Why are Jamia students protesting against CAA?
So why are the students of Jamia protesting ? Valid question. I will not attempt a political commentary that mainstream media is already immersed into. A more critical question is to explore this - why do students get so much time & energy to protest on matters that do not impact them in any way ?My last article on JNU ( Anurag Singh's answer to What is your opinion on the government's decision on increasing the fees of eminent universities like JNU and DU? ) tried to connect dots on the overall lack of accountability of students to their own careers, a general mis-direction of energy, absence of realism on current economic issues & the low fee structure that creates total absence of urgency to do anything productive for the society.Jamia protests provoked me to explore the same for the university, with almost similar results. Probably worse. Let’s see the facts & you can decide.Basics first. Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has about 18500 students in college level courses. Here is the breakup. Notice the 2003 students under PhD. This is almost 50% of the overall PG course strength. This is disproportionally high for any university. This is supported by a teaching faculty of 729.With a reputation of a premier varsity amongst the minorities, it should attract the best & the brightest I assume. The results however indicate a different story.. 70 % passing rate amongst men & 56 % pass percent for women is shocking. See the pass percentage belowThis for a “premier” varsity is hardly anything to speak of. But thought I may be misreading the data. So tried to uncover more info on how this looks subject wise. As usual, the rot lies in the humanities & social sciences. See below that the pass % of regular students in humanities is less than 50% in some cases. So how are our PhD scholars doing ? Protests aside, the results speak louder than words.Did I get this right ? So with this rate, an average PhD student takes 7.6 years to complete the doctoral research !! With a limited experience I have about education, 7.6 years for a PhD is obscene. More so in a poor country like ours. Are they doing some special research ? Let’s explore. We see a total of 921 publications from the campus in 2017-18. With a faculty count of 729 & 2000 doctoral scholars, this is a 0.33 papers per person for faculty & PhDs combined. How about a national protest for this ?Now the output can’t be looked at without the cost that goes in. Brings us to the Income statement of the varsity. Notice the grants & subsidies by the government here. With a total spends of Rs 599 crore, JMI spends Rs 3.23 lac per student annually. Can we afford such a waste of resources ? On a 56 – 72% pass percentage? This is not all. Here is the data about collaborative research papers published by JMI. I noticed something interesting. Majority of the papers have been published in collaboration with varsities of Saudi Arabia !!I’m not surprised. In the name of “international” students, Jamia varsity majorly has 161 students from Afghanistan, 25 from Iran, 10 from Palestine & rest in low single digits (except Nepal). Does education mean embracing a global outlook or is about just confining to a particular school of thought ?Finally, the protest that is making news. With pass % of ~70% & 2000 PhD scholars taking 7.6 yrs for research, I see that there is ample time to protest on “national issues”. Education & outcomes can wait, so can the enlightenment that comes with the right education. I doubt how many have even read what the CAB Bill contains, let alone understand it.Many claim that students were engaged in a “peaceful” protest & it was outsiders who threw stones or burned buses. Same old story when JNU students claimed innocence about anti-India slogans blaming it on “outsiders”. How come other universities don’t get endowments from such external elements ? Why do students at select campuses allow the university premises to be misused by the “outsiders” ?If this is being fed in the name of education, I protest !!Meanwhile, there is a debate on who started the violence in campus & whether the police acted out of their remit in controlling it. I saw an interesting info in the JMI report. The campus has 217 CCTV cameras across campus, with locations as below. The below table indicates that cameras cover everything that there is to monitor at the varsity. So why the fuss about how & who started the violence.Let’s see if the 217 CCTV cameras can solve the puzzle of who started the violence. Waiting !!Jamia students, can we stop the politics & have the CCTV footage please ? It is your university after all. Own up !Feel free to mail or write to me on twitterHonest - Unbiased - Simplified, as alwaysReference: JMI University website and annual reports.University Reports- Financial Reports
What are the chances to get accepted to Boston University as a transfer after freshman year?
