Don't even help them. Let them solve their own problems. Tell them what you can help with and let them file that away in their list of possible resources to utilize or not as needed. They will most likely reduce the relative weighting of parental contributions because it's not cool. Earning a dollar by yourself is worth more than $1. Getting a $1 from your parents is mentally worth less than $1.There is also something to be said for having no goals in life- though still being active and accomplish. But perhaps in highlighting a difficult case, it will be easier to deal with your kid.I feel that my personal story will be as illuminating as any profane but pithy response I can type up.I was born in the early 80's in Orange County, CA. My sister was born in the late 70's. My parent's were born in the early 40's. Just to give you context. Father is from Ohio. Mother is from Hanoi, Vietnam.My parents were either amazing or negligent. Either way- things worked out. They left me to my own devices because they loved me, they trusted me, and because I was a pain in the ass when young as fiercely independent as a teen. I gave them no option but to leave me to my own devices. I repeatedly tried to get myself killed and did the wrong thing so, so many times. It's working out ok though. So far, so good.I was a completely disinterested student. I love(d) video games, sports, tv, reading on my own, playing with friends, socializing. I was able to pursue whatever I wanted and give it up or pursue it to mastery (karate, video games, football, basketball).I went to pre-k through 5th grade at a Montessori. I now appreciate that my parents cared enough to send me to the best school they could. At the time- I didn't appreciate it. I played a lot but never did school work. I didn't do any homework until middle school, maybe later.I did a lot of learning though. I would ride my bike a couple miles to the library and read deeply in any subject that interested me. I'd also watch all the tv shows about it. Case in point: aviation and dinosaurs.Dinosaurs: I learned history, archaeology, biology, evolution, cosmology, physics. Watched lots of Science Channel, Discovery Channel, History Channel.Planes: military history, aerodynamics, physics, aviation, metallurgy, weapons and tactics, ethics (just war theory), economics (what it takes to sustain a war effort. I watched every Discovery Wings ever multiple times.I always was in gifted school programs, meaning my IQ was above 130 by some test or whatever.So here, I am pursuing deeply what I'm interested in and ignoring the rest. That's not a bad thing. The world seems to reward a multi-discipline specialist or an "everything expert" over single domain experts or generalists with no depth.I missed the maximum amount of school days each year in high school. I stayed home so that I could finish school projects that were due that day but I had ignored and I needed the extra time. Then I would also play Civilization II after finishing the paper or book report or diorama or whatever stupid shit I had been assigned.However, I did watch every Laker basketball game (home and away) andmany other NBA/NFL games. Thousands of hours. So, so much TV.For me, school was such a waste of time. I went to Los Alamitos High School in Orange County, CA. It was a top public high school in 1994-98 when I attended. It was almost a total waste of time except for sports and a few amazing teachers and friends. I few of my teachers were amazing but 90% of class time, like 3.7 years- was a waste. And then there's the negative socialization of middle class kids doing drugs, driving drunk and/or high, lots teen sex (which I was desperately trying to have but wasn't).I got like a 3.5 GPA (A's, B's, C's, D's) my first two years in High School because I gave Zero Fucks about school.My sister in contrast- 100% attendance, 100% A's. CalTech PhD, MIT post doc.So, within a family- one person can be a perfect fit for school and the other can be a total misfit.Thanksgiving break of Sophomore year I went to a talk given by US Air Force Academy students. I realized that that's what I would do- get into the Air Force Academy, become an F-15E fighter pilot, and go drop 2,000 pound laser guided bombs on people's faces. That became one of my main priorities from there on out. I had a goal. I had a target.My next two years -- I went all out and checked off every box.Academics:GPA last two years was like 4.2 out of 4. Took AP courses and got A's.Attendance: Nope. Still missed maximum allowable days each semester. Fuck that noise. Ain't no one got time for dat.Standardized test scores: SAT's -- 97% Percentile. 