PDF Editor FAQ

What is it like to attend a university in Denver or near by Denver, compared to other universities in America?

I attended Graduate School at the University of Denver (DU) and highly recommend the educational experience. Sometimes referred as the Harvard of the West, the faculty, student body, and campus lifestyle is the best of the best residing in the south east Denver area. However, DU is expensive because it’s private and rent can be high near campus. Downtown Denver has a master planned campus that includes three colleges the University of Colorado (CU) Denver extension, Metropolitan State University, and Community College of Colorado Denver each of the three offer more affordable tuition expenses. Denver’s award winning “Light Rail” train system provides access to both college campuses with special student discounts. Regis University is another private college on the north side of Denver with it’s claim to fame for having the Jesuit higher education reputation. CU Boulder is 50 minutes north west of Denver, Colorado State University is 90 minutes north of Denver, Western State in Gunnison is 4 hours, and Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction is 3.5 hours. Focus on your degree and affordability, Colorado is more affordable than many east/west coast colleges if you obtain residency. The bonus is you receive great weather with a wide range of mountain outdoor activities.

What are the best reasons to attend the University of Colorado Denver?

It’s a great school with downtown Denver as its campus. It shares a campus with Metropolitan State College and Community College of Denver. It’s also a 30 minute bus ride to the Boulder Campus if you need to do additional research.

What is it like to live in Colorado?

