At first, I only had a suspicion mom suffered a lot while she lived in the nursing home, but it dawned on me how intensified her suffering was, especially the last few days of her life; but poor thing she was incapable of telling us of her tribulations as she was not mentally aware of her situation.The problem was I did not know mom was so sick that she blacked out on several occasions the previous month before her passing because I visited her once a week and was not informed of this shortcoming. So my husband and I came to visit her as usual, unknowing about mom´s condition, when we found her unconscious, so we could not come in contact with her. I became so shocked and afraid she was dying or worse, that I immediately rang the night doctor. We waited a whole hour but the doctor did not arrive; then I rang again to tell the doctor it was an emergency but another hour passed and no doctor came.It went on like this for several times, until I came in contact with the doctor whereupon she told me she rang the nursing home but was informed by the nursing assistant that mom was not in an emergency state. Anyway, after three hours the doctor from Jelling (name of the town) finally came, and found mom unconscious. Still, the doctor believed the nursing assistant and did not do her duty to request an ambulance right away but delayed the ambulance to which I had to ring many times before one was sent to mom´s acute rescue. Then I understood what was really going on here, it seemed the doctor was more inclined to believe the nursing assistant rather than was willing to recognize mom´s critical condition to summon the ambulance promptly.We understood mom was in this condition the previous day and the day we came to visit her, yet we were not informed or was a doctor summoned. I get this feeling the assistants in charge of her care, neglected her leaving her on her own because they had already given her up for dying. So they chose not to do anything, until we arrived and interrupted the plans. They simply could have told us to move mom away from that place, and we would gladly have done so, instead of subjecting her to this shitty treatment. Had we not come that day, mom would have gone and we would not have suspected foul play, we would have thought mom passed away naturally.However, the ambulance arrived and the paramedics were shocked to see mom in this lifeless condition and told us mom was in a bad state. I started to cry right away, I could not believe what was happening and why. They then asked the assistants for mom´s readings of her pressure etc. but the assistants did not have any information at all about mom´s condition seeing they had already given mom up for whatever reason they preferred, so the paramedics had to do all the leg work in order to help mom, but it was of no use they told us, they had to rush mom to the hospital with the emergency siren and we drove after.I was devastated that we put our trust in the nursing home, Sommersted Plejehjem to look after my mom and this was the outcome. Then I sent a complaint to the Disciplinary Board. But I was in for a bigger shock when I received mom´s case files and read about the horror that befell her; along with the Board´s decision two years later.Mom had suffered in her lifetime but this cruelty etc. she experienced in the home, along with the barbaric methods used to coerce her into rehab, was far more overwhelming than what mom would have expected to receive in a nursing home or what mom had endured in her eighty four years. Worse, she could not confide in us because of her fading memory lapse and mental abuse. Everyone who was in charge of mom´s care and welfare had let her down and betrayed her.Mom departed a broken person and her soul still needs peace, seeing the Disciplinary Board ignored her ordeal, whereas they believed her oppressors whose untrue claims are more powerful and influential than mom´s inexplicable treatment from the home; not to mention the leader of the home altered the facts in her files and fabricate her own evidence.Is it fair, that the leader of the home as well as the ergotherapist, who denied mom aid, have all documents at their disposal which they can change at their fancy and hold back those they mean we must not see/ have? This is what happened in mom´s case and the Board did not demand the rest of her files, less work for them maybe?Honestly, just observing the way the Board treated, examined and reached their decision in the case, I think the Board is incompetent to judge in these kind of cases because they do not see the ordinary person as an equal to the complainees; on the contrary the Board look down on the elderly etc. and are more willing to believe their peers. If the Board is not prejudiced against the ordinary complainant, then why else would they defend the perpetrators and overlook the fabrication/ tampering of evidence, when mom´s files speak volumes?However, we got the verdict from the hospital. Mom was undernourished, dehydrated, had medicine poisoning, diarrhea, lung- bladder- womb infection which was the cause of her demise. Her worst diagnosis was the harassment of more exercise and exertion than her frail body could withstand. With other words she got more exercise than