PDF Editor FAQ
Are nuclear power plants safe?
Let me put it this way:People bicker of the exactness of data suggesting that nuclear power kills fewer people per terrawatt-hour versus Solar and Wind. That should be rather telling; if you can even have that argument, its gotta be pretty freaking safe when most people’s first question is “How in the world can it be safer than solar or wind?”The answer is “Regulation.” Politicians don’t think to regulate solar or wind specifically, so it doesn’t really get regulated beyond what laws were already in place. As a result, you experience occasional fires, fall, mutilations, hazards, et cetera. Nothing super concerning (except the industries don’t know how much waste they are producing because no one bothers to record it!). Now, solar and wind are safe! They’re also relatively cheap (due to lessened regulation - not that they need as much regulation as nuclear, but more would be nice in some areas… but most because they are subsidized).Nuclear power, on the other hand? We’re regulated as hell. That’s where most of the cost comes from once you get past initial construction. Just the other day we had OSHA tell divers they couldn't go over the safety railing into the water without a life jacket and safety line… (the divers reacted in a great way - they just ignored them, and rightfully so.) But its that sort of reason why nuclear power plants are safe, and expensive: regulation is followed to the letter until it is proven that the regulation does not apply in a specific situation. We can’t take water from the river to wash off bird poop back into the river. That’s how regulated we are.As a result, the slightest sign of potential injury, and major freakouts occur. Someone accidentally bumps their head on something? Gotta spend tons of money turning the area into a padded room. (Not literally). And unlike Chernobyl, American plants are designed to withstand a pressure detonation.Fukushima had issues, yes, and they didn’t follow proper safety culture. But Fukushima still has yet to kill anyone. As much as I hate TEPCO, they still did do some things right. That wind turbine fire killed two, compared to Fukushimas zero. I’m not keeping score. I want us to use wind. But I’m putting things in perspective.Nuclear power is ridiculously safe. What’s that, terrorists you say? What are they going to hit it with? A plane won’t dent the containment. They don’t know enough of the layout of the plant to do anything. We’ve tested this. If you question this:Planes are flimsy and made of aluminum.2 meter thick reinforced concrete walls can withstand just about anything, and that’s not even the reactor yet; the reactor itself is made of thick steel; it might as well be a battleship. And nuclear power security forces are top-notch - and entrenched. Good luck on that.“But it’s so much more expensive?” Oh, I thought we wanted to save the environment, not save money. There are plenty of ways we could make it cheaper. Like get rid of the Coal Lobbyists. You know, the guys who are promoting a form of energy generation more than 10,000 times deadlier than nuclear.I will say this: They are safe for the general populace. Our old plants are hardly killing anyone at all, the ones we are building now are half a century more advanced in some cases. Compare that to computers, and you’ll see why I consider it ridiculous to use “Chernobyl” as a reason to argue against building new reactors. (Aside from the fact that few nuclear power plants operate like Chernobyl). They are not so safe for the operators. One of my supervisors likes to remind us on at least a weekly basis “This place will kill you if you let it.” Rotating machinery, places to fall, danger of electrical shock, et cetera.“But what about waste?” Well, we need to take care of that, but we have plans, but I suspect the Coal-lobbyists that shot down high-temperature (therefore higher efficiency, therefore higher energy and lower cost - thanks for forcing some validity to that “reactors cost a lot” argument, Coal) reactors are also shutting down things like the TWR and other reactor designs that would make nuclear power the first and only form of energy generation to reuse it’s own spent waste. As it stands, that waste isn’t going anywhere - which is good. We can contain it, regulate it, and monitor it until we can store it. We’ve got a while… now if only anti-environment fearmongers would let us do something with it.
Why is DRDO not as successful in its efforts, as is ISRO?
