This is based upon a misconception, with the notion that some autists who are high functioning are somehow not really autistic in the true sense, but ‘have it’ in a mild form, like getting mild flu or some other contagious disease. Of course we do not get autistic in that way. Autistic is what we are, with varying degrees of achievement in a number of areas, transcending our condition. Those who have reached the level being high functioning have put in a lot of hard work, often at the cost of being physically ill in the process. Many of us have multiple health problems because of the effort we put into our work. Often parents and teachers have also put in a lot of work to help the high functionary achieve reasonable levels of mastery. It is then an insult to say we are mildly autistic.You would have to see us when we are ill to understand the full picture of what the cost has been to us. The fact we manage to conceal our true nature does not mean we are that odd but apparently normal person we present to everybody. Like everybody else, we would always like to present our best side to the world, including to our carers and doctors.This is one reason why I prefer the social psychiatry model in looking a different profiles of this condition, and individual features that make up each Asperger. This gets away from the medical systemic model, and the notion of diseases. Syndromes allow us to break down our vision of people into features (not symptoms), and how each person has their own. It is possible to model more accurately the nature of the basic autistic condition, and how the person has transcended them. It gives credit to major achievement, and does not take it for granted. Profiling is modelling that is as fine grained as our autistic experience of the world. It is also highly successful.