was necessary because the leader of the home decided rehabilitation for mom was her only option, as budget cuts were necessary whilst mom was coerced into using some large machines to walk with, which added up, cost much more. Yes, I know it does not make sense at all. The Board also ignored the hospital´s diagnosis of mom´s terrible conditions, diseases and injuries.Yet the authorities with all their experts and professionals ignored mom´s sufferings, pain etc. for the defense of the people who had hurt her. I remembered when I came to see her in the hospital the way she looked at me with those sad eyes, hopelessly and silently pleading for me to remove her from that hell but I could not read into her afflictions; only now am I aware of her desperate cry for help after reading her files, feeling hopelessly lost that I had failed her.Oh God, forgive me and bring me peace of mind. Help me to understand why your creation can hurt an old, defenseless lady and get away with their crimes, as well as the people You put to be judges, have turned their backs on mom´s redemption and let her persecutors go free. Don´t they have mothers? How would they react if their mothers were treated the way mom was? The funny thing is, you cannot feign empathy or sympathy, these qualities you must be born with. Mother or not, these qualities are what make us human, and without them what are we then?The above mentioned incident, where mom blacked out, happened in April. Mom was unconscious because she was plagued with the above mentioned diagnosis from the hospital and which caused her great pain and discomfort. When we arrived at the home the smell of her womb infection was so intense, it hit us as soon as we came into the room where this green pus and slime were running out of mom. Oh, it was a horrible experience, I was so confused I was going out of mind, while at the same time I was busy trying to get hold of the doctor.The assistants, who remained controllably calm did nothing, they just stood there and looked on whilst I was fighting to save my poor mom´s life as well as to get immediate help for the extreme pain in her stomach and the slime running out of her womb. She was also suffering from diarrhea and bladder infection which I was unaware of, until I read her files. You see, I can hardly blame these unsympathetic assistants, because they are so used to seeing the elderly suffer, such extreme incident do not affect them anymore.Besides, they are trained and controlled by an unsympathetic leader who had no scruples penalizing mom, so not surprisingly her staff performs accordingly. Anyway, mom stayed in the hospital for about three weeks, until she was discharged. They drained two times 200, 300 mg pus from her womb and got her diarrhea in check. Mom´s diet was improved and she drank amply. She was feeling fine and recuperating slowly but was alive and well. Mom went through uncountable tests and examinations which were very painful and tedious in her weak and fragile condition. Anyway, mom returned to the home at the end of April. Still a bit weak and frail, mom was lent a wheelchair by the hospital. The home did not provide one for mom even though the hospital recommended a wheelchair.The ergotherapist in charge of the elderly aid in nursing homes failed mom, because she denied meeting with mom to assess mom´s need, by cancelling all her appointments with mom the eight months mom lived in the home. Then when I complained about her irresponsible behavior and neglect, she fabricated false notes which she sent to the Disciplinary Board that she had supposedly visited mom, as was her duty in the first place, whereupon the Board believed her. I know these false notes do not exist because they are not found in mom´s files.Don´t you think such important meetings would have been recorded in the files if they happen? The Board never responded to my pointing out this inconsistency to them or even responded to the dates the ergotherapist supposedly visited the home, even though the Board claimed they examined the case from the files.The worse is, the ergotherapist did not sign the false note, but instead she just wrote Visitation (a branch within the healthcare) at the top. When I tried to point this out also to the Board, they chose not to comment or even to check the files. Who cares enough to ask questions, or like the Board who would believe such things happen? But one thing is certain, the employees of municipality can never lose a case if this is the way they usually operate; if manufacturing evidence is their winning cards, the complainant does not stand a chance to be heard. This is my loss, unfortunately. What a waste, all the time, hope and energy I put into getting justice for the horrible things that happened to mom? I just wonder how these forgers have not been caught in the act as yet! Well, power talks as usual. Who will bell the cat?I know, if you happen to be reading this narrative, the morbid descriptions of events and accounts may seem unlikely, but I promise this is the whole truth which I am relating from the few censored documents we receive concerning mom´s case. When I think about the suffering and misery mom endured by the hands of the leader etc. of the home as well as