible to read book in 'Introduction to Algorithms' and challenged him to write one that was more accessible, it's a puzzle to the reader why none of his editors called him on stuff like this." I'll just say that this reviewer's mind-reading powers leave much to be desired.

How do co-authors coordinate when writing a book?

When we wrote the first edition of Introduction to Algorithms, all three coauthors were at MIT, with offices only a few feet from each other. Between physical proximity and email, we had no trouble coordinating.By the time we wrote the second edition, I had joined Dartmouth College. Cliff Stein was also at Dartmouth when he joined us for the second edition. Because Dartmouth is only a two-hour drive from MIT, it was easy enough for the four authors to get together when we needed to. Otherwise, we used email and CVS as a repository. When we wrote the third edition, Cliff had left Dartmouth and was at Columbia University in New York City. Columbia is about a five-hour drive from MIT, and so face-to-face meetings became rarer. But we had email, and we used SVN as a repository. The four of us have pretty similar writing styles. For the second and third editions, I made a pass over each chapter to further unify the writing, and then our all-world technical copyeditor, Julie Sussman, took a crack at it. I took about 95% of Julie's suggestions. So by the time we were done, the writing in the chapters was fairly uniform.

In Haydn’s Cello Concerto in D Major, why are the opening lines for the violins different than the solo cello?

In a concerto it is traditional for the orchestra to state the main themes first as a kind of introduction before the soloist starts and plays the themes. It is also quite traditional for the soloist to play an elaborated version of those themes. Why? For variety, and the soloist is the star of the show in a concerto and this is one of the ways in which the solo instrument “shows off”. Of course they show off in other ways too with solo sections and typically a cadenza towards the end of the movement where they really “go to town” with technically difficult music.
