How does the payments ecosystem work? What does the payments workflow look like, from the merchant’s card payment to the acquirer? What are the roles of each of the main firms in the space, like First Data, PayPal, Neteller, Square, Visa, etc.?

This is a pretty wide open question. Will try to answer as much as I can. I've included more visual versus text, as visuals can very easily get the point across, in a few minutes. Should you wish to explore further, I have provided some relevant links for further reading.First of all, the definition. When discussing payment systems, it is so easy to have different understanding of what a payment system is.WHAT IS A PAYMENT SYSTEM?a payment system consists of a set of instruments, bankingprocedures and, typically, interbank funds transfer systems thatensure the circulation of moneyGlossary definition from the Committee on Payment and Settlement Systems (BIS - Bank of International Settlements). See glossary at: http://www.bis.org/publ/cpss00b.pdf (March 2003)In its basic form a payment ecosystem has this very important singular relationship, without which a payment cannot be made:The whole concept of a "payment" is to exchange money between two parties, so hence the Payer and Payee concept.*Barring Bitcoin, regulated money (which is what 99.999+% of us use) requires a bank. It is not necessarily that a bank is required to move money, but a Bank is at the core, for example in Cash-to-Cash transaction, whilst a bank is not involved, a Bank was the source of the cash and could very well be the destination of cash as well (if) and when it gets deposited. The definition of a Payment System can be visualized as follows:The Payment Instrument section above can be expanded as:Central to all this is the Bank, and how the bank interacts with various entities would be explained below. First, you have to understand with whom a commercial bank can interact with:The above essentially represents the eco-system in which a commercial (non-investment bank) is operating in. The ovals in purple, represents the various verticals a bank can choose to associate themselves with and work in/with.A slightly wider view of the same would be:Credit: Above visuals are extracted from the presentation "An Introduction of Payment Systems" by Dyah N.K. Not every transaction set shown below has to be on the switch, this is just a unified example, it all depends from switch to switch and operators/usage of that switch.BANK TO BANK (SETTLEMENT OF FUNDS)One thing that confuses people a lot is how is the bank to bank settlement done?I wrote a detailed answer on this which can be read here: Faisal Khan's answer to How does the settlement of payments work in banks? Specifically, how do payment systems that are connected to multiple banks actually settle the amount between two banks? To better understand how money is actually transferred between banks and different countries, you would most likely want to read up on this: Faisal Khan's answer to How does money transfer between banks and different countries work?WIRE TRANSFERS - HOW DO THEY WORK?From a wire transfer point of view, what exactly happens when a Wire Transfer is made, please read this answer: Faisal Khan's answer to What exactly happens when a wire transfer is made? How does the money travel from the sender's account to the recipient's account? How much time does each step take? What regulatory measures are in place, if any?Even more important is to understand what exactly happens when a remittance transfer is made? What are all the steps involved in a money-transfer transaction: Faisal Khan's answer to How does a remittance money transfer work? What are all the steps and who is involved?PAYPAL WALLETBecause PayPal will so frequently be cited as an example, many people need to learn up as to what exactly PayPal is and how does money loading/off-loading on a PayPal wallet actually work?To understand how it all works, here is a detailed answer on how PayPal works: Faisal Khan's answer to What is a Paypal account? They provide technology and hardware, which enables the merchant to process the transaction.Role of the Issuer: The issuer is the bank (Capital One, CIBC, RBC, etc) that provides the cardholder with their credit card. They bare the responsibility of approving the cardholder and billing and collecting the owed funds from cardholder.Credit Card Associations: Associations (Visa, MaterCard, AMEX, et) are commonly referred to as the credit card and debit card companies. The role of the associations is to govern the policies pertaining to their bank cards, monitor processing activity, and oversee the clearing and settlement of transactions. Currently VISA is the most popular association with approximately 65% transaction volume.ISOs (Independent Sales Organizations): ISOs (Payfirma, Square, etc) are organizations that partner with acquirers to open merchant accounts, handle support, manage payment processing, and build added-value technology on behalf of acquirers. ISOs do this in exchange for a percentage of the transaction volume.Merchant: The merchant is a business owner who submits a request to an ISO/acquirer for the ability to accept credit. Merchants are approved under the qualifications set by the associations and the policy of the underwriters.Cardholder: Cardholders (consumers) are customers of a bank that request a credit card. The cardholder will be approved by the issuer based on credit worthiness.Source: Payment Processing 101Here is a graph of how transfer fees in a credit card transaction works:A simple visual, to give you an example of some of the vendors involved:Juxtapose this to mobile payments, and it is inherently no different. What exactly is the problem with the Texan voter ID law?

