Here’s why…Independent Educational Consultants can join one or both of two national organizations: IECA (Independent Educational Consultant's Association) or HECA (Higher Education Consultant’s Association). Those associations have minimum membership standards for new members and a second level of membership for experienced members, plus they each enforce their code of ethics. Those codes includes limits on public advertising statements, promises of outcomes, and assurances of insider contacts.In addition, some educational consultants seek out the only applicable certification, the Certified Educational Planner credential granted by AICEP (American Institute of Certified Educational Planners). To earn that certification, the consultant must submit an application revealing sufficient experience, training, etc for consideration. If those initial credentials are deemed sufficient by the AICEP Commission, AICEP will administer its Certification Examination to the applicant. Recertification (which must be accomplished every 5 years) requires proof of continuing professional education and more.Like some of my colleagues, I am a Certified Educational Planner, a Professional Member of IECA, a Certified Educational Planner, a full member of HECA, and a member of NACAC (National Association for College Admissions Counseling), and NJACAC (New Jersey Association for College Admissions Counseling).I have considerable expertise in selective and highly selective college admissions - what ever rankings list you might use to arrive at “top 50” - and I surely understand financial aid at those colleges and universities (as do many of my colleagues). They are all excellent, but they are deeply different and represent a limited universe.The other is to focus less on whether or not you will be admitted and more on how you might improve and deepen the picture you paint of yourself as an applicant.If you choose a US consultant to help you, consider whether it is important to you that the person holds credentials reflecting a professional commitment to the field of College Admissions, because there is no licensure in this field. The only certification in the field of Independent Educational Consultants is the CEP designation granted by the American Institute of Certified Educational Planners (AICEP).
