PDF Editor FAQ

What should I do to get over my fear of public failure?

There are two experiences that help overcome fear of failure:SuccessFailureSuccessSuccess is experienced by constructing your reality such that you experience success. For example, for an athlete, completing his daily workout each day is a small success. Completing it every day for a week is a larger success. Playing in a game and achieving close to his maximum capability (regardless of whether the game is won or lost) is a success. The first lesson is look for little successes that are achievable. Focus on acquiring as many of those as possible. Little successes can build your self-confidence tremendously. Simultaneously, avoid defining success in such a way that is unachievable. For example, if your only definition of success is "grow my startup to $2 billion net value within 3 years" your chance of success is low and you will have to delay gratification for 3 years (if you ever get there).FailureAthletes have the benefit of playing lots of games and losing them. In those games, they make many mistakes. There was a commercial where Michael Jordan remarked that he had taken the game-winning shot 200 times in his career. And missed. Experiencing failure allows you to learn that life can go on in the presence of failure. Athletes can tolerate failure because:1. They accept it is a part of doing their job. Failure is a consequence of accepting challenges. The more challenges you accept, the more often you will fail. Of course, the more often you will succeed too.2. They construct failures as part of the learning process. They tell themselves things like, "I don't fail, I only run out of time" or "There are only two types of challenges, success and learning experiences." This helps them focus on the useful aspect of failure (that failure is a better teacher than success) and reduces their fear.Concluding ThoughtsRight now, you are experiencing pressure--Fear of failure is pressure! Some things you should remember about pressure:Pressure is something you put on yourself. No other person can make you feel pressured. Situations are not inherently pressured. People apply pressure to themselves by interpreting a situation as something to be afraid of.No one performs well under pressure. The differences between successful and unsuccessful athletes is not which ones play well under pressure. It is which ones have learned to enjoy themselves in situations where other athletes are feeling fearful and pressured. The successful athletes perform just as badly when pressured. It's just that they have learned to feel pressured infrequently. The antidote to pressure is fun. Activities feel fun when you enjoy the process of doing them for their own merits. If you are working on a project that you truly enjoy doing, then it matters less what other people think of the results. Attach your feelings to the aspect you can control--your internal process--rather than to how other people react to your project. If you are proud of your own work, then the project was a success no matter what others think.Depressurizing is a learned skill. Anyone can become less fearful by changing their internal dialogue. I am not saying it is easy. Like any other difficult task, it takes time and discipline, but if every time you are tempted to self-criticize you substitute one of the expressions in 2. above, you will begin to feel less fearful.

How do I stay motivated?

