Yes, I didn’t realize just how much until I saw it in action. When I got to high school in Virginia, after having spent much of my life in Massachusetts, I was quite surprised (shocked) to see the “Fellowship of Christian Athletes” being a school activity. It seemed to me a violation of the tenet separation of church and state, and being a precocious young man I began to explore the issue.I decided to found the Fellowship of Atheist Americans in my school. I was met with resistance by the school but more shockingly, people came out of the woodwork to threaten me physically, tell me I was going to hell, that I’m amoral, etc. In spite of this, I continued with my effort, filing paperwork to form my club.After weeks of no reply from the school administration and no progress in-sight, I contacted the ACLU of Virginia by mail. Three days later I received a FedEx overnight envelope from the ACLU offering their support and suggesting I show the letter to the school. My approval came within minutes of sharing the letter. They must’ve just lost the paperwork, right?After the school resource officer called my mother and told her I was running a subversive, satanic organization I decided to give the experiment a rest but it was an eye-opening experience.Not everyone has to agree with me, and I respect people’s right to believe whatever they want so long as they do not harm others. Diversity of thought breeds strength.

My daughter was in ninth grade when her high school dress code made the news. (Uh-oh.)It was a very warm spring, and students of all genders began wearing less clothing to school. But it was girls’ tank tops that got the most attention. Suddenly tank tops were dress code violations if bra straps were visible. There was a lot of excitement, but the school administrators held firm. The exact language of the updated dress code was, “no exposed bra straps under tank tops.”The girls were great at following the letter of the law. The next day, 2,000 ninth through twelfth grade girls dressed in layers. They left home wearing shirts over tank tops. As soon as they got to school, they met in locker rooms and bathrooms to take off their shirts and bras and wore tank tops without undergarments of any kind. There were no exposed bra straps under tank tops in the entire school.The male students began walking into walls. There were minor injuries including bruises and nosebleeds.The girls calmly and comfortably went about their day and said not as much as one word about the dress code. At the end of the day, the young women returned to locker rooms and bathrooms to put on the bras and shirts they had originally worn to school that morning. Parents were not aware of the girls’ literal and silent demonstration of dress code compliance. This was in the ‘90’s before cell phones and digital cameras, so there was very little objective evidence of the situation.It took awhile for the high school dress code to be re-updated after that. As I recall, lawyers got involved. It turned out that bra straps under tank tops may be acceptable after all.Yay, girls!!

Dear Dr. H,Just wanted you to know this year I am retiring after 34 years of teaching. I have two Master’s Degrees, and am highly qualified in the state of ….. in Early Childhood Education w/SPED endorsement, Learning Behavior Specialist(SPED), Elementary Education, and School Administration.I have been offered a post-retirement position as a Developmental Therapist for the Early Intervention Program in our state.Guess not being the kind of teacher you were trying to produce, worked out pretty well for me.