the other authorities which allowed fabrication of evidence plus the Board who denied investigating these false claims but believed them instead, words cannot express how stupefied I feel. Even more devastating is, who will believe such crimes can be committed in a nursing home, where the authorities in charge, are involved and choose to turn a blind eye and approve such disgusting behavior.Anyway, mom had other issues we did not know about according to her files. There was an assistant who intimidated and victimized mom because she did not like mom. Before mom was admitted to the hospital she had suffered severe injuries because she fell uncountable times with the big apparatuses the assistants of the home forced mom to try out, one experiment after the other whilst mom weak and helpless could not cope with these. The worst case scenario was mom´s denture which fastened in her throat several times caused by the same assistant who disliked mom, yet her denture was not removed from her permanently, neither were we informed of this catastrophe so we could do the assistants´ job, removing the denture.The strange thing is, the Board also condoned this behavior of the assistant, in their decision, trying to twist the truth around that a dentist visited mom when she moved into the home, and to which there is no proof again of this. But what the Board is trying to do here is both, missing the point and choosing to camouflage what the problem really is here; mom´s denture fastened in her throat many months after this supposed visit of a dentist who has nothing to do with her denture fastening in her throat. Even if there were a dentist, his recommendation was to remove the denture altogether which was not done and which the Board choose to overlook. Besides, if a dentist visited mom, we would have been informed, because it costs much for a dentist visit.The Disciplinary Board´s action in judging this case, only exemplify their frivolousness of the truth as well as considering the complainant to be a fool. But I am fully aware of the warped way in which the Board has come to their decision and how prejudiced they are to willingly manipulate with the facts to make the complainees look innocent; similarly to justify their decision which again has to look good on paper.When mom could not eat/ swallow quickly enough, the assistant simply forced the food into mom´s mouth, so her denture was being shoved down her throat. Today I can just imagine mom´s horror and apprehension which are so devastating to cope with, I feel like confronting this assistant, but this is supposed to be the Disciplinary Board´s duty. Even though this occurrence with her denture happened many times, the assistant was not removed from mom´s care.This same assistant injured mom whilst putting mom´s clothes on, because mom could not lift her hand to help, so the assistant became mad at mom causing a big cut on mom´s hand. Another assistant recorded the incident. Many times over, this assistant had treated mom cruelly where mom got hurt whilst the staff looked the other way. Oh God, it is so unsettling to absorb these horrors. In the meantime the leader of the home and the assistant in charge of mom did absolutely nothing, they knew about the incidents, seeing another assistant reported these.Ultimately, I am inclined to believe, mom was not the first to suffer at the hands of these inhumane creatures, and neither is she the last. People simply do not care enough to investigate their elderly family stay in the home, even if they become suspicious that their family is not striving or does not have a proper life in the home. I am certainly not the only person who is aware of the cruelty and antipathy of an assistant towards an elderly resident, but cases like mom´s you do not read about and this is sad, because others cannot learn from another´s experience. Had I known about such atrocity happening in a home, especially like what mom had experienced from the assistant who disliked her, I would have thought twice before putting mom in this home.Anyway, this assistant further invented a false story that mom supposedly had told her about mom walking up stairs, trying to imply mom was feigning her helplessness etc. How can an assistant slander an old, defenseless resident in a home, hurt her, and the home as well as Disciplinary Board could condone such behavior? Is this acceptable or even merciful? What is wrong with these heartless entities? It is one thing committing a crime but accepting and approving the crime is another, as the authorities who were supposed to protect mom, did.Mom stopped communicating with people a long time ago and this hit home hard for us, as mom, once used to talk a lot. She had lost her verbal cognitive ability, the reason some of the assistants took advantage of her silence when they punish her, because mom was incapable of telling us about her tribulations. Therefore it is difficult for me to understand how mom could have told this assistant she walked up stairs. Mom did not have the ability to walk from A to B, the reason we put her into the nursing home in the first place, much less walk up stairs. Mom also fell countless of times where she was hurt before coming to the home, the reason that