I am on disability and Medicare.Medicare does not cover everything. As such, I cannot get dentures, despite sections of teeth that are now missing. Medicare will not get me glasses, despite my very poor eyesight. Medicare will not pay for a hearing aid, so please bear with me when I mishear a lot of what is said.Now, some may suggest Medicaid. My income is low enough to fall under the poverty guidelines, but the county that I live in does not count my income as being low enough for Medicaid. Once I get a job, I will be able to get health insurance, but, until then, I am in a strange no man’s land in terms of medical care. So, yes, I believe in the need for universal healthcare. Not everyone is as fortunate as I am.

I can tell you the exact moment. I married my high school sweetheart at age 19 soon after we’d graduated. I turned my head to the side away from him and saw Bud sitting in his bed, pushed up against one corner, watching us with absolute terror in his eyes. My heart broke, and suddenly I realized that it would one day be my children with that same look of fear if I stayed married to this man. I decided at that moment that this would never be my future.It took a few more months, after he lost his job and then experienced a medical emergency, before I got the courage to end it.