I'm in Texas. I was a college student here, but I'm originally from New York. My NY ID expired, so I needed to get a new one in Texas. Seems simple enough, right?I couldn't do it.The first thing you have to prove is your identity. There are three ways an individual can verify his/her identity:Bring one item listed in the “Primary Identity Documents” category orBring two items listed in the “Secondary Identity Documents” category orBring one item listed in the “Secondary Identity Documents” category and two documents listed in the “Supporting Identity Documents” categoryThe primary documents areTexas driver license or Texas identification card not expired more than 2 years. Proof of citizenship will be required if not previously establishedNot from TexasUnexpired U.S. passport book or cardDidn't have a passport. Passports are very expensive, by the way…U.S. Certificate of Citizenship or Certificate of Naturalization (N-560, N-561, N-645, N-550, N-55G, N-570 or N-578)Born in the USUnexpired Department of Homeland Security or U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services document with verifiable data and identifiable photo, such as one of the following:U.S. Citizen Identification Card (I-179 or I-197)Permanent Resident Card (I-551)Foreign passport with attached temporary I-551 (immigrant visa endorsed with ADIT stamp)Temporary Resident Identification Card (I-688)Employment Authorization Card (I-766)U.S. Travel Document (I-327 or I-571)Advance Parole Document (I-512 or I-512L)I-94 stamped Sec. 208 Asylee with photoI-94 stamped Sec. 207 Refugee with photoRefugee Travel Letter with photo, stamped by Customs and Border ProtectionAmerican Indian Card (I-872)Northern Mariana card (I-873)Foreign passport with attached visa and Form I-94None of these apply to anyone born in the USUnexpired U.S. military ID card for active duty, reserve or retired personnel with identifiable photoCivilianAs a civilian born in the US outside of Texas, I had none of these. In fact, any young, poor would-be voter will likely have none of these, even if they are born in Texas. How about two secondary documents?Original or certified copy of a birth certificate issued by a State Bureau of Vital Statistics or equivalent agency from a U.S. state, U.S. territory, the District of Columbia or a Canadian provinceNOTE: Because Puerto Rican statute provides that Puerto Rican birth certificates issued before July 1, 2010 are no longer valid, the Department cannot recognize these birth certificates as proof of identification or lawful presence. For more information please select the following link. http://prfaa.pr.gov/birthcertificatesnd2.aspFor U.S. citizens born abroad—Certificate of Report of Birth (DS-1350 or FS-545) or Consular Report of Birth (FS-240) issued by the U.S. Department of StateOriginal or certified copy of a court order with name and date of birth indicating a name and/or gender change from a U.S. state, U.S. territory, the District of Columbia or a Canadian provinceObviously no one is going to have both of the first two, since you can't be born both in and out of the US. You only have the third one if you've legally changed your name and/or gender, which I have not. The “two secondary documents” option is pretty insincere.I didn't actually have a copy of my birth certificate though, so that excludes me completely. It costs about $40 to get a copy of your birth certificate and takes weeks. For someone living paycheck-to-paycheck, that's not an option. But wait, there's more!I also had to prove residency. That requires two separate documents. Let's see how I did…Any of the following documents will be accepted to verify an individual’s Texas residency. The two documents provided must be issued by different companies or agencies. For example, an individual may not use a water bill and an electricity bill from the same company.NOTE: Remember, all documents presented must contain the individual’s name and Texas residential address.Current deed, mortgage, monthly mortgage statement, mortgage payment booklet or a residential rental/lease agreementYes, I have a lease agreement. That's one!Valid, unexpired Texas voter registration cardNo. New to the stateTexas motor vehicle registration or titleNo carTexas boat registration or titleNo boat eitherConcealed Handgun License (CHL) or License to Carry (LTC)No gun eitherUtility statement (including electric, water, natural gas, satellite TV, cable TV or noncellular