What do students regularly do that makes professors scratch their head?

In an intro CJ class I taught, I had an extra credit question on the first exam: for one point each, give the first and last names of the members of the United States Supreme Court. Not one student provided even one name. On the next exam, I asked exactly the same extra credit question. Two students provided one (only last) name each, probably because I had mentioned that justice in class a week or so before. On the third exam, I asked the same extra credit question, and got the same answers as before, from the same people. When we were coming up on the final, I mentioned that a lot of them could really help themselves out a lot by learning who was on the Supreme Court. After all, anyone who got all nine names could raise their grade almost one full letter.Final exam time. Three or four people provided a couple of first and last names, not all of them correct. I asked a couple of students why they hadn’t bothered to learn the names. The replies were all versions of “I didn’t want to learn all those names if I wasn’t sure you would have them on the test.” Apparently, it was just too much to ask that someone learn some information that wasn’t absolutely required for the course.Another issue was not that students would plagiarize written assignments, but rather that they would do it with such a lack of finesse. I got one that had British-type spellings (“colour,” “defence,” etc.) and some big words I was pretty sure were not in the student’s vocabulary. It took me maybe two minutes to find the source, an Australian academic website. When I confronted him, he told me that he read that on the website, and therefore he knew the material and could submit it as his own. That he couldn’t define several of the words was irrelevant to him. He was quite upset a few weeks later when his basketball coach called me to ask how he was doing in my class. He was scheduled to play in a tournament that weekend, and if he wasn’t passing his classes, he wasn’t eligible. I told him that it was mathematically impossible for him to pass the class at that point, due to low test scores and mostly missing writing assignments. The student told me afterward, “The only reason I’m here is to play basketball, and you’re keeping me from doing that.” I tried to explain to him that he was unclear on the concept of what college was about.

What was banned in your school and why?

Q: “What was banned at your school and why?”Me.Me as an adult.Maybe it was when they published 6 reasons why they needed a new high school. I researched the issue by talking with kids and school staff, and I published a story in a local newspaper that said why all six of these reasons were wrong. They got the local newspaper shut down. I also sent in a letter to the large regional newspaper in the area 8 weeks early so they would have plenty of time to publish it well before an upcoming election and the vote on the new school funding. I followed up in 2 weeks and they did nothing. They published it the day after the election. Letters to the editor about my article said that they would not have voted for the new high school if they had known the truth I had written. The school got their new high school building. All six of my reasons came true.I told them they should use something called “liquidated damages” in their contract, and if they did not use it, they would not be able to control the construction schedule and the new school would not be open in Sept of that year. It was behind schedule in Sept, and it opened a year late. The next year the roof fell in when it snowed. They had not connected the roof beams to columns in the side walls. I finally found out the secret reason for the new school. They had lost their qualification from the state to conduct the Regional Basket Ball Tournament. When they got the new 10 million dollar school built they could now hold these state level tournaments. Another Professional Engineer was favorable to the school and told me, “We need a new high-school, NOT better standards.” His athletic son graduated and went away to college, and came home within a year, a drop-out.Maybe it was when I gave the local school board a chart based on a NAEP quote from 1993 that said, “In America 50% of math students drop out of math each year, and by graduation only 5% are at grade level.” The chart I gave them showed the NAEP information, but I asked them to publish to the local community how our kids were doing, and for them to publish it on that format. They refused to provide the information at all. I have not been able to find that quote on the web for years. I think a few other public school people in America were not happy with it either.Maybe it was when I gave our local school a list of 10 standards from industry that I had written for a nearby school’s School To Work (STW) Program and had gotten their approval and funding for. Our local school does not teach a course for students on how to study. My standards would have required our local to school teach study skills and correctly define what a student is so students can use study skills to be successful in school, college and work. Why? It could have been a lot of things.Leon
