PDF Editor FAQ

Why does China have a gentler and more considerate culture than the nations of the West?

Q:Why does China have a gentler and more considerate culture than the nations of these West?1 Answer: I think the roots of Chinese behaviour lie deep in history and can partly be measured from the writings and books of the earliest Western visitors to China, particularly from the Papal Ambassador Rubroquis and from the comments of Marco Polo himself. In this brief Answer I can only hint at the enormous scale of Robroquis and Marco Polo’s comments about their experiences in China. Nonetheless the few words I can quote show the enormous cultural difference between Chinese social behaviour and that of the West which enormously impressed the Western visitors and which can still be seen today.2 Introduction. During the 1960s I read The Travels Of Marco Polo [the Venetian] (revised from Marsden’s Translation and edited with an introduction by Manual Komroff) The Liverwright Publishing Corp., New York, 1926.That book was a key one missing from my library. So when that book was withdrawn from the North Independence Branch of Mid-Continent Public Library in 317 W Highway 24, Independence, Missouri, and appeared for sale on the internet at an affordable low price, I bought it.3 Two Pages from the Introduction to “The Travels of Marco Polo”Page xxv of this book looks exactly like this: :Rubroquis, an Envoy of the Pope, noted thatChinese social intercourse was courteous, polite and full of respectful familiarityEven when there were deep differences, there were no quarrels, blows, combats or bloodshedThe Chinese every where were conspicuously honestThere was no need to place locks or guards on wagons and other propertyStraying cattle were arranged to be speedily recovered andAlthough food was scarce, it was generously shared with those who needed it.Manuel Komroff’s Introduction adds: “The spirit of tolerance can be noted on almost every page of Marco Polo’s Record.” and “Jews and Christians had complete religious freedom, and their temples were exempt from taxation.”Not only was the behaviour of Marco Polo’s Chinese hosts very civilised and considerate, but also China had achieved “two outstanding engineering marvels” consisting of the Great Wall of China and the Grand Canal.Page xvii continues:13th century China was not simply a socially advanced culture, the country excelled in the arts (“painting, engraving, bronze casting, sculpture, porcelain making and architecture” are mentioned above) and in literature. The greatest Chinese poets are both eighth-century poets - Li Po and Tu Fu. A great deal of Li Po’s poetry reads to me like a Chinese version of Edward Fitzgerald’s Rubiayat of Omar Khayyam (1038–1141) in its praise of wine and drunkenness while the wide-ranging poetry of Tu Fu is probably rightly regarded by the BBC (not a source to which I’d normally give any credence) as the “Chinese Shakespeare.” Of course all translations are illusory because none carry the same associative context of the original text, and perhaps we could for the sake of cultural balance re-interpret Shakespeare as the English version of Tu Fu.And perhaps fictionally Ezra Pound comments “And Li Po also died drunk, he tried to embrace a moon in the Yellow River.” The poetry of Tu Fu is exceptional because its highest points may have been reached in the last decade of his life as he travelled around China in a fruitless effort to escape the Chinese civil war then raging. Then then there was the Marco Polo observed world-changing Chinese inventions of paper, of wood block book printing, of movable type and paper money. And the many Chinese steel machines, the product of most inventive and innovative manufacturing economy in the world. The Chinese blast furnaces of Marco Polo’s day were the largest and most advanced in the world and Kublia Khan had inherited the high-functioning industrial economy of the Northern Song Empire. The Chinese firework displays at a time when Europe knew nothing of gunpowder (invented in China c850AD) probably made a great impression on Marco and his father Niccolo and his uncle Macceo.3 European Reaction To Macro Polo’s Book of His TravelsEuropeans responded to Macro Polo’s dictated-in-prison book as if it were “fake news” and fictional. Macro had begun his travels at the age of 17 and had returned to Venice 24 years later. The idea that a transEuropean civilisation existed in China was not a concept the egocentric Western nations were prepared to accept and even today many European and American scholars appear to be inadequately informed about the historical reality and continuing effect of Chinese history on their modern behaviour. The deep reporting on Chinese history originated by Joseph Needham and the continually more extensive reports of the China Project (see Science and Civilisation in China - Wikipedia) from 1954 to now (2020) should have better informed Western scholars about Chinese history. But it often has not.4 The Polos Were Very CleverMacro Polo and his father and uncle were very clever. They hid jewels and other precious stones into the usually stinking rags they wore when they returned to Venice. Polo’s relatives were astonished by the riches which emerged from their cut-open clothing. As page xx of the Introduction records“The Polos exchanged their acquired possessions for jewels and other precious objects that were easiIy carried and sewn into their clothes…”Marco Polo was asked on his deathbed to retract the observations in his book. He replied “I didn’t tell you even the half of it” and subsequent research has validated that comment.5 CaveatsThis brief Answer only addresses the central issue of this question by using two pages of the introduction plus some other relevant information as an evidential base. The book is 357 pages with a closely-typed 12 page Index.I know when I have tried to discuss this issue with friends, many are so poorly educated as to be unable to accept that a well-developed Chinese manufacturing economy and welfare state was created by Wang Anshi in the eleventh century along with a fully-formed Chinese culture. The first great manufacturing economy with an effective social contract and welfare system existed in China more than four centuries before Columbus “discovered” America.6 Conclusions6.1 China has had a gentler and more considerate culture than the nations of the West for centuries, and its current mercantile culture is soundly founded on its previous history.6.2 The West, by comparison, has had and still enjoys the results of a history of rule-by-the-rich, of the ”Greed is good” philosophy and the previous assassination of disobedient leaders and the ethnic cleansing of native peoples (eg the native Americans, the Australian Aborigines, etc) and that racialist and totally unacceptable attitude seems often to prevail at the highest levels of American and European policy.6.3 I believe that the kinder and more considerate Chinese treatment of others both inside and outside China has its cultural foundation in the Analects of Confucius with its stress on good social behaviour while the “Greed is good” Western behaviour has much of is origin in the writings of Adam Smith who argued that profit-seeking businessmen, acting from financial motives, nonetheless had a positive social effect. Not nowadays. But that’s too large a topic for this Answer

What are some interesting experiences you have had in a restaurant outside of your homeland?

I was 14 and on a two-week trip to Mexico with the combined Spanish classes of two U.S. schools—some two dozen students in total. We were in Guadalajara, Jalisco, and found ourselves at a Denny’s. Well, this Denny’s was obviously aimed at American tourists because the menu looked exactly the same as you would’ve found in a U.S. Denny’s at the time, even being completely in English. Those prices, though…!$6 for orange juice? $12 for French toast?? This was roughly 10 times what we would’ve paid in the U.S.!Then I realized that, this being Mexico, the prices were naturally quoted in Mexican pesos, and the exchange rate at the time averaged roughly 10 pesos to the USD. The peso sign ($), though, was identical to the usual printed form of the U.S. dollar sign, and this, combined with the exclusive use of English on the menu, threw me at first!Well, the menu wasn’t completely in English. The introductory page on the inside front cover assured the reader that “At Denny’s… mi casa es su casa.”
