PDF Editor FAQ

What did a Trump supporter say that left you gobsmacked?

My husband is the Trump supporter. He’s retired Army, Military Police, spent 12 years as a corrections officer for the State before retiring altogether. We have not been able to discuss politics without a screaming match since about 2 months after Trump took office, when it became obvious to me that the idiot had no intention of ‘draining the swamp’ but instead, was filling it with his own alligators. We’ve been together 39 years now and neither of us enjoyed the arguments so we decided that politics were ‘off limits’. And with a few exceptions here and there, we’ve managed to keep that bargain. Then, after the ‘incident’ at the Capitol on Jan 6, I just had to know. So I asked if he was okay with what had happened. He said ‘yes’, and started to go into his reasons for supporting it but I said, “No, that’s okay, I don’t need to know why. I was just curious.”He went back to watching Fox news and I sat here at my computer, trying not to cry or otherwise reveal the fact that my heart was breaking. And here’s the worst of it - I know he didn’t agree with everything Trump did. But he is totally convinced that the Dems are gonna come and take his guns away, so he supported anything that would keep them out of power.I lost a lot of respect for him that day, and that hurts most of all…EDIT: Tuesday 3/3/21 5:55am(hope I did the bold font correctly)(Oops! Apparently not)I am truly overwhelmed by this response to my dilemma. My thanks go out to each and every one of you, including the few who think I’m just a bitch. This entire conversation had been cathartic in a way I never expected and I am sincerely grateful for the experience. Before Sunday, I had only spoken to a couple of my sisters about this. They were very supportive, of course, but the conversations were all about the negatives. Yesterday, and today, I’ve been reminded of all the positives as I’ve written about various aspects of our life together. We do love each other and, except for the politics, we get along really well. We make each other laugh, a lot. And we’ve shared too many heartaches that have only made us stronger. There is one thing I need to clarify so that you all can understand how deeply my husband’s been brainwashed by Fox news, I should have mentioned it in my first answer but I was too wrapped up in my own misery to think about it at the time.Five years ago (2016), I made hubby put the headphones on while watching Fox because I couldn’t bear hearing the BS. But, here’s the thing, he would often nap with those headphones on, anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours. I thought nothing of it until sometime last year when it hit me like a ton of bricks one day as I heard him snoring behind me.His subconscious had been soaking up all the lies and all the BS for over 4 years. He literally, however unintentionally, brainwashed himself.I felt like an idiot for not having seen what was going on. It should have been obvious to me, but I was oblivious. So it’s partially my fault that it happened. After talking to one of my sisters, I brought it up with him once I figured out the least offensive way of doing so without even mentioning politics.ME: “Hey, babe, you know how suggestible the subconscious is, right? You know, like listening to motivational tapes while you’re sleeping, etc.”HUBBY: “Yeah, that’s how I used to study for exams in college, by listening to tapes of the lectures while I slept. It helped a lot.”ME: “Exactly! (long pause as I made sure he was looking in my eyes for what came next). You’ve been listening to Fox news while napping with the headphones on for about 4 years now.”HUBBY: “And..?”ME: “And I think you may have been influenced by all that stuff pouring into your brain.”HUBBY: “Hmmm…”ME: “Do you think you could maybe turn over to one of your country music channels while you nap?”HUBBY: “Uh, yeah, I can do that.”ME: “Thank you.”And that’s exactly what he does. On the few occasions when he forgets to change the channel before falling asleep, I’ll do it for him (even though I’m always tempted to turn it to MSNBC instead). So, he is not completely unreasonable, and I am not just a bitch. I’m a bitch who loves my husband. So, again, THANK YOU ALL for helping me work through this. A weight has been lifted from my heart and my outlook on life is positive again… :)

What was the hardest course you took at MIT?

The Physics "Junior Lab” is famously tough.Third-year students work in pairs to replicate four classic physics experiments in a semester. For each experiment, they calibrate their equipment, gather data, analyze that data, write a paper, and give a talk. All of this takes 20–60 hours per week. Few of those hours are easy. Most students are thrown far outside their comfort zones. Are you bad at lab work? Can’t code?Never used LaTeX?Don’t know statistics?Never written a scientific paper?Scared of public speaking?Hate working with partners?Great! You have three weeks to learn all of that. The j-lab staff will offer to coach you on any of these skills, and they’ll keep the lab open late. If your experiments aren’t working, you can run them again… and again… and again.J-lab slammed me into disappointment and discovery. My lab partner and I blasted German punk music through endless hours in lab. We stayed up until 6am writing papers, hit submit, and then hit the good whiskey.I repeated the Michelson–Morley experiment that inspired Einstein to develop relativity. Then I measured the speed of cosmic-ray muons. To my infinite annoyance, I measured them going faster than the speed of light. Finally, I used shot noise to measure the charge on an electron. The charge on an electron is an abstract concept that is very important in physics. It’s the strength of an invisible force field coming from a particle that’s too small to see. My lab partner and I chased that abstract concept with simple electronics and a water bath - and we caught it, spot on.It was magic. It was science.(Shot noise setup, M.I.T. Junior Lab)I took many other classes from the Physics department, and they all taught me one thing very well: how to learn physical laws, and how to use those laws (plus a bit of mathematics) to unravel complex problemsJ-lab was different. J-lab taught me how to be a scientist.

Who will be the next director of MIT Media Lab?

Me.
