Orleans Street: Fill & Download for Free

New Orleans, for sure! Last summer, after my three month long internship in sunny Houston, Texas, I found myself desperately needing a break from all the work and planned out an elaborate trip to NOLA, as it’s called. It was a six-hour drive from Houston and we started driving in a rented Toyota Camry (brown people’s go-to) along Interstate 10E, listening to the Atlanta Monster podcast in Spotify. Soon we found ourselves driving past the Louisiana state line, and that’s when the scenery around us started to morph into more green and less of brown that is typical of Texas.NOLA was a whole different story though. With a Bohemian vibe to it, the colorful streets and palatial houses were just something else, altogether!Cafe du Monde -A French Quarter house -The haunted Jackson hotel where little children died in a tragic fire accident and visitors who stay in the hotel can still hear their cries for help. (NOLA is the mecca of haunted spots. We went on Ghost tours and they actually seemed creepy. A hundred year old bar, anyone?) -The palatial houses very atypical of US houses -A beautiful school near the oldest bar (Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop) -The streets -Beignets and Cafe au lait in Cafe du Monde -Ah! Shrimp Jambalaya and Black Beans Gumbo -And Chicken Po-boys. (Fun fact: These were initially eaten by people who went on strikes against the streetcar companies and since the bread is hard to chew on, it was referred to as a poor boy’s sandwich, thus they coined the term ‘po-boy’!).St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, where the voodoo queen Mary Laveau was buried -Speaking of the strange but fascinating Voodo culture and history of NOLA (Fun fact: The voodoo merch shop was owned by our very own Gujarati Indian businessman!) -The gorgeous Bayous swamp ride where we made friends with alligators -The famous WWII museum with its stunning collection! -And a final picture of moi posing not-so-candidly in the French Quarter -One with Roosevelt -And one in the infamous Bourbon Street, drinking the night away. Just kidding, half of my time was spent gawking at the wild atmosphere around me. But it was very empowering to see people from every part of the Land of Opportunities, USA, coming together and bonding over cocktails and dancing the night away. Sigh. I wish I could visit NOLA over and over, again.It is rightly said that if you haven’t been to New Orleans, you really haven’t lived. It is so culturally rich and is a brimming mix of so many cultures (French, African-American…). The folks were super friendly and I enjoyed listening to the Louisiana accent with the drawl. The Cajuns, natives who live by the Bayous and the way they spoke about their coasts being eroded every day affected me quite a bit.
