Nobody wants to hear you say, “I myself strode up to the beaker and daringly added 500 mL of the new solution.” The “500 mL of the new solution were added” form is totally appropriate to that writing situation.Likewise, when the people who did a thing are too many to list: “Thousands of personal injury lawsuits were filed in Luzerne County last year.” Please, please don’t start listing every one of those several thousand who filed suit just so you can put them in the active voice.What you mean is “How do you stop overusing the passive voice?” Just examine what you’ve written and see whether the emphasis ought to go on who did the thing, or the thing that got done.
