The women were mostly British, who had been employed as secretaries and teachers or were wives of British businessmen or army officers. The Japanese segregated the women from male prisoners. They took the younger girls, laid them on the floor and raped them while their mothers could do nothing but stand by helplessly and watch.The Japanese - of course - knew that they had committed war crimes and took steps to conceal their crimes by disposing of bodies and cleaning the hospital of the bloody mess created by their deeds. Surprisingly, they spared some VAD nurses and doctors who survived to denounce the Japanese of their foul acts.After capturing Singapore, the Japanese unleashed a reign of terror and rape of personnel at the Alexandria hospital. You know, I shall never forget that first night. And we felt so helpless. This was going to happen from now on, night after night.Thereafter, these women would be repeatedly raped and abused for months. Those who became pregnant were forced to have abortions.As well as being raped and sexually assaulted every day and night, the Dutch girls lived in constant fear of beatings and other physical violence. Japanese soldiers did what they liked to the girls and many were extremely abusive towards white women. Those girls who unfortunately conceived were kicked in the stomach or thrown down the stairs to induce miscarriages.Although the number of European women raped by the Japanese paled in comparison to the number of Chinese and Korean women, they suffered equally horrific ordeal of rape and abuse at the hands of the Japanese.Their stories are the testament to the sexual depravity and brutality of the Japanese military during WW2 that far exceeded those of the Nazis and Soviets. While rapes of enemy women were committed by all sides during the war, what distinguishes the Imperial Japan from other combatant nations is state-sanctioned sexual slavery on an unprecedentedly large scale. Indeed, Japanese military leaders - believing that sex was vital to maintaining morale of Japanese servicemen - authorized the recruitment of women for sexual servitude in addition to condoning rapes of enemy women. These women suffered degradation and abuse of unimaginable magnitude. Apart from permanent physical damage, they suffered from life-long deep psychological trauma.