The heart of your question should be, “Why do I want to transfer to Boston U?” because your motive will translate to the actions you take every day to ensure this goal is achieved.Do I want to attend a semi-elite institution? Probably not a convincing reason. The city campus will liberate me from the small town college feel? This explanation is for applicants who are aimlessly searching for a legitimate answer, like mice desperately hunting for cheese in an ocean.Colleges want to see that you’ve acquired some sense of direction by the time you apply. What makes them assume you won’t just transfer to a different institution the following year? Investigate what BU could offer you compared to your current college. Find your purpose and sprint for Commonwealth Avenue (assuming you reside far away from Boston). You’re granted one transfer card, so use it wisely.I successfully transferred to BU as a sophomore, and I implore you to compose your two essays with intention, eloquence, and sincerity. I truly believe this is how I captured the hearts of the admissions office. That is not to say I didn’t maintain a decent grade point average, explore extracurricular clubs, or leave a promising mark on past professors. I endorse all of these things, by the way, but I really believe the swinging factor for acceptance is the uniqueness you could bring to campus. This is depicted through GPA and outside involvement, but the personal statement allows you to persuasively articulate your motive. Do your research, too. Your chances aren’t hindered by pointing to specific Boston University clubs, internship programs, or research opportunities you would utilize to your best advantage. I didn’t attain a 4.0 and I wasn’t the president of any clubs, but I am confident my essays stood out.Be intentional with your course selection and only enroll in classes that would be transferrable to BU. Visit Boston University’s transfer equivalency site for more information on that. Also, I refute the claim of “you must have $70,000 in available cash to pay for each year.” I did not inherit $70k and my family was not able to just whip it out of our pockets, but I still received a generous financial aid award. Please don’t let false testimonies like these deter you from applying.Go Terriers!
Why are so many decent people single nowadays?
I'm of the age which is loosely classified as a “senior" millennial. If I'd been born a few months earlier, I wouldn't have made the cut at all.I'm 35, and I'll answer this question excluding the young (people between 18-30), as there are many reasons why they'd still be single during that stretch in their life cycle. After 35, unless you've lived under a rock or in a bubble, most of us have been through a great deal. Life has taught us many lessons, humbled us in a variety of ways, shown us the drastic errors we've made and many character flaws we possess, if we are at all self aware and paying attention.Relationships have come and gone. A sizable amount of the currently single population, like myself, have been married and divorced, or been in long term relationships that didn't go according to plan. Gone through tremendous heartache, and had other adult relationships, that for a plethora of reasons, just didn't end up working out. These are, in my mind, the most glaring reasons decent people remain single, by choice or not -Focusing on personal growth. Acknowledging and dealing with the specifics of where previous relationships went wrong, reflecting on the parts we played, and making a commitment to change the things in our lives and mental processes that helped contribute to failed relationships in the past. This is essential inner work that must be done before considering moving on and looking for a partner. This can take a significant amount of time. The pool doesn't even include this group.Eliminating online dating. Many have tried, multiple times, to connect with someone of quality on different dating sites and apps. When the fruits of these labors only result in hours wasted and endless frustration, they call it quits. When the cons drastically outweigh the pros, many come to the conclusion life is better and far more satisfying being lived offline, and from then on, rely on eventually making a connection in the real world. This is a catch-22, as the number of good people online are massively reduced by this reality. The pool of potential candidates gets shallower.Being selective. This doesn't mean - having unrealistically high expectations, being irrationally picky or excessively close minded. It only means that an appropriate amount of time is taken to throughly vet, as much as possible anyway, potential options, and eliminate those that obviously wouldn't be a complimentary fit - well before things progress too far, or deeper feelings get involved. Genuine connections are not overnight oats. Proper care takes energy and time. The pool gets shallower, still.Speaking of time. Many people don't have a lot of it. We've all been subjected to the cliches regarding those that “just focus on their careers and don't have “time” for a relationship.” This always bothered me, because it felt like a statement which only applied to a small portion of the “upper class" population. I pictured, in my mind, a very well paid executive working 80+ hours a week, coming back to their penthouse condo every night, eating expensive takeout, then crying over overpriced chardonnay about the loneliness of