Verbs have their unique jobs to do in telling our story. By story, I mean whatever it is we are trying to communicate. Verbs have two distinct tasks to perform.Verbs tell when something happened in our story. Past, present, future.Verbs tell the duration of that action. Verbs answer the question, how long did the action last?Flew is a simple past tense. It tells when the action occurred, i.e. in the past. The simple past is noncommittal regarding the duration of action in the past. It simply means that at some time, or even at all time, in the past, time passed quickly.The simple past tense, flew, or any other simple past tense, never has an accompanying form of the verb, to have, along with it.The present perfect tense, has flown, tells that the action occurred in the past, but it is more specific than the simple past tense about the duration of action. Present perfect tells that the action began in the past(flown, past participle of to fly) and was completed in the present (present tense, has). The present perfect is different from the past perfect. Past perfect is the past participle accompanied by the past tense of to have, i.e. had. The past perfect means that the action occurred in the past and was completed sometime before the present.Since you seem to have included the present tense, has, with both the past tense, flew and the perfect tense, flown, it makes the choice regarding which is correct fairly easy. The simple past, flew, would not properly appear with a form of the verb, to have. The past participle, flown, would never appear without either the present or past form of to have (or another helping verb), i.e. has or had.

In his essay "Remembrance of Things Present: Present Tense in Contemporary Fiction," author and professor David Jauss traces the recent trend of using the present tense in fiction writing. He describes how prior to the 1960s, few works of fiction relied on the present tense as the principal tense and how in recent decades, the present tense has grown significantly in popularity. Jauss then examines seven advantages and ten disadvantages of using the present tense in writing fiction.The seven advantages that he describes in his essay include:The present tense has more immediacy than the past tense, in that the reader sees changes as they occur without being colored by subsequent understanding as would happen with a past-tense narrative.The present tense provides temporal realism. Without flashbacks, flashforwards, and time compression via summaries, the passage of time in fiction written in the present tense more closely aligns with the reader's concept of real time.Telling a past story in the present tense "defamiliarizes" and intensifies a scene by making it seem more strange and new.Because the shift to the present tense can be disorienting, it can work well for characters with disoriented states of mind and for dreams.The present tense can work well in characterizing a protagonist as someone who lives in and only thinks about the present or as someone who's unwilling or unable to think about or remember the past.The present tense can help convey a theme that the past is always in our minds, even in the present.The present tense simplifies tense handling since there are fewer present tense verb forms than past-tense verb forms. For example, in a past-tense story, a flashback would involving switching to past perfect ("he had walked down that same hallway only days ago"), whereas in a primarily present tense story, a flashback would just be the simple past ("yesterday, he leapt downstairs, only to find...").Points 4, 5, and 6 suggest that the present tense can be effective if a story's theme and form fits into a mold where the protagonist tightly couples the past and the present.
