Indian Railways is not in budget surplus to change whole of its infrastructure overnight. The development has to be done in stages.Introducing Pythons : Pythons are freight trains which are much longer than the ordinary trains. Usually a python will be at least 2 times of the normal freight train. These pythons have 108 wagons hauled with 2–3 locomotives. These trains require longer loop line when compared to the normal ones, as the length of these trains is almost 1.4 kms. With the modifications in the loop lines, these trains can be introduced. The overall capacity of the track can be improved and also the freight can be transported at higher speed.Implementing Semi-high speed trains : The current average speed of the express trains in 55 kmph to 75 kmph. Due to the low average speeds, the capacity of the tracks has been underutilized due to these slow running trains. Our tracks have a capacity to withstand the trains up to 200 kmph, without any further modifications. These tracks may not support the high- speed trains, but can be used for semi-high speed trains with speeds up to 180 kmph. With the improvement in the average speed, more trains can be introduced and the usage of the tracks can be improved.Implementing Dedicated Freight corridors : A separate railway line has to be laid for freight movement. This will boost the existing line to provide hassle free service to the passenger trains and the new track can be used by the Freight trains. Indian Railways has started the work of Western and Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridors and has to be developed through out its network.Utilizing the railway lands for other purposes : Indian Railway has a huge chunk of land under its name. This is not being effectively used. The unused land can be given on lease and revenue can be generated. Even the Railway stations can be developed. Well maintained restaurants and hotels with accommodated can be developed, which can fetch a huge revenue for the railways. Some of the A-1 railway stations have good restaurants in it. This should be implemented in all the A-1 and A-2 stations.Food Court at Hazrat Nizamuddin StationImplementing Scheduled Freight trains : Indian Railways do not operate scheduled freight trains. The freight trains as of now, do not follow a timetable and are halted anywhere and at anytime for giving way to the passenger trains. Because of this, almost all the freight trains reach the destination much later than they are expected to. If the schedued trains are implemented, timely delivery of the goods is ensured and the business will be improved.Energy Management : There is no proper management of energy in Indian Railways. Indian railways should take a step towards creating and utilizing solar energy, instead of purchasing industrial power from the power grids.