If someone really want to compare DRDO and ISRO , one should take the holistic approach , and not just look through the lens of media declaring this and that project as failure , especially when most of the science / defense journalists do not know the difference between Motor and Mortar or GPS and GPRS , especially so When the both organizations situated in same society and drawing from the same pool of people .Lets first analyze the market or end user of both organization . For ISRO the end user is Indian government , who will happily use their satellite and rockets , even if they are horribly inefficient , but still do their duty lanching small and medium weight satellites launching to Geo stationary orbits . Due to lower labor costs in India , they still offer very competitive prices compared to western countries . ISRO still have a long way to go when it comes to lifting heavy satellites to geostationary orbits. PSLV lifts just 1400 KG , while its newest edition GSLV MK-3 lifts 4000 KG. Compared to that Russian Proton K Lifts 6300 Kg , Ariane 5 of European space agency lifts 10,500Kg and SpaceX Falcon 9 lifts 8300 Kg. Chinese and Japanese are capable to lift anywhere between 8000 to 14000 Kgs.DRDO’s main customer is Indian army , who is under no constrain to buy just from DRDO . For the national security they can buy the best from anywhere in the world IF goverment has no objection and subject to availability of budget . Now I need not remind you the prevalence of corruption in every walk of Indian society . Buying from DRDO is not going to make any shady politician / bureaucrat rich .DRDO has done extremely well when it comes to strategic systems , even If they are supremely complex , namely Missiles , RADARs , SONARs , as no country is going to sell that to India . DRDO has successfully delivered these systems ( Agni , Prithvi , Akash , Rajendra and 3d-CAR RADARs) to armed forces and they are happy with these systems . Heck they successfully tested Submarine launched missile and Anti missile systems which are an order of magnitude more difficult than a tank or UAV . Guess why ? Because no one will sell these items to India hence no kickbacks .When it comes to systems like Tanks , artillery , Guns , short range RADARs , or namely any Tactical stuff , even as a lowly Rifle / handgun ( which fundamentally use 100–150 years old technology , any half decent country can produce a fairly good Rifle / handgun in half a decade if so desired ) , suddenly DRDO expertise go up in smoke . Mysteriously barrels start bursting , magazines start cracking , engine oil start leaking , Midway of system development , forces will change requirement and the whole thing will be delayed to such a point that only favored middleman’s weapon system will be left in the race . Easy-Peasy .I will give you few examples. When Israel developed Merkava tank , They inducted their Merkava Mk-1 right away although it was not up to their expectations . Over the years it was continuously upgraded to merkava Mk-2 , Mk-3 , Mk-4 standards and it is one of the finest fighting machine today. Compared to that Indian MBT Arjun was much better even in MK-1 Avatar , but I will tell you the stories how it was treated during the trials . Incidentally Israelis tested and much liked Arjun and called it Desert Ferrari .This guy scored direct hit from 2 Kms away on his very first shells he fired from Arjun MBT.In one of the user trials It was run in reverse gear for over 1000 Kms , resulting in some broken seal and oil leakage , quickly lapped by media as engine failure . The whole breadth of Pakistan against which it is supposed to be used is just 450 Fu***ng Kms . Are they planning to use it in retreat all the way from Jaisalmer to Calcutta and never getting five seconds to put it in forward gear?Another time they held comparative trials against Russian T-72 . Arjun can fire on moving target while on the move itself . T-72 can not . Trial asked both to reach a particular place , acquire the target and destroy it . T-72 came up to line , stopped , acquired the target and fired . Arjun Acquired Target while on the move and destroyed it before it even reach the stopping line .Do you know who was declared winner . T-72 .Why ? Because Arjun failed to stop at the firing line before firing and hence failed the test . When there is lot of money involved in kickbacks , it makes people behave stupidly .People crib about German engine in Arjun , now which organisation will invest in R&D and assembly line when your total order is 124 , that too came in installments of 40 each . What will those technicians and Engineers do once they are done with the order .The whole drama of Arjun being overweight is hogwash. Army made its GSQR ( General staff quantitative