phone bill) dated within 90 days of the date of applicationRenting a campus dorm. No grades yet.W-2 or 1099 tax form from the current tax yearFiled in NYMail from financial institutions; including checking, savings, investment account and credit card statements dated within 90 days of the date of applicationBroke college students don't get this kind of mail.Mail from a federal, state, county or city government agency, or a third-party representing a government agency dated within 90 days of the date of applicationNothing…Current automobile payment bookletNo carPre-printed paycheck or payment stub dated within 90 days of the date of applicationStudentCurrent documents issued by the U.S. military indicating residence addressCivilianDocument from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice indicating the applicant's recent release or paroleNo criminal record.Current Form DS2019, I-20 or a document issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration ServicesBorn in the USVeteran's Health Identification Card (VHIC)CivilianLetter of Texas residency issued by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD)Still no criminal recordThat's it… I only had one of the two documents necessary. I had to wait until I went back to NY to get a new ID.If you are homeless, staying with friends/family, living in a shelter, couch surfing, etc… you have none of these and cannot get a Texas state ID.Some of the other acceptable forms of voter identification may be easier for certain individuals, but this is hardly a “minor hassle”.

Which celebrity did you meet only to find out they’re a total jerk?

Back in the late 1980s I managed a chain of Video and Electronic stores in Manhattan. It started out as a part-time college job at one of the stores and I worked up from there. The store I started at was on the Upper East Side (86th street and 3rd Avenue). So, we had a lot of wealthy jerks who were prone to feel entitled to special treatment and prone to melt downs if they didn’t get it, celebrity or not.Three Celebrity incidents stand out:Regis Phlbin-JerkWe had a perfectly delightful customer, Joy Philbin. She set up the account and would call to reserve movies for rental to pick up later (a service we provided), but we were not supposed to reserve new movies (For special customers I would make an exception). At the time, I was not a morning person and so had no idea at the time who she or her husband were other than that she was warm and personable customer. One Friday, she called to reserve a hot new release, Purple Rain, and an older movie. She said that she would be in between 5:00 and 7:00. I told her that this was a HOT movie and I would hold it until 7 and then have to release it. If she was going to be later, please call. She was perfectly fine with this.7:00 pm rolls around and we are all rented out on Purple Rain and I am turning people down which is OK since I was able to sell a lot of copies since it was only $19.95 and I gave the customer my 25% employee discount. At 7:30 PM, I finally rent out the reserved copy to another good customer. Just before 8:00 PM a short man who looks familiar walks in wearing a full length fur coat, pushes past other customers at the counter and says he’s here to pick up the movies his wife reserved. I asked him for her name, which seemed to offend him. He puffs up and says “Joy. Joy Philbin, and I’m Regis.” So, I grab the older movie and apologize, but tell him I am all out of Purple Rain. He whines, “But she reserved it!” I tell him that I told her I could only hold it until 7:00 PM and in fact had held it until 7:30. He begins to rant and rave and demands that I open one of the for sale copies and rent it to him. I tell him that I cannot, but, since his wife is a good customer I can sell it to him with my 25% employee discount. After some more ranting, raving, cursing and insulting (while I helped other customers) he finally agrees to buy the movie and just charge it to her Credit Card on file. Here is where I get to be a dick. I look up her account and it says that I can’t rent to him or charge the movie to her account as he is not listed as an authorized user, but he is free to set up his own account and I hand him the form to fill out. More cursing and insults and “Do you know who I am” and trying to get the other customers to agree with him that I am being ridiculous. Finally, he finishes the form and I ask him what would you like to