Oh, the irony of this question!Let me explain what I mean by that.When Hillary married Bill Clinton, she was a successful lawyer named Hillary Rodham. Whether it was a result of her feminist views, or the simple fact that she was professionally established as Hillary Rodham, she chose not to take her husband’s last name, and continued to be Hillary Rodham. Eventually, Bill Clinton was elected attorney general of Arkansas, and then Governor of Arkansas… and his wife was Hillary Rodham. She had never taken his last name. She was, by this time, a professor at the University of Arkansas law school, and was listed on the faculty as professor Hillary Rodham.But then, Bill Clinton lost his bid for re-election as governor of Arkansas. And in the aftermath of his defeat, Hillary was faced with a lot of polling information that said one contributing factor to his loss was that voters in Arkansas did not like that his wife did not take his last name.A couple of years later, Bill Clinton ran for the governor’s office again. This was 1982. And at that time, to remove one of the complaints voters had against them, Hillary Rodham changed her name to Hillary Rodham Clinton.For most of the next decade, this is how she was referred to publicly. Bill won back the governor’s office, and eventually decided to run for President in 1992. During the campaign, she was referred to as Hillary Rodham Clinton. But once she became First Lady, she largely dropped the “Rodham” because she faced criticism for the “untraditional” name choice which still included her maiden name.
