PDF Editor FAQ

When was the last time a U.S. federal holiday was changed?

The addition of MLK Day in 1983 was the last change. The next change will probably be the removal of Columbus Day.You can see a list of all of the federal holidays and where they were added here:Federal holidays in the United States - Wikipedia

Would you support eliminating Columbus Day as a US federal holiday and replacing it with Election Day?

Definitely. Some people argue that it wouldn’t do any good, and that turnout wouldn’t increase significantly. Maybe that’s true. But what harm is there in actually testing out the theory?Columbus was a genocidal maniac who shouldn’t be honored by anybody.Literally, the worst thing that could possibly happen from making Election Day a holiday is… nothing. This is about as harmless a policy as it’s possible to have. If it doesn’t increase turnout, then we’d be no worse off than we are now. And if it does, then citizens would be more engaged in their democracy.I could see why some people might be apathetic about it, but I honestly can’t think of a good reason to oppose it.

What are your thoughts on the proposal of Juneteenth as a federal holiday, considering 5 states still held slaves until the passing of the 13th amendment on December 6th?

My honest answer? I’d tell them to make up their minds. You want to get rid of Columbus Day as a federal holiday, fine. I’m on board with that. But for years, the clamor has been for Election Day to become a federal holiday in its place, given the excuses people make that they can’t get off work to go to the polls that day. (After being too lazy to take advantage of early voting for weeks before the election, of course, but we won’t get into that.)So now we’re talking about Juneteenth as a federal holiday. Fine, that’s OK too.But you can’t have both. We’re not adding more and more paid holidays to the government calendar just to satisfy every group’s desire for political correctness and/or “social justice.” Government employees work on our dime and they get plenty of time off as it is.So make up your minds. We’ll stop honoring the Genoese captain who enslaved a bunch of people in the Caribbean after confusing it with China. You can accommodate lazy people with one more day they can’t be bothered to go vote on, or you can have the day they freed the slaves in Texas. (Or you can even have Dec. 18, the day they freed the last slaves in Kentucky and Delaware, if you prefer.)But you’ll have to make up your minds.