their existence. These people have more choices than 99.9% of the population. They choose to work those hours. They could choose something different, at anytime. But for the rest of us, we are all very busy, too - surviving. It is more difficult to prioritize having a love life if the majority of your time is spent doing all the things necessary to continue to live in a reasonable fashion. Some would say these are not ideal people to be in relationships with. Guess what? This is the real world. Not everyone has the same luck or luxury. It doesn't mean they aren't decent people who wouldn't be wonderful partners. It's just they aren't able to put themselves out there nearly as much as others might. The pool gets shallower, once again.Exercising extreme caution. Some truly decent people have been so horrifically hurt, they are too cautious, and by default, become their own worst enemy if ever wanting to partner up again. Even those who've managed to do most of the aforementioned growth work and could be a good partner, sometimes end up being single because they are not fully able to put themselves out there - or they subliminally send the message they are difficult to get to know, or unavailable - even if this is not the case. The pool becomes a pond.Having a high IQ - Part 1. Those who have an IQ over 130 (generalizing here, of course, so let's just call them smarty pants or the intellectual elite) can be very socially introverted, and do not present themselves well to potential partners. They may have tried for years, and given up, not tried at all so as not to fail, or just gone about their search in all the wrong ways and likely in all the wrong places. IQ does not always equal EQ! Many of these folks, with a bit of time and experience, would be excellent partners. But they remain single. The pond starts to dry around the edges.Having a high IQ - Part 2. The smarty pants, intellectual elite who have both IQ and EQ tend to (generalizing again, as this is not always the case!) prefer a partner who is their equal, or find one who is as close as possible. There are differing levels of communication that bar the less intelligent from satisfying their desire to be understood, valued, and challenged. Like anyone else in any category, high IQ/EQ's need a partner who can vibe on their wavelengths. Otherwise, frustrations ensue and disconnects form that usually spell the end of any lasting relationship potential. Finding someone of this caliber, who would be a good fit personality wise is inordinately difficult. Add the necessity of having naturally occurring chemistry with that person, the margins are slimmer still. The pond is shrinking rapidly.Incompatibilities. Imagine meeting a fantastic person, getting to know them, developing the beginnings of what look to be a mutually beneficial relationship, only to find out that you are too inherently different to want to hang out together for the rest of your lives. There are of course, things that can be compromised, and having interests and doing activities that do not involve your partner are, in my opinion, necessary and healthy. But when it goes beyond that, it's an exercise in futility, with each of the parties ultimately pulling in different directions. Some would say, “Well, shouldn't just you be honest and upfront from the get go and not waste time?!” Yes. But not everything is transparent immediately and there are things that can only truly come to light as time goes on. Pay to play. Not every hand is a winning one. Both are, at minimum, decent people. Just not a match for each other. The pond is looking more like a puddle.Age. Time marches on, with or without our permission. We meet people, we do our best, we have some fun, we may have relationships, short or long, that end, or we may not encounter anyone with whom a solid connection is ever formed. In any of these scenarios, a multitude of decent people remain single not by choice, but simply because not everything works out and not everyone is meant to stay. The puddle is murky.Concious choice. Some decent people are just….100000% OVER IT. They are great people. Would potentially be a great partner. They simply do not want to be in a relationship with anyone at all, ever again. Perhaps they have been burned one too many times. Perhaps they acknowledge that they like their life as is, and do not want to deal with any of the inevitable changes that occur when introducing someone new into their equation. They are happy being a single who mingles, and enjoy doing whatever they darn well please. More power to them. But that puddle? It's nothing more than a wet, muddy spot where a pond used to be.I'm single. I'm happy to be so for now, due to circumstances that occurred and choices I made. I hope that one day, I will meet someone I can share the rest of my life with. Maybe I'll get lucky. Maybe not.But it's better to acknowledge that life is complicated, people are complex, the above scenarios are all too accurate, and finding anyone that's a truly exceptional fit, at any time in life, is a very challenging undertaking.Without great risks though, there can be no great rewards. And I plan on having a lot of fun and meeting many amazing people during what is left of my journey here.I'm old enough to know life can and does surprise in the most unlikely of ways, so I'll remain optimistic - and will, perhaps, eventually find a man who likes me, as much as I like him.Lily <3, single but hopeful
