PDF Editor FAQ

What are the placement opportunities in IIT Bombay's geoinformatics and natural resources engineering (GNR) department?

I'll provide an insight to all of you about the placement session 2019 for M.Tech in Geoinformatics- IIT Bombay (under Center of studies in resources engineering i.e. CSRE). Some of you might know Geoinformatics-IITB as CSRE (which is the center offering this course). To keep it short, the placement stats are fantabulous and you need not worry about it at IITB if you are dedicated. If you want the placement stats directly then please scroll below to that section because first I'll give a deeper insight to the course.UG Background: Students with B.tech background in CS, EE, EC, Agriculture (AG), Civil, B. Arch, Mining and M.sc in Physics, Geology and Mathematics can apply for this M.Tech course through their GATE score.Academic Curriculum: The curriculum of Geoinformatics in IIT Bombay is slightly better than the same course in other colleges of India. CSRE utilizes the potential of this interdisciplinary knowledge in a true sense. Many courses in the department are relevant to add value to your job applications while some of the courses are not directly value additives to your placements but can be taken up for research/learning purpose. The focus is on the following domains.Optical and Thermal Remote Sensing applications for various land use, land cover, change detection, mineral detection, geology and other related applications in atmospheric and agricultural studies. It is related to the use of remote sensing satellites, their physics, spectrum and the analysis of the data that is generated from them, mainly in the form of images. For e.g. Chandrayaan data, Mangalyaan data, LANDSAT satellite data etc. Even projects and courses related to spectroscopy of planetary material is covered. Modern machine learning methods are being used actively in this field and the department focuses on courses and projects related to Geo-spatial data mining and Neural Networks as well. This is one of the most important courses in Geoinformatics.Microwave Remote Sensing and it's applications and studies in the field of cryosphere (snow, ice and glacier studies), vegetation and hydrological applications. It is useful in various defense applications, surface studies and disaster management situations like earthquake and tsunami etc. It also deals with SAR (Synthetic aperture radar) and Digital elevation models. Students might find some amount of physics and electromagnetic theory involved over here but students from any UG branch can work in it. It is different from Optical Remote Sensing but the purpose is same. Generation of images from Microwave Remote Sensing Satellites and their analysis.Satellite image processing deals with the conventional methods in digital image processing like filtering, windowing and different transformations which are applied to satellite images obtained after remote sensing for their enhancement and information extraction. Few signal processing related algorithms like DFT, FFT are covered. Advanced course in image processing comprises of certain algorithms based on Machine Learning/Deep Learning techniques since Modern AI has made a lot of contribution to this field. Projects in this field can be taken up in Python/MATLAB. It is a very valuable course from placement perspective. Skills developed in this course can be applied to fields like Computer Vision applications.GPS and Photogrammetry group is something of relevance for Civil Students and they might do projects in this field. If you want to gain knowledge about the working of this technology, it's highly recommended that you take this course but it is not directly related to placements. It is a good learning opportunity though. Almost every professor in this branch is somehow working on satellite imaging including the GPS group. These are a few interesting courses which are run in the department and you can opt for them to gain knowledge in these fields. Just reinforcing the fact that the background doesn't matter. Even EE/EC/CS/Physics etc can opt for such courses to complete their department credits. When you are here you are a geoinformatics engineer and you should be open to everything.GIS and IoT: GIS (Geographic Information Systems) deals with the generation and analysis of geographic data sets and it is in demand for many defense applications, food delivery apps like swiggy, zomato, uber, ola, Google maps, ISRO maps, disaster management etc. The conventional concepts in GIS are related to topographic sheets, coordinate systems, scale of maps, raster and vector data but with the involvement of Computer Science principles, the course also covers some basics of databases and advanced projects in this field focus upon the integration of GIS with cloud and IoT based systems for real time applications. Some hands on experience with JavaScript and HTML can be beneficial to make the best out of this field. It can be self-learnt in case you want to take up such projects. Projects related to Client-Server applications for real time GIS, Microcontroller based Geospatial IoT systems, navigation apps and machine learning for GIS, high performance computing and Web GIS etc can be taken up by students in this course/group. It is a cross over of CS, EC/EE and Civil Engineering. It explores a lot of Computer Science aspects and students learn softwares like ArcGIS and QGIS.Courses related to studies of biosphere, agro information, geology, hydrosphere and atmospheric studies are also covered to give students a gist of the natural resources and their potential modelling. These courses don't add direct value to placements but are important to understand the role of remote sensing/geoinformatics in these fields. There are a lot of research opportunities in these fields though.Machine Learning and Deep Learning: This course has gained momentum in the past few years as it is trending in almost every field. It is run by CSRE and also by CS, EE and IEOR department. It is highly in demand and our department has found applications of this field widely in the domain of satellite imaging, Geospatial predictive modelling, integration with IoT systems and Computer Vision. The basic course structure is similar in all the departments but we mainly apply it on satellite images and the above mentioned domains. Though the same concepts can be applied in