What happens if 2 bidders at an auction keep raising the price and never stop?My band played at a “posh do” once which ended in a charity auction. One of the items up for sale was a football shirt belonging to one of the England players in the 1966 World Cup (having no interest whatsoever in football, I’m afraid it didn’t register with me which player it was). The bidding was down to two people - one was a seasoned businessman type, wearing an expensive suit and, apparently, with bottomless pockets; the other was a young lad of 11 or 12 whose bids were being supported by his parents. The bidding had reached over £900 and the young lad had rung his grandparents to see if they could help. Between the grandparents and the parents, after much discussion and humming and hawing, it was decided that the lad’s family could just about stretch to £1000. The businessman then bid £1200 - and we all watched as the young lad’s world fell apart. He bravely conceded defeat and, even more bravely, congratulated the businessman on his purchase. The businessman then responded by giving the shirt to the young lad and wishing him well. The whole room was in tears - when interviewed by the local press afterwards, the businessman said “Well, it was a charity auction, and bidding in an auction was a lot more fun than simply writing a cheque for £1200 - and I wasn’t going to let that young lad spend his family’s life savings on a football shirt…..”