requirement) to develop a heavy tank when Pakistan was testing American M1 Abrams . They wanted tank with 4 persons and no autoloader . Tanks of this category all over the world are in 65 - 70 ton category and Arjun compares favorably with them . T-72 and T 90 on the other hand are based on Russian philosophy of three crew members lightweight tanks with auto loaders , resulting in weight 46–48 tons . Now you can not ask a TATA 407 to do all its tasks while matching weight of a Maruti Alto .There is a lot of stories in media about cracking of INSAS ( Indian Small Arms System) Rifles magazine and its lack of power .While developing army wanted transparent magazine to help soldier see the remaining cartridge in the magazine . In the extreme Indian climate of -50 celsius at Siachin to +50 in Thar desert of Rajasthan , no doubt the polycarbonate magazines faced cracking problem . But no other country will be asked for the same type of magazines when imported , But DRDO will be pulled through mud for same reason even though the problem is long licked to the satisfaction of army.Another drawback often coming to light regarding INSAS is their “Lack of stopping power” . INSAS is based on doctrine of injuring soldiers rather than killing them outright , having a lighter cartridge , as taking an injured soldier out of battle will bind some manpower of enemy , and also a wounded soldier on battlefield as well as in hospital will bring the enemy morale down . It was an american doctrine that Indian army copied and asked the INSAS in NATO 5.56 caliber . Now if you want lot of “Killing power “ you can either use AK-47 or get the INSAS re-barrelled in heavier caliber . In Rifle technology everything is compromise and there is no super gun which can magically achieve everything you ask from it .The only way out as I see is If the current government just ban the import of equipment which use low / medium level technology , you will suddenly see DRDO made stuff matching equipment from world over .
Emperor Palpatine has taken leave and placed you in charge of the entire empire. He has tasked you with destroying the rebels, how do you accomplish this?
Step one, kill the Emperor. The Emperor is dead. Long live the Emperor! He was Sith, and he put me in charge of the entire Empire, what did he expect? I have no wish to be a mere regent, but rule as sovereign in my own right. Now, onto those pesky rebels.First, outlaw slavery. Convicted criminals may still be sentenced to hard labor, but the Empire cares about the People, not just the Humans. All good people are welcome to join and contribute to the Empire. In Unity, there is Strength. Each of us is stronger with all of us.Taxes are made reasonable, and a system to petition for redress of grievances is instituted.Next, we institute a policy of limited but “free” social services. Free at the point of use, that is, it’s all taxpayer funded. Public transport, soup kitchens, medical clinics, small business loans, that sort of thing. Then of course comes “free” public education. Reverence for the Sovereign, tradition, and respect for authority will be emphasized, but not crammed down student’s throats. We’ve got them for what, twelve years? We’ve got time to be subtle. The Empire will produce several Public Access vid channels, catering to different tastes, and “free” to the public. All broadcast stations will be required to include these channels with any vid package they offer, even if these channels are the only ones in the package. Content will be largely benign, but produced under the auspices of the Ministry of Public Affairs (read propaganda department). Again, continual but subtle pro-Empire propaganda will be present. Those who question authority will be presented as either naive but well meaning fools who only need to be shown the light and brought into the fold, or outright vicious villains who are out destroy civilization for their own gains. This allows people who have anti-Empire friends to see them as sympathetic, but still be able to demonize those other rebel sympathizers over there. The Imperial Stormtrooper Corps will be stood down. The Imperial Counter-Terrorism and Public Safety Task Force will be stood up. An overeager reporter on one of the Public Access channels will remark that the acronym is unpronounceable, and dub them the Guardian Angels. Yes, this means that Stormies are just going to change uniform and insignia. Mostly, their helmets will have clear faceplates to humanize them. We’ll claim to keep using the white armor because it would waste too much taxpayer money to replace it all just for appearances sake. However, the Task Force Elements may be authorized to custom-paint their armor to be more visually distinct and friendly-appearing.Any