PDF Editor FAQ
Should I withhold a wedding invitation from a cousin who is toxic, even though they are usually at all family events?
Yes! I withheld invites to my aunts. One cousin in that side was the only one who got an invite. Here is why:My aunts has a “it’s about me” attitude. When I got engaged, they asked who are they staying with for the wedding. They didn’t think to ask, where is the wedding. They knew I don’t live near my family, so why did they assume my wedding was near my family and not where I live? Before the invites got sent out, my aunt needed money but my other aunts were unable to help so they reach out to my dad which caused a lot of issues because my sisters were involved because my sisters had to take care of it. Now, my aunt kept badgering my sister for the money when she wasn’t the aunt who needed it. If you are not in the situation, you should butt out.I felt they were toxic and would expect us to accommodate them when they come down but I was not going to go through that mess so we didn’t invite them. Your wedding isn’t a family reunion. It is a time to celebrate with people you love!On a side note: Someone gave me great suggestion on my subject verb agreement, but then decided that one part of my story needed changing entirely beyond subject verb agreement, so I decided to decline on the whole edit. One day, I’ll come back and edit, or I’ll just delete the post entirely. However, for clarification on where this person was confused is where they tried to say my sister took care of my parents, but they didn’t. My parents are independent, but my sister handles certain things for them because it’s easier.
Which sentence is correct, “the newly term is attached below” or “are attached below”?
Dear M. Anonymous,My head is aching from your two examples (“the newly term is attached below” and “the newly term are attached below”). The truth is, both examples are wrong for the following reasons. Both examples incorrectly used “newly,” which is an adverb, not an adjective; therefore, because it is an adverb, “newly” cannot modify a noun (“term”). The correct modifier should be the adjective “new” not the adverb “newly,” which would change your sentences to “the new term.”Your first example at least uses the singular verb (“is”) with the singular subject (“term”).However, your second example does not demonstrate subject-verb agreement. You cannot use a singular subject (“term”) with a plural verb (“are”). A plural verb would require a plural subject (e.g., “terms are”).Below are two ways to rewrite this sentence using subject-verb agreement and “new” instead of “newly”:SINGULAR: “The new term is attached below.”PLURAL: “The new terms are attached below.”—Sarah M., 3 Nov. 2018 (updated 6 Nov. 2018)QUESTION: Which sentence is correct, “the newly term is attached below” or “are attached below”?
Why does Filipino English sound awkward?
I don't know much about linguistics but if you're asking about the "awkward" syntax of Filipino English my guess is it's probably because English usually follows the subject - verb - object syntax while Filipino grammar (at least the pangkaraniwan, or normal construction) has the verb - subject - object syntax. So a Filipino, when constructing sentences in English, might gloss over the appropriate syntax and blurt out a phrase that sounds awkward to a native English speaker.Lack of agreement (of verbs with their subjects, and lapses in plural forms) is also common among Filipinos talking in English. But I guess it's because in Filipino, there is no such thing as subject-verb agreement because there's only one conjugation of a tense. As an example:I talk = Nagsasalita akoYou talk = Nagsasalita kaShe talks = Nagsasalita siyaThey talk = Nagsasalita silaSo Filipinos are not very mindful of subject-verb agreement, because it's no problem in the native language. If you're studying French or Spanish, you know the struggle I'm talking about. Also, there are no gendered pronouns in Filipino (he = siya, she = siya). So don't be surprised if Filipinos get confused about the very basic use of pronouns.Articles. Filipinos are also not particular about articles (definite or indefinite). So "I want to read book" is a direct translation of "Gusto kong magbasa ng libro."Finally, we only have one catch-all preposition: sa. It can stand for almost everything.about love = (tungkol) sa pag-ibigabove the table = sa mesaon the chair = sa silyain the box = sa kahonat the center = sa gitnato them = sa kanilafrom my heart = mula sa puso kofor you = para sa iyonear = malapit safar from = malayo satowards you = papunta sa iyoaround = sa may / paikot sainto the pool = sa poolSo if you hear "Put the roast chicken in the table"...you'd get why.
