PDF Editor FAQ

What are the similarities or differences of Thailand and the Philippines?

I am a Filipino and traveled to Thailand numerous times.Disclaimer:My views are solely as a visitor. I am not currently living in Thailand and with that, I cannot see more than a local there unlike in Indonesia which is where I currently live.SimilaritiesCommon Look (may it be the coutryside or the Thai Chinese, they look the same with Filipino and Chinoys (Chinese Pinoys). Well we came from the same regionWeather - Bangkok humidity can compete with Manila summer. Rainy monsoon is a problem but way more in Manila due to Typhoons. We get about 20 per year in Manila. Chiang Mai can be like our Baguio CityLove for Malls - Bangkok Siam CEN is like Makati CBD and Ortigas to Manila.. Malls are of high class. Siam Paragon can compete with the likes of Greenbelt and Rockwell in MakatiAlmost same food taste preference - when I say almost, you can omit the spicy for Filipinos but the love for Sour, Salty and Oily is the same. Both are mango lovers but I will debate that Philippine Mangoes are miles better than any in Southeast Asia (not bragging, but I tried the ones in Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia but nothing is sweeter than Guimaras mangoes)Transportation - we may lack on this department but Thailand has songthaews as Filipinos have Jeepney. Go figure. :) I love the BTS Skytrain, MRT and SRT of Thailand... I hope we catch up soon with our neighbors.TV Drama - I personally watch Thai Lakorns and it is like a better version of Filipino Teleserye. With better budget, HD, cinematography and length (one lakorn can finish max 3 months while Teleserye is minimum 6 months). Filipinos like our Teleseryes as how Thais watch their Lakorns and Cable dramas.Currency - Baht and Peso share the same denomination and almost the same value. (1:1.4). There is no adjustment in terms of money since it is almost the same. Unlike Rupiah which has 100,000 and VND of 500,000.DifferencesLanguage - one ask if Filipino is a tonal language, and it is NOT. It may sound Thai to others but no Thai is a whole new world. Filipino syntax and lexicon is one of the most difficult in Southeast Asia even we share the same letters with English. Thai on the other hand has their abugida system. We may sound the same due to the pitch but for Filipinos, we solely use it to intensify or elaborate while tone/pitch which is way higher in Thai is part of the language that you need to learn. (Learning Thai by the way and it is harder that Bahasa Indonesia/Malaysia)Religion - Filipinos are majority Catholic and Christian while Thailand is a majority Theravada Buddhist.General Attitude to Foreigners - due to the western upbringing (colonized by Spain for 333 years, Americans for 50+ years), Filipinos are more gregarious and friendly to foreigners (Which at times, backfires to us). We do speak English as we are raised to be ESL since Preschool. We do standout when with other nationalities. Not saying Thais are not, Thais are more reserve due to their Buddhist and more Asian upbringing and values. I really like that to their society, reserved. However, the western mix to the Filipinos actually is a double edged sword to the Filipino society. We are torn between “I do not care what they think, I will do what i want” attitude to “What would other people think?” attitude which is the Asian in us… Sounds not so great but this what makes Filipinos the nickname, Asian Latinos. (Many would dispute this,, haahahah). Again, no two country is better on this.Tourist Price - not only in Thailand but in Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia and Laos as well. Philippines does not have this. I do not have to pay 10x more than what local wants. Imagine going to the National Museum of the Philippines, which is free by the way, locals or tourist, while I went to Muzium Negara for a price 2x the local, Grand Palace for 500 Baht which is free for locals. I am not complaining but why there is always a tourist rate, can we have an ASEAN rate? just a suggestion. I paid 39 USD for Angkor Wat. In Borobodur charges 300k for Foreign and 40k for locals. Good thing I have a resident status in Indonesia. Boracay before closing down for island rehabilitation charges all the same ferry, terminal and environmental fee local or foreigners, I really understand this Tourist Price really helps the country. Just wanted to point that out. Our country is not that clean , we have scams as well. I hope this do not enrage anyone. That is all I can think of. Thanks :)
