Here is “My” understanding of how an admissions officer at an elite Private US college typically will read the application package:If there was a formal interview by a representative of the college, then that is typically read first to get an over view of the applicant as a Person and also the potential for a good fit with the collegeThe mandatory letter of recommendation submitted by the guidance counselor (or head master), that discusses the applicant over a several year period as both a student and as a whole PersonThe official transcript (no GPA consideration) and the secondary school report that the guidance counselor is mandated to submit which describes the types of courses offered, the degree of difficulty of the various levels, the grading scheme, and the history of that high school sending its graduates to various universities, etc.The SAT/ACT and any required TOEFL score and any highly recommended or mandated SAT subject test scoresThe two teacher letters of recommendationThe application as written by the applicant including any answers to specific questions (essays)Any supplemental letters of recommendation to describe the applicant as a PersonAny reviews of supplemental material that was submitted by the applicant. Those reviews are written by volunteer professors or college staff members who are “experts” in the area covered by the submitted material (portfolios, research papers, etc.)Then a re-read of the first item looked atThe admissions staff is divided into two pools for reviewing:US applicants: citizens, permanent residents, legal refugeesInternational applicantsUS applicants are compared with each other and the same for international applicants. Most of these colleges have a self-imposed Quota on the percentage of international undergraduate students are allowed into the college’s undergraduate Community.Each applicant's complete application is read by at Least two staff members before any initial decisions are made.NOTE: applications are not rejected. Instead the staff admits applicants until it fills its desired number.

OK, let me defend my “25% / 75%” break out of key factors for admission to MIT, or Any elite Private US university.First, more than sufficient academic prowess is mandated (required) to attend MIT or any of those colleges. The college Must believe that you can survive freshman year, then choose and do well in a major, and graduate in four years. Required but insufficient.If 60% or possibly more of the overall applicant pool has more than sufficient academic prowess and Less than 8% of the applicants are admitted, then how would You rank academic prowess in the big scheme of things?Then MIT states that they want one of the mandated letters of recommendation to come from a Humanities Teacher. What does that say about being well-rounded?And then MIT was a key player in the 80+ colleges and organizations that issued this report in early 2016: Stu Schmill endorses report on consideration of character in college admissions What does that say about getting admitted to one of those elite universities?25% / 75% is part of my Shock and Awe. There have been valedictorians with perfect or near perfect standardized test scores that have been Rejected by MIT or Harvard or others of those elite universities. Why? One of the many reasons is that the person does Not offer enough to the undergraduate community Outside of the classroom. A place like MIT has over 500 clubs/organizations/teams and needs people who Thirst to come in and become members of those entities, then lead those entities and possibly start new ones. Do you know how I spent the Summer prior to starting MIT? Not studying, but whipping myself into shape so I had an outside chance of being a member of the intercollegiate soccer team…… (I was the last one selected…..) And never having played Cricket before, I knew other MIT students who wanted to, and I started the MIT cricket club.The letter of recommendation from your Guidance Counselor is mandated (accompanies the official transcript). What will that say about you? You can not pick/choose that letter of recommendation, and that one will go to the heart of You as a Person and working well with other people at your school or in your community.Internship? Is that a real Job, or a go-for that one of your parents got for you? Was there any real commitment and leadership shown there? Is there a substantiating glowing hot letter of recommendation regarding that position? I got an excellent letter of recommendation from my manager at the McDonalds where I worked and worked very well with others, and advanced along the leadership chain. And that had Nothing to do with aerospace engineering, but it did have a lot to say about Life and Character.Leadership? Yes, that is what those colleges want. In some manner.Bad grades? Remember the mandated letters of recommendation from your guidance counselor and a humanities teacher…………………………………..I hope that gives you a better feel for the fact that MIT wants very good students who are even better People.All the best.

The elite private colleges take a very Holistic view during the admission process for freshmen.Those colleges demand academic prowess and combined with that, the ability to do other things and assist other people.Those colleges Love people who have overcome adversity. If you are assisting your single mother with taking care of your siblings, your home and your family while still doing Very well in school, that is Excellent. That will come across very nicely in a well-worded college application essay.However, that will need to be substantiated by one or two letters of recommendation.Get your guidance counselor to comment on your home situation in a positive light, and get a respected community member to write a letter of recommendation for you stating how much you assist in holding your family together.All the best.
