So a computer science degree, in and of itself, is very much a net positive for the strength of someone’s candidacy - and probably never more so than today.And yet, there aren’t really all that many computer science graduates working in investment banking jobs. Sure, there are plenty of them working in various roles across Wall Street, but not so many working specially as investment banking analysts (e.g., on M&A teams etc).So why is that? The first reason is that not all that many computer science majors gravitate towards the role of investment banking analyst. Proportionally, there are many more finance and economics majors interested in investment banking careers. So, since computer science graduates make up a comparatively small slice of the applicant pool it’s natural enough that they also make up a relatively small slice of the pool of hires.Secondly, to be a competitive candidate for an investment banking analyst program you need to have a demonstrated interest in finance - in understanding companies, how they’re valued, how they make money, how they fit into the industry space that they occupy and so on. Competitive candidates for investment banking usually have a variety of resume markers that show those interests - student investment clubs, stock pitch competitions, personal investment accounts. In general, not many computer science majors have those interests.But if you’re a high performing computer science major with a strong interest in the things I noted above, there will be no shortage of leading investment banking firms interested in talking to you.