reinforced our decision.Mom had nine kids in nine years, one every year, maybe the reason she had always had problems with her legs and hips which were worn out; her legs shook when she walked, after all mom was eighty five. So this assistant lied on an old lady and got away with all her crimes towards mom.Just to mention how biased the Disciplinary Board is, the ergotherapist, whom I complained about, even used this false story in her defense and the Board believed and accepted it as authentic. Everyone treated mom with disdain and contempt, as if mom was not a human being with any value. So it is crystal clear that the Disciplinary Board does not care what had happened to her. What worse than mom´s horrendous treatment does a resident in a home have to endure before the Board can see eye to eye with the resident´s suffering and misery in order for these seven people to be impartial and objective in their examination and decision of the facts in the case?You see, when a leader disrespect a resident, hence treat her indifferently and with contempt, it is obvious the other staff that is weak, easily influenced and merciless would follow suit, as was in mom´s case. The leader disliked mom for some reason, coerced her into doing her bidding, so when mom was not taken kindly by the other assistants, the leader overlooked this inhumane act.Then there is no supervision in the home, there is no one to protect or represent the resident, no one to speak up when the resident is victimized or intimidated, her lack, or sick etc. No wonder this reckless behavior in the home is common, accepted and allowed to continue, seeing no one is put to blame, just as the resident is unprotected and exposed to harm.Therefore the authorities and professionals, the more, the merrier all have to be involved in a case against them just to sidetrack their responsibility; simultaneously dodging the issue and justifying the employees´ neglect and errors. Winning at all cost is their only mantra. Don´t you think they all know what had befallen mom, but it is far easier for them to deny the facts of mom´s dilemma and the fatal disease that sent her to her grave. They have to pretend that none of these atrocities towards mom had happened in order to satisfy their conscience, indifferent of course, to our suffering and grief. Poor souls, we all have to get old one day; what you sow, is what you will reap.The leader who knew what was happening to mom did nothing to help; neither did the assistant in charge of mom. They all turned a blind eye to mom´s distress and discomfort, they even encouraged mom´s nightmare. All these cuts and injuries, unhealed and infected, mom went to her grave with. Also the horrible incidents that befell mom were kept from us or else we would have removed mom from her hell right away. The leader as well as the staff was really good at hiding their offences. In fact, real criminals would be envious.Anyway, after mom returned to the home, the same déjà-vu began afresh. No one took pity on mom or treated her kindly. The rough treatment and cruelty continued as if mom had not just come out of the hospital, still ailing and feeble. Similarly when we were not present, mom´s fate hang in the balance but when we were there visiting, another scenario emerged. Therefore we could not see through this deception which some of the assistants were really professional at, except for their job.These people at Sommersted Plejehjem have to be exposed for their evil, if it is the last thing on earth I do, before I die. The only reason why the nursing home has gotten away with its crime so far, it is because the Disciplinary Board along with all the other authorities, the Haderslev Kommune (municipality) are on the home´s side, whilst the leader has all the documents she can manipulate with, and nothing will change unless one takes the initiative to dodge/ beat the odds and proclaim this well hidden secret on the housetop. But then again, who´s interested, seeing old people have no value here in this country where very few want to hear about them, just as very few are concerned about their safety, protection, care and wellbeing once they are put in a home.However, as mentioned above mom returned to the home about the end of April. The exact circumstances that befell her after she returned to the home were kept from us by the leader who added her own notes that did not exist in mom´s files, but a few notes escaped the home. Just few days after returning from the hospital mom´s torment continued where the cruelty by some of the assistants simply became worse than before she was hospitalized. It looked like mom was unwelcome back at the home and the unkind behavior of the employees reinforced mom´s will to depart. All they had to do was tell us to move mom away from her hell and, you bet I would have done so. But, on the other hand there are people who have to satisfy their sadistic urges and can be found anywhere.Some assistants were even reluctant to care for mom now that she was totally dependent on them; worse, mom was sitting in a wheelchair, which a few disapproved, especially the leader of the home as well as the assistant in charge of mom; these two together had misjudged mom´s weak and helpless condition