My daughter studies in a very fancy school (and expensive one). And she flunks maths regularly. I was terrified of chemistry at school and just did enough to pass the damn exams. My father did not hit me, scold me and did not hyperventilate about it. I pass on the same courtesy to my daughter.She absolutely hates maths (genetics from my side) and aces biology and history (also genetics from my side). So I have nothing to complain about.I usually have very interesting conversations during PTM.Teacher - Sir, your daughter is slightly behind in maths.Me - Madam, if I studied what she now studies in 6th grade, I would have started suffering from bipolar disorder.This is 6th grade IB mathsMy daughter at least comes close to a passing grade, I would have flunked spectacularly if I studied this in 6th grade.So I do not punish my daughter for getting bad grades in maths because if she asks me in return to explain this maths I will be embarrassed to death. A good father chooses his battles wisely. And maths is not one of them.

I got a 7 in HL Maths in 2014.“How hard is HL Maths?” is the question that all brave souls ask when they first consider taking HL Maths.I asked it too.I spent a whole weekend just mulling over that one question over…and over… and over. In the end I took a leap of faith, and I’ve never regretted the choice. Here’s why.Dispelling the mythHL Maths gets a bad reputation for being extremely difficult because people complain about it.A lot.That’s why questions like this exist on Quora—because it has a bad reputation.But think about this:Who are the complainers?The complainers are usually the students who:A) aren’t good at it,B) don’t like it, orC) don’t work hard enough.You never hear the people doing well at HL Maths saying how manageable or easy it is—not because these students don’t exist but because society deems such behaviour to be arrogant.So that’s reassuring: HL Maths certainly isn’t as hard as the rumours suggest it is because the sample population from which we obtain this flawed ‘wisdom’ is, without a doubt, biased.A realistic look at the syllabusLet’s get real here. You will learn these topics in HL Maths:AlgebraFunctions and equationsCircular functions and trigonometryVectorsStatistics and probabilityCalculusOptionThese first 6 Core topics are covered in all medium to advanced high school mathematics courses around the world. So nothing special there.The Option, however, is an exception. The Option is where you learn some first-year university mathematics, like advanced calculus, statistics, discrete mathematics, etc., but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to do. I actually did better in my Options exam than my Core exams.OK, good: The topics aren’t alien maths or super-duper-ridiculously-obscure maths.Difficulty is subjectiveDifficulty is a subjective thing. I loved maths. I work hard. HL Maths was easy in some cases, manageable mostly, and hard in some cases. Still, it took a lot of work to get a 7 (~0.5-1 hour of study every day).Should I choose IB Maths HL?If you wish to score a final grade of 6 or 7, you must enjoy mathematics, you must have confidence in mathematics, and you must be a hard worker. Here are some scenarios:If you are in the top 1% of your age in terms of mathematical ability, and you work hard, and you love maths, then HL Maths will be easy(ish) and manageable and rarely hard.If you are in the top 10% of your age in terms of mathematical ability, and you work hard, and you love maths, then HL Maths will be easy in some places (~10%), manageable for the most part (~60%), and hard in some cases (~30%).If you have average mathematical ability, and you work hard, and you love maths, then HL Maths will be manageable ~25% of the time and hard ~75% of the time.If you have average mathematical ability, and you don’t work hard, and you don’t love maths, and you are doing the subject just to get into a university course, don’t do HL Maths.If you found this answer helpful, please Upvote and Follow :)

I took Math SL, and got a 7. I did my IA on the use of mathematics in the courtroom, as I aspire to be a lawyer and find doing work on an area I am extremely passionate about to be both interesting and manageable. I got 18/20 at the end.I think you should first consider the level/type of mathematics you want to use. If you’re taking Math SL, don’t do something too difficult. I think something like conditional probability makes a good IA (I did mine on Bayes theorem, which is basically an adapted form of conditional probability and another person got 19/20 by doing conditional probability in healthcare/nursing). It is good to shortlist a few types, eg. probability, modelling, graphing etc. Then, consider the area you want to delve into, eg. law, economics, healthcare, aeronautics. There will definitely be a range of topics with varying difficulty that you can explore!If you know what you want to study in university, this is even better. I encourage you to do an exploration on the subject you plan to apply to, since it can give you a better understanding of the subject, makes you more interested in the subject/convinced that you want to do this subject and you can write about it in your personal statement or talk about it with admissions officers/interviewers. Honestly, I came to look at Law and the justice system from another perspective after doing my IA!Anyway, don’t get too worried about the IA. It’s not that difficult, as it is marked according to the rubrics. All you have to do is to make sure that math is correct, and that you always reflect throughout the IA. Go like “this means that there is a high probability of a judgement being wrong”, “but, what does a “high probability” even mean? Where do we draw the line”, “this made me realise the danger of using mathematics in the courtroom, as it is difficult to interpret the significance of a calculated probability” etc. Just write your thoughts and musings in the paper. Also, make sure your paper is very organised, with good subheadings like “Introduction”, “Types of Probability”. Remember to briefly describe how your paper will proceed (eg. “I will first explore the types of probability, and then show how they differ”). Write it in words, and be very clear. Examiners love papers which are easy and interesting to read. If you do all that, you would definitely get close to full marks!TIP: TRY NOT TO DO GAME THEORY AS IT IS TOO EASY AND IS OVERDONE. FEW DO WELL WHEN THEY DO GAME THEORY. ALSO, WHILE YOU MAY LIKE FOOTBALL, EXPLORING THE PROBABILITY OF PENALTY KICKS BEING SAVED/BEST POSITION OF THE GOALKEEPER IS OVERDONE. DON’T DO THAT.