other fields as well. It forms a core pillar in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. Almost every student opts for this course. Some statistical and linear algebra knowledge alongwith Python Programming can help you to reap the best out of this field. Most of the job profiles seek student background in this course and if you excel in it then you can get ample of opportunities for yourself.Placements:Now coming to the long awaited discussion. The 2019 placements for Geoinformatics have been phenomenal with 100% statistics which was achieved within DAY 6 of the placements. In general for the past 5–6 years the placement stats have been above 90% but our immediate seniors did extremely well and we were able to maintain the same status of 100% placements this year as well. All the students in the past 2–3 years who had registered for the placements from our branch were able to bag offers from top recruiters around the globe. However it is important to note that individual efforts play the maximum role. If you do your projects properly and are confident about your CV preparation, then you can do wonders. You have to work on your coding skills to clear company tests. I assure everyone can learn to code even who haven't ever done it before. Subject knowledge must be clear esp ML, DL and Image Processing. We got offers in R&D, Data Science, Data Analysis, Business development, Core Remote Sensing, Software Development, Telecom, Finance, Consultants and IoT Systems. The average CTC for Domestic offers, 2019= 20.3 LPA INRThe average CTC for international offers, 2019 = 50 LPA in Yen I.e. (CTC~30–35 LPA INR in Japan). The major recruitments from this branch in 2019 were by Goldman Sachs, Sprinklr, Accenture, Walmart Labs, NEC Japan ,Hitachi Japan, HSBC, Rakuten Japan, Sysmex Corporation Japan, AWL labs, Micron Technologies, Honda Japan, Sony Japan, SOLV, Zensar Labs, XPO Logistics.Even our seniors achieved 100% placements and some additional companies which can be targetted are Qualcomm (AI engineer), Intel (Software), KPMG, Flipkart, Deloitte, Axis Bank (Business Development Roles), Citi Bank, Honeywell, MathWorks, Yahoo Japan, Archeron Group (core remote sensing company), Mercedes Benz (for computer vision and Deep Learning), John Deere, Cybertech (GIS and software), Boeing (Data Analytics) etc. There are more than 100 different job applications in which students from this branch can apply. Placement doesn't happen on its own but if you are preparing in a planned manner then you can crack it very easily because there are a lot of opportunities. You can also opt for reasearch/PhD in this field in the above mentioned domains. There are a lot of interesting projects going on.Few of our seniors also bagged offers in MIcrowave Remote sensing domain at very good packages but it was off campus.Even the job roles in big giants like Google, Microsoft, Swiggy, etc. are open for the students of this department to apply. But you need to have the potential to crack their written test and interview to get those roles. You will be competing with CS and EE department students of IITB for such profiles. If you can match that calibre by utilising your time judicially, then you can definitely crack that as well. It is difficult but not impossible. These have been our latest recruiters for last 2–3 years. The average CTC for the past 3–4 years had been greater than 10–12 LPA for domestic offers with 2018 and 2019 batches taking it even higher to an average of 16–17 LPA.If you focus well on your projects, coding skills and resume then placements won't be an issue. I'd suggest if you join Geoinformatics then start working on Python since first semester. It will be useful in department projects as well as placements. Since majority companies which recruit for data science/data analytics are asking for these skills and luckily the branch deals with all of it.If your focus is towards software profiles like those similar to that of Google, Microsoft, Uber etc. then give time on C++/Java programming skills, DBMS and Operating System as well apart from your course subjects. Data Structures at any point are very important for such roles and you must be thorough with that. This will require extra effort on your part since these things are not covered in our branch. Either rely on your UG knowledge, good reference books, institute elective courses from other departments or YouTube.Students from CS background in Geoinformatics might fit in any kind of roles they want if they prepare properly. Electrical/electronics can also prepare for their core engineering roles by taking institute elective courses but it is really difficult to make a core hardware profile alongwith your current specialization. IoT and ML will be a good option for them. And for all the other branch students (including CS and EC/EE students if they are not interested for the above mentioned roles) joining over here, Core Remote sensing, Image Processing, Computer Vision, GIS, Data Science, Machine Learning, AI , Data Analytics and Business Development roles are the best. It is in demand and the department courses prepare you in that way. While preparing for these roles, do focus on your Python and Machine Learning skills. Most of the companies have written tests including aptitude, coding, statistics and machine learning while many overseas firms shortlist on the basis of UG background, SOP and Resume. Resume becomes stronger with better projects and better CPI.You have to make sure that you choose a line of your choice before appearing for the placements.Data science? Data analytics? Software? Business Development? R&D in Machine Learning/Deep Learning? Core Remote sensing? GIS? Image Processing? IoT? Consultant?Maybe some of the courses in our department might not be relevant for all these roles but you can always shape your profile by opting for relevant Institute Elective Courses which are offered.I hope I was able to clarify your doubts. Placements are really good over here and you need not worry if you stay focused. I just want to add a fact that Geoinformatics is really an exciting field to work in. You can go for core Remote sensing firms if you get an option or in future try to work for ISRO, NASA, ESA etc. If not, then you will gain good knowledge in various trending fields from the course curriculum which can be applied to many private firm applications as well.Thank you.
