Business mileage reimbursement policies are decided by each company. Another standard question that I think is stupid. Employers ask this because they’ve read that it’s a good test of honesty. But since it’s such a well known question it doesn’t work well.Personally I sometimes grab a pen, a highlighter, or a handful of printer paper from work. I also drive places for work. I just skip asking for mileage reimbursement and call it even. Probably my company comes out ahead on this. I’d rather lose a few dollars than spend time tracking it all, plus lose time driving to the store when I need a pen. It also saves my company time dealing with my mileage reimbursement.If I were interviewing at a small company I’d explain that. If I were interviewing at a big company I probably wouldn’t, they (out of necessity) need to be more structured.

When I worked in public accounting, one of my engagements related to a controller who had committed over $20 million of embezzlement over a ten year period. In addition to a very bad gambling habit, he was also having an affair with a woman in his office who was an unknowing recipient of his stealing.When our forensic audit team went in to try and recover as much as they could of what had been stolen, one of the senior auditors was having to do a horrible commute from Long Island to Jersey City everyday. Given the embezzler had been fired, his new leased company car was sitting in the parking lot. It was a beautiful BMW 535i and the client was stuck with the lease. So, the client agreed to let the auditor drive it so the client would not have to pay his mileage reimbursement every day.The senior was delighted to get the BMW for his commute and noticed there was a lot of paperwork stuffed under the seats. Thinking that some of the paper might be relevant to the investigation, he started sifting through the items. Interspersed with fast food bags were love letters written by the sister of the embezzler’s wife and condom wrappers. So, not only was the guy having an affair in the office, he was also doing his wife’s sister.When our auditors started tracing some of the wire transfers made by the embezzler, they found a $10 thousand payment to a plastic surgeon in California that coincided with the time frame the embezzler had been “on vacation” in California. The initial assumption was that he had paid for breast augmentation for one of the three women in his life but when they subpoenaed the surgeon’s records, they learned it was instead a penis enlargement for the embezzler. Apparently, he did not have enough to go around.At the end of the investigation the auditors were able to recover only $2 million and they weren’t getting that ten thousand back.
