A2A. As far as I’m aware, you have a right to all your medical records under HIPAA. There are a few hoops you have to jump through. You need to submit a written request for your medical records. Depending on the facility, you may need to fill out a form authorizing the facility to release the records to you or your proxy. This is all because the unauthorized release of medical records is a serious offense that can result in massive fines.On a personal note, I have been involved in the release of medical records exactly twice. Eventually she obtained the records directly from the hospital, and that case was thrown out of court. Again, nothing happened to that patient who wrongfully accused me.

I am assuming you are over 18 years old since you have an IUD. However, whether you are or not, why is your Mom asking you to sign a release? It is my understanding that if you are under the age of 18, you legal guardian does not need your permission to access your medical records unless they are related to a substance use disorder or contraception. SO, sounds like your Mom wants to get in your business about one of those things. Ask her why she needs you to sign the ROÍ, and if you don’t like her answer, refuse to sign. You have that right! It might be a good idea to talk with your pediatrician about it and ask that she keep it confidential. Also, call PP and ask them what your rights are and tell your Mom to mind her business!