Colorado is the best state in the Union. You get a little bit of all the other cultures throughout the United States. It's becoming even more diverse as residents from other states have began to flock here. The epicenter of where all the action takes place is the Denver Metropolitan Area. The area consists of Denver, Jefferson…well really too many large counties to remember. To the west of Denver, the suburbs climb the foothills of the Rockies until you hit Evergreen where they grow. When you hit Idaho Springs, 15–20 minutes from downtown you are officially in Sasquatch country.I personally grew up in Golden, Colorado. My house was literally the last one on the foothill before Jefferson County Open Space, and Apex bike and nature trail wind their way up a beautiful foothill….not any ordinary foothill you'd see in the Midwest, more comparable to the skiing resorts outside of Chicago in Illinois. It was AMAZING having this undisturbed mountain as MINE. The only downside was the time a man was attacked and killed by an animal at the water tower halfway up the mountain. My home with the foothill behind it in view (top right corner)I have lived in Wheat Ridge and currently live in Lakewood. Golden and these two others all border each other and all are less than ten minutes from Denver, as Lakewood shares a border with Denver. Lakewood is around 150th most populated city in the United States. There are an endless amount of activities to do in Colorado. We have the healthiest residents in the United States thanks to the breathtaking environment and government recreational activities offered. If you aren't into hiking, rock climbing or similar types of activities, taking your dog for a walk will have you greeted with MANY Colorodans stopping, smiling and petting. Denver is also ranked first in dog loving. No joke, I was waiting for my friend to get us Pizza at this place off of Broadway and Pennsylvania (I think) as I watched her puppy outside. I got a phone number from a cute girl and my friends dog got worn out from all the attention he received. It's probably one of the easiest ways to meet people and get phone numbers.Denver doesn't have the tallest skyscrapers because during the building boom in the 1980’s there was a restriction on new building height due to Denver's proximity to Stapleton International Airport. Since 1995, Denver International Airport has operated as one of the busiest airports in the world, supplanting Stapleton and allowing the area to be redeveloped into a planned residential community in Commerce City. The buildings in Downtown Denver are by no means short or small, but if you are coming from Chicago or New York and used to the Sears Tower or the World Trade Center you will notice the difference easily. Also in 1995, Major League Baseball finally expanded into Denver with the Colorado Rockies. Playing downtown off of Blake Street, the Rockies have enjoyed a loyal fan base, breaking attendance records for total season attendence multiple times. However support has dropped lately, as our pitching has never been better than subpar….excuses are always made that the “air in Colorado is so thin that balls travel farther and our pitchers curveballs don't curve as well” etc. Even after the humidor was installed at Coors Field, to give the balls used during the game, moisture, the pitching is still terrible although slightly better. The Rockies and Nuggets share similar popularity. The favorite child of our great state is without doubt the Denver Broncos. The Colorado Avalanche also call Denver home. They won the Stanely Cup their first year after moving from Canada (HAHA!). So we are quite spoiled, especially for a city our size, as we enjoy the rare 4 major professional sports year round…..We also have the Colorado Rapids soccer team which I don't care about at all.The weather in Colorado is usually bareable, sometimes very dangerous and often just down right heaven. There are all four seasons in Colorado. In the metro area, spring starts later every year it seems. It snowed yesterday, was 70 degrees the day before and who knows what it will be like tomorrow. The weather changes at the drop of a hat. Yesterday it started raining as a down pour, first time this year, built up to thunderstorm as a cold front moved in. Today its beautifully sunny but only 47 degrees as the high. Word of caution when transporting yourself through the mountains. Watch out for deadly road conditions in the form of rock slides, flash floods and trecherous road conditions while snowing. It is the new Colorado residents that cause the majority of accidents during foul weather. So practice before you move here please. The government here is quite liberal and the population is currently democratic. Colorado will swing back and forth depending on the political climate. When I was a child the majority of Colorado's residents identified as Republican, but now have shifted to democrats with LOTS of support for welfare and government programs. Instead of continuing to fail by handing out insane sentences for drug and minor offenses, the judicial system appears as if truly tries to rehabilitate offenders instead of bending to the prison industrial complex seen elsewhere….Not to say we dont have prisons…..WE HAVE TONS OF THEM, some hold the most notorious and dangerous criminals such as Florence Supermax prison that has held high ranking Al qieda terrorists.Education is a large priority here as well. However as with every where else in the world, there's quite a difference between schools in different districts and even schools that are in the same city. For example, for middle school I attended D'evelyn JR/SR High School. It is the second best ranked public school in Colorado (although it's semi public as you have to win the name lottery or have a sibling who had attended to be accepted). I received an extremely high quality education while attending for 7th/8th grade. I talked my parents into letting me transfer to Green Mountain High School in Lakewood, Colorado for high school. The education offered there was noticeably of a different class of quality and I was offered meth in the bathroom my first week there. Still, it was a much better experience than if I had stayed at D'evelyn. College is also a high priority. Colorado University in Boulder is one of the top party schools in the nation in one of the most well known party towns in the USA. CSU is another quality university located a few minutes from Boulder. In the metro area you have the private school, Denver University which offers the best education in Colorado if you can afford it. In Aurora there's the Anshultz medical campus which is part of CU Denver. On Auraria campus in the heart of downtown, with the Pepsi center and elitches next door, there is Metropolitan State University, CU Denver and Denver Community College. I went to Metro and it was a pretty great education offered for cheap! In fact many of my classes were actually taught by CU professors with CU students mixed in. You get a nice discount on tuition if you've been a Colorado resident for at least a year.My brother graduating with his drs. in Pharmacology and CU Denver Anshutz (medical campus in Aurora)So there's a not so short summary on why Colorado is the best State in the United States. However it is not all rainbows and butterflies.Cons:Rent: I can't imagine being able to afford even a studio apartment if I was making minimim or near minimum wage. I'd have to live in Aurora which is just not an option for me. Ever since recreational marijuana has become legal rent has climbed an average of $400–500 from the apartments I have rented west of Denver.Opiod Epidemic: Has hit us particularly hard. While not as bad as a couple other states like West Virginia (or is it Virginia?), it is still absolutely scary. I need both hands to count off my friends who have died from a heroin overdose, including my own brother. One positive thing to take away from it is that there are non profit programs such as the Needle Exchange in downtown Denver where users can go to receive many needles, Cotton's, etc. (Whatever used to inject the black death) so addicts don't have to worry about contracting HIV, Hep C and the others from sharing a dirty, rusty syringe. Places like this also offer Narcan to reverse an overdose. If my brother had not been stipulated to be back in San Francisco, Narcan possibly would have saved his life. Drug addiction, particularly Heroin is bad in itself but the complications that arise from getting the next fix is what causes the most issues for our state society as a whole.Gangs: Gangs and gang violence is on the rise. Now that the cartel has moved in, I70 and Denver is a hotbed for one of the largest populations of cartel and their partner gangs. They have been ordered to assimilate and not break any serious laws but they're gang members, they are doing highly illegal stuff so cells are identified and neutralized from time to time. Other gangs are North Side Mafia, GKI, Bloods, Crypts and a white supremacist gang with it's origins from prison (cannot remember their name). Gang culture has always been around as the KKK had a massive presence here during its second iteration (of three) with ties to government officials inducing Stapleton in which the old airport was named. Violent crime is not climbing at an alarming rate but there still is incidents on occasion.Traffic: Ugh, I cannot stand seeing out of state license plates….GO BACK TO FLORIDA!! Traffic is becoming a total nightmare, the influx of so many expatriates from other states is creating an alarming rise in bumper to bumper traffic. Even as spectacularly managed road works programs like Trex program to extend I-25 throughout the tech center and Central Denver, construction cannot keep up and there is no more room to expand the highways and roads. The light rail system is stunning, but that too is still under construction in many key areas such as Arvada/Denver. The light rail also has too small of an area to cover the metro area successfully. They have finally finished the line to DIA which is nice but useless to me 360 days of the year. Especially when there's a special RTD bus (public transportation system) that goes directly to DIA anyway….Its not only congestion, the drivers that are not used to snow cannot drive in it AT ALL. The problem has gotten so bad that the last serious snow storm we had two separate news channels asked viewers who have never driven in the snow in Denver or have only been here less than a year to please stay home and drive in your first snow storm when the conditions aren't so terrible.Corruption/Brutality: I don't believe any large city is safe from corruption and brutality. My shining example is the brutality of a police officer who was caught on camera beating a bystander who had done nothing wrong at all. The corruption comes in when I factor in that the officer involved was aquitted and determined to not be at fault for his actions. The committee who decided if his actions were warranted was of course comprised of his fellow men in uniform inside the Denver police department. There's no accountability for those a-holes who let him off. Of course there are cities where the issues are much worse in instances of people being shot for being black. Luckily Colorado is not a very racist place, and while if we're being honest with ourselves there is always racial profiling and a disproportionate amount of minorities arrested and jailed compared to whites, it's probably one of the best places for minorities in the US. Very sad but true.So there it is, if you have any other questions I would be happy to answer them for you.
