In addition to the National Parks, National Monuments, etc. that others have mentioned. . . very large tracts of forest are United States National Forest, managed by the US Forest Service—a government agency. The USFS manages 155 National Forests and 20 National Grasslands, collectively making up 769,000 km2 of land (that’s an area roughly the size of the state of Texas).National forests are different from National Parks, Monuments, etc., because they are managed for multiple uses. With the appropriate leases, timber companies can cut down trees, mining companies can mine, etc. This causes conflict between extractive industries and environmental groups. That said, the USFS can and does designate wilderness regions where logging, roads, motor vehicles, etc. are prohibited.Exactly what’s in a national forest depends on the specific forest, but there are usually campgrounds, sometimes cabins, hiking trails, horse trails, ski trails in some areas, and places where you can camp in the back country, collect minerals and fossils, hunt, fish—or even search for mushrooms. You may have to purchase a permit to camp in a developed campground, and you need licenses to hunt or fish, but as for simply walking and enjoying nature. . . that is generally free.PS: My wife read this answer, and she wanted to add that she grew up in the 1980s and attended a Christian school. . . where she was taught that people in the USSR were starving and didn’t have any food, were forbidden to worship God, and wanted to nuke the USA.