Short answer, you can’t be motivated 24x7.Longer answer, this is okay, here’s why..Even the world’s top performers admit that they aren’t always motivated.Think of motivation more like a roller coaster, it goes up and down.I’ve been waking up at 5:30 a.m. everyday for the last year. The reason I’m doing this is because I have a strong desire to build my skills before going to work so that I can become self employed one day. Some of these days, I jump out of bed saying “let’s get after it!”But guess what, many of those others days, I don’t start with motivation.Instead, I need to find ways to re-charge myself so that I can get back at it.Here are the ways you can keep that motivation rollin’:1.KEEP THE END IN MIND“WHY am I doing this?”For our purposes, motivation is the feeling or state of mind that causes you to act in a certain way. It’s the hunger. The drive. The desire!Finding the true reasons for your feelings and actions will give you a far more powerful tool to drive forward. Before you try to commit to new goals or improvements, think deeply about the reasons for your actions. To identify your motivation, simply ask why.So you want to work out more… Why?Because you want to be stronger, bigger, and look better… Why?Because you want people to respect you, girls to want you, and to win potential fights. Now THAT is your motivation. The deepest root of your dreams.Motivation comes from your desired end state. By identifying what you truly want, you will better be able to manage your levels of drive and desire. Don’t be afraid to dig deep when searching for the reasons you want to become better. The more powerful your WHY, the more motivation you’ll have.2.MAINTAIN YOUR EQUIPMENTLet’s use the analogy of a road trip. If your “why” is the destination, then your motivation is the gasoline. But, in order to get to your destination, you need to keep the car in good working order.By keeping a healthy mind and body, you are maintaining your equipment for the journey. Many people say that their number one reason for not improving themselves is a lack of energy. When they get back from work or school they are mentally and physically drained.Low energy levels keep you on the couch instead of up and taking on the day.In order to keep energized and ready to get after it, fuel your body properly and regularly move it. If you’re new to diet and exercise, start with drinking more water and going for an evening run or walk.In addition, regularly check in with your mind. Give it the needed attention to stay in tip top shape.A healthy mind is the key to unlocking the world. If your mindset is weak, you will be weak.Work on monitoring your internal dialogue and make sure it is building you up, not tearing you down. Successful people talk to themselves in positive phrases while unsuccessful people use defeating and negative words. For example, a successful person will look at a challenging situation and say “what is life trying to teach me right now?” Whereas an unsuccessful person would say “why do bad things always happen to me?” as said in Keith Cameron Smith’s Top Ten Distinctions Between Millionaires and Middle Class.By using positive internal dialogue, you will be able to empower yourself.3.SURROUND YOURSELF WITH MOTIVATIONOne key to staying motivated is to be consistently seeking out external motivational stimulants. What is it that makes you “hungry”? What is it that pumps you up?Is it movies, music, pictures of strong people, books, or particular friends? While your end goal is primarily internal motivation, use some external motivation to keep going.Find that speaker or song that really gets to your core and raises the hairs on the back of your neck. For me, I love watching Gary Vaynerchuk and Jocko Willink’s videos. Any time I’m low on motivation, I throw one of their videos on and am soon filled back up ready to kill it.4.DISCIPLINED AND HABITUALBeing disciplined and having good habits keeps you moving when the motivation is low.Think about motivation as a jug of water. If you are out camping and have only one jug of water to keep hydrated, you could quickly find yourself in trouble. However, if you found a flowing stream nearby, you would be in luck. Now, you can drink from the stream as much as possible in order to save the precious jug for when you really need it.This is the same way that discipline and habits are for motivation.By becoming more disciplined and creating productive habits, you can rely on these trained responses instead of having to reach into your limited supply of motivation.Discipline is what you use in the absence of motivation. Say you have no motivation to get out of bed early, but you have been training your discipline and therefore force yourself to get out from the covers.Habits are the repeated actions you do independent of motivation. If you have a daily habit of reading for 20 minutes before breakfast, you don’t need to use motivation to get in the chair with the book.Knowing the real reason why you want to be better is the key to making lasting changes in your life. By adding a healthy body and mind on top of some discipline and daily habits, you’ll be well on your way to achieving your goals!

What are the most common reasons why Hollywood rejects screenplays from screenwriters?

A weak conflict. On its simplest level, a well-written story is about a character who has some kind of life-changing experience, which results in a rising conflict with an opposition throughout the long middle act, culminating in a powerful Crisis where all looks lost, but which leads to a climactic battle with the opposition. Incidentally, the battle does not have to involve guns, bombs, or car chases. What I often see instead in scripts is a repetitive conflict in the middle act where there is no rising action and no increasing tension—just the same basic conflict repeating itself over and over again. No conflict. Everyone seems to get along and although obstacles appear, they are easily overcome until the character wins the day. This is often the result of a character who does not have an outside goal to strive for.Weak or non-existent subplots. One cause of #1 and #2 is a lack of strong subplots that complicate the main plot.Characters we have seen in other moviesCharacters that are superficially characterized and poorly developed. They come across as “action figures” being moved around on the writer’s game board (the script). This includes the confidant that has no other purpose in the movie but to be a sounding board to the central character, and has no life or personality of his/her own.Scenes and actions we have seen in other movies.Dialogue we have heard in other movies.Dialogue that is obvious (“on the nose”) and typical with no originality and no room for subtext.Characters “making speeches” rather than having realistic sounding conversations. A symptom of this is a lot of overlong speeches.Internal dialogue in the form of lots of self-talk, over-written narration, or voiced-over thoughts.Narrative description that is better suited for a novel than a spec screenplay. This involves not understanding clearly the concept of lean writing (saying as much as you can with as few words as you can) and describing specific details that are important and excluding incidental details that are not important to the story or character.Narrative description that mentions thoughts, insights, feelings, and other things that cannot appear on the movie screen. For example, “When he sees her smile, it warms his heart because it reminds him of the times his mother smiled.” How will that appear on the movie screen?Poor spec script formatting and an apparent inattention to script appearance, which also includes lots of typos, poor grammar, confusing punctuation, tons of camera directions, and so on. To a reader, this implies a minimum of effort just to get the script sold.Scripts loaded with specific song titles.Let’s stop there. I am sure that the minute I click “Submit,” I’ll think of 14 more, but these will get us started. :-)There is another reason I should mention: even though your script might be wonderful, it doesn’t suit their purposes. In such a case, carry on!Good luck and keep writing!
