PDF Editor FAQ

Are drill instructors ever nice?

One of the recruits in my platoon was an orphan. During mail call we were all very pleased to receive mail and this guy starts to cry. He simply had no one to write him. One of the Drill Instructors saw him crying and asked what was going on. The Drill Instructor was moved. The ladies of the Drill Instructor’s church all started writing him. He got a card or a letter each mail call for the rest of basic training. They are men with normal human emotions. They have a job to do. Break civilians and mold them into Marines.

Has anyone ever punched their drill sergeant?

Benjamin did and accomplished something no recruit had done before. It was explained to me that a drill sergeant and a drill instructor are two different things. A drill sergeant is a position that is kept for a longer period of time whereas a drill instructor is a temporary assignment reserved for training Marines. Due to the physical and mental stress you can't be a drill instructor for a long time. This is important because drill instructors will push much harder and are generally less experienced.I know a young man that graduated high-school and promptly enlisted in the Marines. Benjamin could track a deer through a forest in a rainstorm and was a gifted outdoorsman. He excelled at everything he did. He was born to be a Marine. Highest marks on his ASVAB test too.His performance continued in the Marine Boot camp. Expert level on his first marksmanship test. First or second in every physical challenge. (Merrall was also a freak of nature and provided a serious physical adversary) But the strongest part of Benjamin is his heart. He would protect anybody even at great personal peril. He was told that the instructors could not touch the recruits. One DI was particularly brutal and didn't get the note about not touching the recruits. So Benjamin does what he always does, he came to another recruit’s aid. We didn't get all the details but we were told that it was not done in anger. Decked him solid is what we were told. He was up on a disciplinary hearing but was allowed to continue due to the circumstances. On graduation day his mom and I talked to the senior drill instructor who told us, “Benjamin is not the first recruit to punch an instructor but he is the first to punch a drill instructor, and still get a meritorious promotion to PFC at boot camp.”That's Benjamin.Update: I highly recommend NOT to hit a superior officer. Very rarely turns out this way. Yes, this is 100% true. He replied below, “Marines are a lot like hot dogs. Everybody loves them but nobody wants to know how they are made.”

What are some things where small percentages matter a lot?

Instructor: This concludes our training on correct usage.I raise my hand.Me: "So .....one small question, what is the success rate on these?"Instructor: About 95%! Very high! Only 4.97% fail.Me: but it is a parachute…Instructor: Well we do offer free insurance coverage for up to 12 months!!!! :) :) :)Me: But bro…
