PDF Editor FAQ

Did you ever get an order from someone who had absolutely no authority over you? What was it and what did you do?

I am a teacher, and you wouldn’t think this would happen. I mean, if we stay in our lane, the job is pretty well defined. I was teaching Economics, which is required to graduate. Now, one thing that happens in March is many seniors get stricken with a grave illness that is highly communicable, that being the dreaded “Senioritis.” The seniors see they have 3 months of High School left, go on summer break a few months early and do no more work. Now, when a Senior gets the bug, I have a private conference with them. If that doesn’t help, I call their parents. If that doesn’t work, I call the parents in for a meeting with me and the student. If that doesn’t work I send the student to the Counselor. If that doesn’t work the student fails and they have to retake the class in Summer School before they can go to college. I have a policy. No Late work can be accepted after May 15. That’s about 3 weeks before the end of the semester. I needed the time to grade and record old work that was turned in. Also, late work was only worth 50% of the earned grade. If you earned 7 points, you got 4 (benefit of the doubt).I had this kid who had a really bad case in February. Just stopped working one day. I talked to him, his parents, called his parents in, had a conference with him and the Counselor, and all before May 1. We had finals June 4, 5, and 6. June 7 was a work day (last day with kids), and June 8 was the last day of school, Report cards had to be in on June 6. We had to verify grades on June 7, so they could finalize who would be graduating on June 8. I turn in my grades on June 6, and the counselor for this kid asks me to come to his office. Now, Counselors are paid as teachers. They have no authority over teachers (though they like to think they do). In fact, I am of the opinion that they are there to help the kids, which means they work for the teachers to help the kids pass. Anyhow, I go into the counselors office and he asks me to close the door. I do. He says, “Did Danny fail?”I said, “Yes.”He asked, “Well, what are you going to do about that?”I said, “Well, I gave him a fail, so I think I’ve done just about all I am going to do.”“Well, what could he do to graduate?” he asked“Nothing.” I said. “It’s far too late for that.”“That’s too bad, you need to take this work (he hands me a thick stack of work). Grade it, and put it in his grade.”I look at him and asked, “Upon whose authority are you telling me to do this?”He said, “Mine.”I said, “Oh, Okay.” I put the papers on his desk and start to open the door.He said, “Take the papers and do it.”I said, “You have no authority over me. His grade is given as it was earned. I gave him many chances to make up his work, and even if I took this, graded it, recorded it, when I recalculate his grade, it won’t make a difference. He is sitting at a firm 10%, He can only get 50% at best on these if they were turned in before the deadline. He’s failed.”He asked, “Did you tell his parents?”I said, “You need to do your job. I need to do mine. I’ve done mine, now please get out of my face or we will have words with your supervisor about your inability to do your job.”He said, “I’m doing my job.”I said, “No, you are trying to do the Assistant Principal’s job. Now, please leave me alone, and don’t forget, your job is to HELP me, not supervise me. You work for me, not the other way around.”He didn’t like that much, but I turned, opened the door and walked out. No teacher had ever told him that he worked for them. It was shocking to his sensibilities. Funny thing, even if the Principal came to me and asked me to do that, I wouldn’t have. He didn’t have the authority to make me do that. The teacher is the only person to establish the grade. As long as we can justify the grade, there is nothing anyone can do about it. Not even the Superintendent. With that kid sitting at 10%, it was easy to justify.Quick update. During distance learning and the Pandemic, I’ve opened up to allow them to turn in anything at any time until 1 month before the end of the school year for full credit. With all of the stress the kids are experiencing now, the last thing they need is an iron clad deadline that doesn’t meet up with the life they are living now. I regularly have students out for a week for “Mental Health Breaks.” I give them as much time as they need to catch up. Tests are out. The final exam (my only test) is about 5% of the grade in the class (It is more designed to see if they’ve picked up the “Economic Thinking Skills” than anything else). Until we are back in class and able to do interactive lessons within 6 feet of each other I will keep them on a more open class environment.

Do fake police exist in the USA?

Yes. They’re usually called “police impersonators” in the United States. They will typically set up their car with red and blue emergency lights, and sometimes a siren. They’ll make traffic stops on the people they choose as their victims, and mess with them for a while. They seldom ask for bribes or impromptu “fines.” Rarely, they will look for women traveling alone and try to extort them for sexual favors. For the most part, they just enjoy having their victims subject to their authority for a few minutes. These people are often failed cops who couldn’t pass the testing and screening required for real police officers. These people usually get caught when they unknowingly stop a real officer who is either off duty or working in plainclothes, or a real officer sees them executing a traffic stop and stops to investigate. Here is an example of one of those incidents:If you search YouTube for “police impersonator,” you’ll see lots of examples.

Do atheists truly maintain that the 6.5 billion people today, and the nearly 100 billion people throughout the history of our species are completely wrong in their belief in a deity?

No. This atheist maintains something very different.I maintain that the vast majority of people of faith understand the difference between mythology and reality. They understand that the story of King Midas teaches about greed. They don't think that there really was a king who turned things to gold by his touch.I maintain that people of faith understand the difference between metaphor and reality. They know that when the Psalmist wrote “The Lord is my shepherd,” the author didn't mean to say he is a sheep; it's imagery.I maintain that these stories and myths and doctrines are striving for deeper understanding. Some have withstood the tests of time, while others have been shown to lack merit. There's a whole lot that most people have been wrong about for most of human existence:The working of DNAGerm theory and other causes of diseaseThe causes of mental illnessThe center of the solar systemHow chemistry worksThe propriety of slaverySubjugation of womenYes, billions of people have been wrong about lots of things, or they've had incomplete understandings. Deities and religions are no different. This atheist doesn't maintain that all theists have been wrong about everything throughout history. This atheist simply doesn't believe that deities or other mythological entities are real.