1430 score on old scale.Extracurriculars: Varsity Football. Chair of Safe Rides (student organization that gave car rides to students regardless of school, condition of student (drunk, high, poor, scared). I'm sure I did a few other things too. But, I just want to show civic engagement and leadership. Didn't have to go overboard. I still had to go to dances and try to dry hump a girl's leg every once in a while.I drank underage but never did drugs. I chased girls but not excessively so. I drove drunk a couple times. I cheated in class by getting teacher's assistant's to give me credit for homework I didn't do. Never cheated on tests.I was originally going to be waitlisted and have to go to a prep school for a year before getting into USAFA. In May '98 I found out I'd been accepted and in June '98 I was wearing blues and going through 1st BCT. Full scholarship- as with anyone who attends a US service academy. Wouldn't have predicted that 3 years earlier because as a Sophomore in HS, I didn't have a target to hit yet.CollegeGraduated first in my major (Materials Science Chemistry) with a 3.4 GPA over all. I've been told going to a service academy decreases your GPA by 0.5 (as a heuristic) due to zero-grade inflation and massive extracurricular time commitment and heavy/advanced course load. I took graduate level classes as a junior and senior. I have 20-24 course hours basically every semester. I could have minored in math with one more class- but I didn't. On the plus size, my class size was small and I could get extra time with the professor any time (not a TA). My roommate and classmates were sharp and hard work (helps you learn faster). My class sizes were small (less than 20 always, sometimes 5). I went into extra instruction often. I loved learning at this high level. I loved science because I was learning the fundamental "how" and "why" of things. I was able to handle the course load even though my previous academic experience was anemic because it's not that hard to study and learn when you care. High school had absolutely no practical value until it became a vehicle for me to get what I wanted most (to become a fighter pilot). However, USAFA was clearly that vehicle- so from day one I hit it and I didn't let up all 4 years.this:Here is were I was introduce to Stoicism through Adm. Stockdale (Vietnam War POW). Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius. I was already naturally practicing it -- but this has been pivotal.I snowboarded, drank, travelled, chased girls, read, played sports, played videogames. I was a cadet aviation instructor (Cessna 172's- mostly navigation- very little actual flying). Flew gliders, did skydiving, played club soccer, coached little league soccer, fly F15's at Langley AFB, conducted physics research at Hanscomb AFB, completed woodland and water survival school, and learned a lot about leadership.I also survived a double roll over in my brand new 1998 Subaru WRX. Walked away. 5 star crash test rating is a real thing. Thanks Subaru!I taught myself to drive stick in a week just so I could buy that car. For years I kept a picture of that wrecked car with me as a reminder of the cost or poor decisions. I went on to skydive, fly combat missions and ride Yamaha R6 super sport motorcycles though...MBAGot a 680 on my GMAT (90th percentile in 2007) with 3 hours study. I was on my way to Kuwait and wanted to have a test score in case I needed to apply to business school while over seas. My score was "average" for top schools so I saw no need to study and retake it.Attended the Chicago Booth School of Business. Graduated with concentrations in Economics (it is UChicago -- right?), Accounting, Finance (UChicago again), and Entrepreneurship.Two time Dean's List. Co-chair of investment banking club, health care club. Was on admissions committee. Threw myself deeply into everything.I networked, aggressively- and got myself an incredible mentor. I wanted to maximize my return on time and money in b-school- I laid this out here:What is the best way to make the most of going to a top business school?I loaded up on debt to attend this school. Totally worth it because of the school, the teachers, what I learned, who I met, and because I'm the type of person to generate excess return from this. My ROI is high compared to the interest rate on the debt. The debt also doesn't force me to be less risk seeking- so not leaving anything on the table.Law school dropoutI attended Kent Law School (Illinois Institute of Technology) for one semester and dropped out. I was pursuing a JD/MBA.I took the LSAT three times because I wanted to get into UChicago Law but they required a 99 percentile score and don't like MBA's getting JD's because it's obvious you aren't going to aim at the Supreme Court (UChicago- please correct me on this point). Booth would accept current JD student without hesitation because this kids was clearly going to chase money and they'd be impactful in business and a valuable asset in recruiting and as a donor.I never got above a 97 percentile and almost ruined my vision by studying too much. Still love the logic puzzles. Fuck the critical reading at speed. No lawyer rushes -- you BILL BY THE HOUR! LSAT is a dumb test, but you do need some way to separate people and GPA is a terrible metric.This was 2010 and the world economy was burning down. I thought I needed the credentialing. After a semester, I decide a JD/MBA wasn't in the cards.I had a full scholarship -- so no harm, no foul.I then went and flew helicopters for the US Navy (long story about cross commissioning due to a red/green color vision deficiency). Commanded combat search and rescue missions in Southern Iraq in 2006-2007. War is not cool. But doing cool stuff in war is cool.I got myself into M&A investment banking with no previous experience and no internship. Offers at Credit Suisse (Health Care San Fran), UBS (Health Care NYC), and Lincoln Int'l (Generalist Chicago). I chose Lincoln as I was in a medical device startup (it failed) and would be moonlighting (bad idea). I also had a one year old boy and didn't want to get divorced from my lovely wife. I left banking after 9 months and joined a Booth grad to try and grow his tech company (I failed). Now I'm at Amazon. I'm planning more start-ups.