by coercing her into rehab which is now overturned by the hospital.The Board however, chose to turn a blind eye and disbelieved the report from the hospital. They have not even mentioned it, just as every other important aspect of this case. Just to be straight, if ever there was an injustice done to an innocent person, so is it done here to my mom by the Disciplinary Board. I wonder how these seven people sleep at night. The Board further, overlooked mom´s sufferings, injuries and sicknesses, one of which was the reason for mom´s departure; they defended/ freed her perpetrators, they manipulate with the facts some of which they refuse to see or answer to and accepted false claims. Most of all they overlooked the fabrication/ tampering of evidence. Mom´s whole ordeal seems like a fictional story to them.Anyway, unfortunately for mom she still had some of her wits, as she was not gone as yet and she could read body language, especially of cruelty and aversion on the faces of some of the assistants who showed/ acted their true colors. Their actions towards mom spoke louder than words. All in all, mom was no fool. Even animals can recognize when you are unkind to them and they shy away from you.Anyhow, mom could take no more of it. For her it was better to depart from this world with some dignity left, rather than live with evildoers and inhumanity. Actually, mom was always a soft and kindhearted person, amiable; therefore she was unable to cope with such callousness and humiliation from these strangers. Strangers who neglected her, so much so, she was plagued with many diseases that also aided her quicker to her grave.I remember how mom used to retaliate when we tried to bully her, she would be adamant and stood her ground but with love and care; now these people had reduced mom to nothing where mom could not fight back but given up, wishing/ willing to die. She simply had no more will or fight left in her, both physically and mentally. All this time, none of us knew what was going on. Our naivety that the home was safe had given backlash. Something was definitely wrong with our mental state that we could not see our mom suffering in agony and pain; just as something seemed to be sickeningly wrong with these barbarians. Only after mom´s demise and reading her files, did we become aware of her trials and tribulations, diseases etc. and it hurts terribly today.If only walls could speak, they would scream out the terror and horror that have befallen the elderly in Sommersted Plejecentre. By now mom had five excruciating days to suffer before leaving this world in her anguish and affliction. Mom stopped eating and drinking because she could not swallow, her throat was damaged. When fed she kept the food longer in her mouth than necessary as she could not swallow. Well, unknowing of mom´s painful condition, I also urged her to eat and drink, but she could not even open her mouth; today I can just imagine how agonizing this was. Moreover, there are notes which record these occurrences.Whatever, we were not given all the notes of her end. But a nurse came and found mom again unconscious where mom was admitted again to the hospital. The assistant whom I mentioned above hated mom, forced food into mom´s throat again on the 3rd of May and her denture fastened once again in mom´s throat, this time it went further down her throat where several assistants had to try to get it out. Mom´s throat was cut away and bleeding, so she could neither eat nor drink anything in days. When mom came to the hospital, unfortunately they gave her up, because they were unable to help her anymore. The only option was to feed her through tubes which were very unpleasant with a wounded throat. But I declined.Once again we returned mom back to the home, more like her hell, still in ignorance that all these evil things had been happening to mom, and we did not suspect anything. Not one of the assistants told us what mom was going through. They are well trained, but they would not escape God´s judgment or His vengeance. Mom passed away in starvation as she had with her pain, sicknesses, infected cuts and injuries etc.; most of all with a broken heart and body.Even though I was there and saw her life ebbing away, I was still shocked when she departed. I could not believe she was suddenly gone. Even then I did not know about the nightmare she had lived through, where she could not confide in me. So it is tough to live with this revelation of knowing what I know now. But not getting the option to remove her from her damnation instead of returning her to hell, makes it even harder to cope with the grief of losing her.They say, “The truth will set you free”, but this truth, which is very strange, tragic and enigmatic about mom´s horror, has bound me to my grave. However, I hope mom´s soul finds peace, even though her oppressors have walked free whilst the Disciplinary Board ´s project is skillfully executed. Once again the Board´s successful mission is accomplished the way it usually does. The authorities should be more than grateful for and thankful to the Board. There is always the next case until the authorities´ luck run out. Democracy cannot always win, no matter the odds (a whole system against one person).
