For a while, let me agree with you that Chartered Accountancy is overrated in India.But, do you know that even Bollywood celebrities, who I guess are highly underrated (sarcasm intended) in India, and after whom large number of people run to get an autograph, too need an autograph of a Chartered Accountant on their audit report?Why do people need CAs autograph?It is so because the government believes only Chartered Accountants are capable enough to certify the genuineness of finances declared by them. CAs are entitled a huge responsibility to certify that financial statements as declared by people are true and fair and are as per the financial reporting framework. CAs have to study and stay updated even after qualifying so that they can give the best piece of advice for their clients.Why does the government believes that CAs are capable of certifying the genuineness of financial statements?CAs are taught almost everything related to accounting, company laws, labour laws, FEMA laws, ye law, wo law, income tax, Excise Duty, Customs Duty, VAT, Service Tax, ye tax, wo tax, costing, financial management, auditing, Information Technology and what not as a part of their course! They become CAs only and only if they have in depth knowledge in not one, but all of these subjects.Why did CAs become CAs?They did not go to college to have fun like other people of their age. Despite just clearing after board exams, getting just free from school, they went ahead for more torture. Forget studies, they underwent rigorous articleship training for 3 years, for roughly 7 hours a day, where they also had to manage coaching classes that went on for 3-4 hours. Oh, and they could not sleep in those classes either. Despite all this, there is no guarantee that they will clear the exam. They still work 14 hours a day so as to become one of those trusted personalities who will someday be called as overrated. :)

Some students who go around saying that CA? Complete aish bawa. ICAI’s reply is on the way my buoy.What if i say that a 20 year old CA final student sits in a personal cabin at the client's place and the employees out there hesitate to have a word with him. Well that is the power that this profession gives us even before qualifying the entire course.The stipend they get during their mandatory training period is very less but still they are not afraid of investing the entire amount in the stock market because financial management at IPCC level and SFM at FINAL level just take that analyzing power to a whole new level.Flying in those Chartered planes to the client place is an achievement. Office by 11.30 then again class at 6.30 in the evening. Revision of both classes when we get our ass back home and the same schedule every morning for 1.5 years or so.Mugging up GST before it fucks us all.GRIND! GRIND! GRIND!

I am sure that most will answer this with life lessons. I won’t.The HR and training managers were away at a seminar when I started teaching a business writing (email focused) course at an international bank.Most participants were familiar to me from other courses. Everyone seemed happy to be in the class…Not only did they want help with email writing, but they also got two hours away from work.Except Pensri.She, a woman in her late 40s and in upper management, sat with arms crossed, leaning back in her chair, with a huge scowl on her face. She looked away from me, with lips pursed, when I smiled at her.The first thirty minutes were spent getting to know each other, talking about student needs and goals and then adjusting the course to better suit them.Pensri wanted the course expanded to include audit report writing which was too far away from the course scope. She took that news badly and argued. I suggested that she talk with the training manager about a future course, but she became more upset, especially when I moved on.After class, she accosted me, saying she thought the class would be worse than useless if I didn’t add what she wanted.I, again, calmly suggested that she voice her concerns to HR and Training since they had set the course perimeters.The last thing I saw as the lift doors closed was her, hands on hips, scowling at me.Before the next class, both managers, smiling, came to chat. They wanted to warn me that a participant would be joining my class on the second day.They had, in fact, set up this course specifically for HER because her emails were so badly written that complaints poured in. The other participants were allowed to join so she wouldn’t know that she was the target.Her name? Pensri. (You saw that coming, didn’t you… )She never attended another class.