rent, Through gritted teeth he names the movie, and I say, “Oh, I’m sorry, that’s on reserve for another customer.” He is silent, gripping the counter tightly. He then picks up the Purple Rain that he has not paid for and storms out. I wrote it up as a rental, let the $5/day for a new release build up for two months, then charged his card $300 for rental fees and the standard $75 for the movie. Neither he nor his wife complained or ever came in again.John F Kennedy Jr. - JerkOne night he came in near closing with his blonde of the moment. At the time, he had just come back to NYC and was staying with mom nearby. He said she only had a Betamax, a format that we only had a limited selection of. After picking multiple movies that we only had on VHS, I let them behind the counter to pick from the movies on the shelf. They chose Broadway Danny Rose and then asked of we had adult films. I showed him the limited selection and he told her to pick. She closed her eyes and spun around and pointed. They ended up with Bodacious Ta-Tas, a spoof of Tom Hanks’ Bachelor Party.I set him and her up with accounts, Name, address, Phone, Credit Card. He rented Broadway Danny Rose and she rented the porn. They signed the rental agreements and left. A week later, he has not returned the films. I called the number, turns out to be the doorman. I explained that Mr. Kennedy had rented some movies and not returned them and I need him to return them and pay the rental fee or I would have to charge him the rental and retail price for the films. FOUR calls and one visit to the building after work and each time the doorman assured me he had passed on the message. On a second visit to the building, I happened to get there as he was coming in. So I approached him and reminded him of the movies and volunteered to go up with him and wait outside the apartment while he got the films. He went NUCLEAR, yelling, screaming, cursing and told me his time was too valuable to dig for the films and that I would get the films when he had had time to dig them out or I could just charge them for the films.Sooooo…Time to be a dick again. The next day I charged him for both rentals and $75.00 per film purchase cost and then called Page Six, the gossip section of the New York Post. and told them the story. They printed “Fickle Finger of Fate chooses JFK Jr.s Entertainment for the Evening” and gave the name and synopsis for the movie. He called them and said he never rented the movie and could prove it (OF course he didn’t, the young lady did-lol). They printed a retraction the next day.He came back in on a Sunday (my day off). I got a call from my Assistant Manager telling me that he came in, threw both movies at her and demanded to see the manager. Well, the Music department manager handled it for Carol (a 5′2″ woman weighing less than 100 lbs). I was told he stomped up and down the aisles, yelling, screaming, cursing and throwing records and tapes going on about how this could hurt his political career and how some day when he was President he was going to destroy the lives of everyone who worked there.Jerry Butler (R.I.P.) - Nice GuyJerry Butler was a successful porn star back in the 1980s who was married to Lisa Loring (Wednesday from the original Addams Family and a talented make-up artist). He would come in and rent on a regular basis. Always polite and respectful and would buy films he was in from us to have a complete collection (I went out of my way to find some hard to find discontinued films). He asked me to prominently display and recommend movies with him to customers and we went through his “catalog” and agreed on which ones I could recommend if they got a good review in RH Rimmer’s Porn guide. For another time: Other celebrities that came in: Peter Boyle and Jack Warden who were great to deal with but very quirky.EDIT:Lol. It seems that I struck several nerves with the JFK Jr. story and the Jerry Butler story. At least the people with a problem with the JFK JR. Story had the balls to comment publicly. A bunch of stick up the ass cowards private messaged me about treating a porn star as a “good person” and “promoting smut” and “the objectification of women.” Then they blocked me before I could respond. Maybe I’ll screen capture their rants and tag them in a post. Some people got abusive in the comments and I either reported or deleted them, depending on the severity, and even ranted on what I charged them. So, let me break it down for