terrorists caught by the Guardian Angels will be broadcast on the Imperial Public Access channels. Pictures of them will be selectively shown to paint them in a bad light. Pictures of them looking angry, or covered in blood, or shots of them yelling. Audio will be included if their hateful rhetoric is useful. Any deaths resulting from their capture will be blamed on the terrorists. Most people found to be harboring rebel terrorists will be exonerated. After all, frightened people under duress should not be blamed for the actions of a few vile terrorists. The Guardian Angels will be understanding and sympathetic of their plight. However, those who are blatant collaborators or repeat “offenders” will face arrested as well. We get it, sometimes the bad guys threaten your family to make you do bad things against our beloved and benevolent Emperor, but that’s the third time this week. Even your luck isn’t that bad.The Public Access channels will also feature Guardian Angels personnel engaging in heroic acts of public service. A patrolman stopping to play with children. A junior patrolman youthfully disregarding orders and personal safety to rush into a burning housing complex to rescue a mother and child. A senior patrolman, weeks from retirement, in the hospital after he threw himself onto a terrorist bomb to save innocent civilians. As public opinion starts to rise, the Guardian Angels will begin it’s Youth Auxiliary Guardian program. Children under 18 can join, and learn useful skills in wilderness survival, personal accountability, and public service. Anyone reaching the rank of “Arch Angel” before 18 can enter the Guardian Angels, or any military or public service branch, one paygrade higher than other new recruits.Additionally, I would revise the operating paradigm of the Imperial Navy. As I wrote in Murphy Barrett's answer to You are suddenly placed in charge of the Imperial Navy (Star Wars). How would you fix its many problems? No more superweapons: They can only be in one place at one time, are insanely expensive, and are single-point failures in the strategic plan.Revise basic tactical doctrine: No more shipping out alone and fighting at knife ranges. Use Star Destroyers positioned for effective mutual support, and engage at long range.Improve anti-starfighter doctrine: Star Destroyers are effective capital ships, but very vulnerable to starfighters. Star Destroyers will be outfitted with many CIWS installations to better deal with fighters. Additionally, we will begin building Fleet Escorts, smaller than Star Destroyers, specifically designed to deal with fighters and small craft. With a mixed battle group of SDs and FEs, the group should be resistant to both capital ships and fighters.School: Create or improve upon Petty Officer’s School, to teach POs technical and leadership skills, both as junior POs and Chiefs. Additionally, revamp Officer’s School to focus on leadership, tactics, strategy, logistics, essentially turn it into a real war college, rather than focusing on ideology as it seems to do.Meritorious promotion: After we’ve had time for the schools to take effect, stop promoting people based on ideology, and promote them based on merit. If someone fails at a task, rather than executing him, try to learn from that failure. If it was due to willful negligence, fine, pike him. We do have to be the bad guys after all. But some failures are beyond your own control.Ship Design: Institute the Department of Naval Redundancy Department. No longer will taking out the bridge of a ship cause it to lose all control. There will be redundant controls near engineering, and at least one other place. All systems will have secondary, and sometimes even tertiary, backups. This is the start of my Imperial Navy Improvement Plan. The Imperial Army the Imperial Bureaucracy would undergo similar improvements.[Edit} David Spearman reminded me of an oversight. Grand Admiral Thrawn will be promoted to the newly created position of Grand Marshal of the Empire, with the Imperial Army, Imperial Navy, and the Imperial Counter-Terrorism and Public Safety Task Force placed under his operational control. At this rate, I expect the terrorist problem to be mostly taken care of. The people will love the Empire, and those terrorists will be but a small nuisance and easy scapegoat.Fear will not keep the local systems in line. Bread, circuses, free internet, and a path for advancement within the system for those who are ambitious, will.(https://www.artstation.com/artwork/emperor-s-champion-lord-vader)See also Murphy Barrett's answer to What would be an effective approach to writing a Sith protagonist in the Star Wars universe?Original question-Emperor Palpatine has taken leave and placed you in charge of the entire Empire.
