Michael,You’re currently more suited to be an Analyst who programs. If you haven’t built your own small end-to-end application, you won’t be allowed to build a big one for someone else. Take an Analyst job that includes a high ratio of programming tasks, not just any analyst job. Then, when you can develop (pun intended) true engineering skills, switch jobs. Being an Analyst with programming powers is more fun that being a dev anyway. More discovery. Less build-to-spec.—-I’m reminded of my own start since I also majored in Math. You also reminded me of a time when I had little to put on my own resume. Comments are nice, but responses here can be like opening code documentation, when all you want is an example! I’ve redone your resume, in just about the exact same format as the resume that I used to get my current job. Some were to short, so I left questions marks in there for you to fill in, just incase that information can be generalized to other work. For example, “Generated reports” using what? It’s great practice to use number to quantify things, but I skipped over that.Reorganizing the lines so that the ends cascade is a nice aesthetic. Descending or ascending doesn’t matter, as long as you pick one.No GPA. Anything that isn’t 3.9 or more is useless to list. 3.3/4 = 82.5 … and now you don’t seem so smart. Program as much as possible to never ever use VBA again, and never do mathematical modeling in Excel. Python is stronger, Tableau visualizes data better, and Excel isn’t a database. However, avoid “Business Analyst”. Notice how the word Intelligence is left out. Lol. Jobs like this will mention “requirements gathering” in the responsibilities. That’s opposite the direction you want to go. You document processes, and projects across departments. Very far from what you want to do. Don’t rely on title, but read well into the description to discern how much use of programming/scripting they are looking for.If you don’t let recruiters or employers de-value you based on your age, you’d be worth 60k–70k in parts of California, today. People with less math ability and less programming knowledge make that or more, and they only use some combo of MS Excel, MS SQL and Tableau (or equivalents thereof). Not sure how that salary translates to NY/NYC. If you have the option, money, or if you can do a GoFundMe; leave NYC behind and find a better place to live and work =). It’s extremely competitive, and extremely expensive. There are better places to get a start. You’re smart and can do your own research on that.What you want tends to exist already.
