It was always my aim to pursue my higher studies in Germany after completing my Bachelor’s. I am currently enrolled in an Automotive master’s program at Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt.When I graduated back in 2016, I was also clueless like any other graduates in India. I started a job in a local industry, but I wasn’t satisfied with my work(I would not consider it as a work!!). So I started looking for the programs, visited some consultancies which help students with their admission. Generally, 95% of students who are planning to for higher studies, put their whole faith and future on the hands of these consultants. The consultants apply for the students in the universities where they can get admission easily, without acknowledging students about the reputation of the university and future prospects of the program, and later the students regret. I didn’t want to do that.After some research, I realized we don’t need to pay to these people to get us into Master’s program. I applied to different 8–9 programs and I did all the paperwork and all the applications by myself, including the last step, applying and getting my Visa.It’s not that hard. It’s all on the websites of the university, the instruction, how to apply, documents needed and other things. I used to work full day and during night, I spent 2–3 hours daily to gather all the information, making documents for 3 months.I maintained one excel sheet which included information like programs that I wanted to apply, application deadline and procedure, document checklist and other stuff. This way I knew what is what and when to apply. This was very helpful.Most of the German universities have switched their application procedure via “Uni-assist”. It is like a central portal for the applications to the German universities for Master’s as well as Bachelor’s program. Basically you apply first here and they will give one document(Converting your grades into German grade system), with which you apply to a particular university.The application procedure defers from university to university. In some cases, you just have to apply online, or in some cases you are supposed to apply online and send the documents.You can save a lot of money if you do applications by yourself. The biggest advantage is, you are aware of the courses you are applying to.Some tips:At the beginning, start filtering the universities that you want to apply to, because there are hundreds of study programs. Start with a simple google search and also from Deutscher Akademischer AustauschdienstAvoid consultants, don’t let them decide what you will be doing for next 2 years in a foreign country.I saved around Rs. 1 Lak by avoiding consultants. I invested those money in my German language classes, exams and IELTS prep.For sending application documents via courier, you can save upto Rs. 1000. Generally we send documents via DHL or Bluedart, and they charge around Rs. 1200–1400 per courier(delivery time: 1 week). I opted for Indian post, they charge Rs. 200 (also depends on weight), however they take min 15 days to deliver.Plan everything in advance: Generally application period lasts 2 months(also depends on the university but min is 1 month). I had all documents ready that I needed to submit even before the start of the application period. So when the application period started, I submitted everything.For some universities, you will need to send the documents before some deadline. As I had planned everything in advance, I sent the docs via Indian post(the cheapest ever!). I don’t care if they take 15 days to deliver, but I made sure that they would deliver before the deadline.Stay in touch with people: This is the most important thing. What I did was, I was in touch with many applicants via whatsapp groups. We used to share all the details about application procedures, deadlines and many other things. It really helped me because, when I applied to the university that I am currently studying, they changed their application procedure from direct to Uni-assist, and only few people knew about it. Also it was very confusing to apply in Uni-assist at that time.Some of these people helped each other a lot and we all have become good friends since. Currently, all are in different cities in Germany, but I meet them when I travel to that city. It’s really fun, making new friends.I was also in contact with some seniors who were studying in the universities that I applied to. I asked the about the study programs and future prospects, since they know better because they are already studying. For this, LinkedIn was the perfect tool for searching.For visa, everything is available on the embassy website of a particular region. You can read it and prepare everything by yourself.If you are stuck somewhere with the application, you can directly send an email to the university and get the information.