those to young to know, and to shallow/lazy to research:I worked at the location noted from 1984–1986. meaning, from 20–22.Video tapes were just taking off in the mass market thanks to VHS and were Expensive. Retail prices of tapes ran generally $69.95, $79.95 for mainstream movies and $59.95 for Porn. $99.95 for laser disc on all types, (Commando came out at a premium of $89.95 trying to push the envelope, but failed).BETA machines, exclusively from Sony at the time ran $800-$1,200 (Which was probably why Jackie O. had one, as she could afford it. Definitely not a mass market solution).VHS from JVC (and licensed to Panasonic, Emerson, GE, Mitsubishi and others) ran from $350-$750 depending on the quality and features. (And quickly dropped, and so, dominating the market).$5.00 for the first night, $3.00 per additional night was fairly standard at that time, as was $5.00 per night for new releases to encourage renters to return the tapes timely so others can rent them. Video Room, Crazy Eddie and others had similar rates. Tower Video and RKO Video turned the market upside down and dropped the prices to $1.99 per night before Blockbuster came on the scene.Paramount changed the dynamics in ‘88/’89 when, at Christmas, they re-released all their movies at $29.95. This significantly lowered the “Barrier to entry” in the market and put a lot of mom-and-pop stores and small chains out of business as the big guys entered the market. There is more, (I actually lived this time and wrote a paper on it for my marketing class), but let’s get to the meat of things.Regis PhilbinI could have called the cops and reported him for theft. Multiple witnesses, store security tapes, etc. However, I chose not to.JFK Jr.I cut him a lot of slack and let him behind the counter and stayed half an hour after closing to accommodate him.Like every sleazy politician, he covered his ass by having his nameless bimbo-du-jour rent the porn tape.He filled out and signed a membership agreement that required the following:His name as it appeared on the credit cardHis true address that matched the Credit Card Billing addressHis true home phone number (and work number IF he chose.)Understanding that on the First rental, we would get approval for $75.00/ per tape, but not put the charge through unless he did not return the tape(s).Agreement (via signature) to ALL our terms, including that we would charge him ALL back rental fees AND $75.00 per tape if we could not get them to return the tapes. He gave the DOORMAN’s number in violation of the agreement. (Something he knew by heart, so he probably used this number on a regular basis.)I did NOT stalk him at home, I came by the building that was close to talk to the Doorman to ensure he had passed on the messages. He was getting out of a cab and I was very respectful, even when he got abusive.AFTER he came in, he ASSAULTED my assistant manager, hitting her in the face and chest with the tapes, including the porn he supposedly did not rent. He then got in her face leaning across the counter, abusing her. When Charles, the record department manager intervened, he stomped up and down the aisles yelling and screaming (Charles was 6′3″ and a gym rate wearing a tight t-shirt, so I guess getting directly in HIS face was not an option). While stomping up and down the aisles, Charles yelling at him to leave, he grabbed random records and tapes and throwing them across the room (I watched the security tapes and he ALWAYS made sure there was no one in the line of fire, so, he WAS in control). And at the end, perhaps knowing this, he DID NOT contest the charges, knowing how immature and STUPID he had been. Conclusion, he was guilty of battery, criminal trespass, menacing, and destruction of private property and I could have had him charged and provided the security footage (VHS-lol) to the cops and media. But…I got my money and tapes back. (I could have even proved his lie by providing the Porn tape with his finger prints on it.)And, as for why I wanted THESE tapes back?!?. We had a limited number of Betamax tapes and a hard core group of customers that rented and bought them and appreciated our selection. The owner would only buy 1–2 new releases in Betamax per location and not replace older tapes even if we charged the customer for not returning them. Because I took care of the Betamax customers, whenever my boss bought used tapes in bulk from closed down stores, I got first dibs on the Betamax.
