What is daily life like in Baghdad?

Crowded. The Genie's Lamp Square and the Iraqi National Theater behind it. [1]Spanning ~79 square miles, Baghdad is too big and diverse to fit into one picture. It is the second largest Arab city after Cairo, with a population of ~7 million. It is also the second largest city in Western Asia after Tehran. To put that into perspective, Houston is ~600 sq miles, yet has its population is only about double that of Baghdad.Martyr's Memorial, one of many architectural highlights in Baghdad. [2]Baghdad is a collision of two worlds. Urbanization brought the rural farmers into the city a few decades ago, resulting in a strong clash between two somewhat distinct cultures with the country–tribalism vs. urbanism. Lavish houses and luxurious hotels just minutes away from homes surrounded by mountains of junk. Porsches and cheap Iranian-made Saipas drive alongside each other on the roads.Baghdad, almost divided in half by the Tigris. [3]Most of the infrastructure was built during the 60's and 70's. Saddam did build some infrastructure during the 80's, but a lot of it was either lost during Gulf War I or significantly degraded during the 90's, and–of course–Gulf War II.The Clock of Baghdad, behind it is the Saddam Tower, now called the Baghdad Tower. [4]Now, if you lived in Baghdad, you might find driving to work in your 2010+ car somewhat strange. At one point, you'd be driving on a really nice road, with green trees and the beautiful Tigris on your side. Then, just minutes later, you would hit a crowded area–perhaps a crowded bazaar or a poor neighborhood where kids play soccer in the street, not minding the passing traffic. But most importantly, your journey isn't going to last long without hitting a checkpoint. Oh those checkpoints!A checkpoint in Baghdad. [5]You see, Baghdad's method of combatting car bombers is to intentionally create traffic jams–that is, large gatherings of machines loaded with gasoline. A checkpoint typically involves 4-5 lanes merging into one, and two or three security officers (army, police, etc.) have you waiting for an eternity so they can scan your car for explosives. To that end, they use a handheld device called the ADE 651 (see picture below)[6], a bogus device claimed to have the ability to detect explosive material. The procedure required for this device to "work" is painfully slow. An officer has to tread lightly along the side of your car while holding the device in a perfectly horizontal position, waiting for the device's metal "antenna" to point at you.A member of the federal police scanning vehicles for explosives using the ADE 651. [10]And, in the unfortunate event of that happening, you're then required to go on the side for a more "thorough" inspection. You present your license and registration–unless of course, you don't have a license, which is completely normal, in which case you can present your ID instead. Then, you would have to sit there and listen to some officer ask you your name, as he stares at your photo ID. But it's OK, he's actually illiterate, so he's going to pretend that he's able to read, and you just play along and demonstrate having the mental capacity as to know your own name.A bookseller at the historical Al-Mutanabi Street. Al-Mutanabi is one of the greatest classical Iraqi poets who became famous for claiming to be a prophet (his name actually translates to just that). Today, Al-Mutanabi street is Baghdad's heart and soul of literacy and intellectual community. [4]Finally, it turns out that what triggered the device was your regular window cleaner, or your tooth filling, or a fragrance, or your car remote, because all of these are said to trigger the device... and you can now go on with your journey.A T-wall fence separating two neighborhoods in Baghdad. [7]Now, as you go from one neighborhood to another, you'll notice that every building that matters (ministries, fancy hotels, etc.) and all the crowded areas are surrounded with high T-wall fences, some with images painted on them in a hopeless attempt to make them less dull and depressing. None of those places had said T-walls prior to 2003, and the fact that they do now means that every one of them suffered a bombing attack at some point and many were killed.A long line of T-walls protecting a new hotels complex. [8]Four, five, or ten checkpoints later, you reach your destination. And if you happen to work for the government, then you're most likely to spend a very unproductive day trying to do as little as you could get away with. You might as well take two-hour lunch breaks like everyone else, while people are waiting in line for you to tell them that what they needed isn't in your job description, and that they should go wait in that other long line.A few hours later, you get off work and, because you have an empty tank, you go to a gas station to fill up–well, unless there's a fuel crisis, which actually happens a lot in the country famous for oil. In that case, you would have to wait for a few hours in line for gas.Long line of cars waiting for gas in the country most famous for having oil. A young man is selling a cold local drink called "Balango" to drivers waiting in the burning heat. [9]And then you get home. Grid power's out, but that's ok; you have a subscription with a "neighborhood generator" that runs 6 hours/day. You also have your own personal generator, which is why you didn't have enough gas in your car, you had to pump it out to feed the generator. At last, you get dinner, watch some TV and go to sleep, absolutely hopeless in a better tomorrow. Here is a video that attempts to portray Baghdad in a more colorful way, yet still gives the occasional glimpse of its not-so-colorful parts.A documentary of one rainy day in Baghdad.[1] معالم بغداد - الساحات[2] IRAQ (Mesopotamia/Beth Nehrain/الرافدين/ܒܝܬ ܢܗܪܝܢ) One photo per post[3] Index of /~emerson/images/baghdad[4] BAGHDAD - SkyscraperCity[5] Iraqi checkpoint | Egypt Independent[6] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADE_651[7] Iraq war sadr city baghdad zoriah.jpg[8] Baghdad Streets[9] The Fuel And Energy Crisis In Baghdad[10] In Iraq, the Bomb-Detecting Device That Didn't Work, Except to Make Money

Illegal aliens who are authorized to work can only work in non-federal jobs limited to us citizens, correct?

The premise of the question is false. An undocumented worker does not have any legal right to work in the USA.They can’t legally work at any governmental jobs. They can’t work legally at any private business jobs. They can’t legally work as gardeners, maids, house keepers, agricultural picking jobs, window cleaner or any other job. Those that do work, do it “under the table” with the full knowledge of their employer that they’re not documented. This creates a permanent underclass that is exploited by employers.
